: 78's are made of shellac. You can still buy record decks that will play 78's but it is important to get a dedicated cartridge. The steel record needles that were used on the old Dansette record players and which are still used on modern turntables to play vinyl recordings will damage the shellac.
: A specialist hi fi dealer should be able to get you a turntable that will play 78's for around £250 GBP - but of course this might not be a practical solution if you just want to transfer a small number of discs.
: There are a few websites dedicated to 78rpm recordings and collecting and they may be able to put you in touch with somebody who could do the transfers for you. Try www.shellac.org or typing '78rpm shellac' into a search engine.
: I hope this has been some help!
