"NOTE to Microsoft: Who cares if yours is the

Don't want to start a flame war, but by your logic all of us should have stuck with the orginal frame by frame "Video for Windows" avi format back in the Win3.1 days (you know, the one where a ten second 160x160 video was about 30 megs in size?). When the MPEG group first came out with their compression format, nobody used it. Why? Because it just came out! Today, MPEG has been out for years, and WMV hasn't been out nearly as long, and this is why there's more support for MPEG on the web than for WMV. In addition, any Windows PC 98 and up with an Internet connection supports WMV or is a 30-second download away from supporting it, and this comes out to a lot more PCs than the "10%" you quote.

Not saying that MS isn't up to its old tactics with this format, but proprietary annoyances aside, it's a great format. If you prefer MPEG, use it; nobody's forcing you to use WMV, and Windows Media Player still supports both. If you're going to bash MS for something, bash them for something important, and I'll be happy to join you :-)
