Jay, you can download a very comprehensive freeware by the name of PROTOOLS made by DIGIDESIGN - do a search for PROTOOLS and you'll find it. I've recently been on a quest for knowlege on this same topic. Several people had said that this software was a "sort of industry standard" which is the catch phrase I was looking for. It"s a little difficult to configure, and it's complicated (in my opinion - someone who didn't go to school for four years studying MIDI interface) but it works and it's free. You can do a mad shitload of stuff with it, or you can just RIP audio to digital files. It comes with a 400 plus page PDF user guide as well so you can learn about stuff you really don't want to know about.
