Good points. But the biz has always been pretty cut-throat and driven by economics. Some would argue that the industry is rotten to the core. Personally I think that's too much of a generalisation...

In any case, the best thing you can do for yourself is to educate yourself. If you want success, then you're going to have to understand how things really work. There are a lot of great books out there that contain a load of useful info.

If you're like me, then you're good enough to get a gig in a small club pretty much whenever you want. But I don't really care if I make much $ or not. I do it for the fun.

I like to read about the biz from time to time, but it's more of an academic thing as opposed to anything I'd want to apply professionally. But, you've got to remember, if you want to play in the big league, then you have to play to someone else's rules.

: I'm by no means an expert in the music
: business world like David Hooper, but by years of listening to music and following all types of artist, I think I can make this small comment. I agree with David on this respect when in comes to bands. I think this article should point out that the major labels treat "groups/bands" this way. But when it comes to individual acts, especially in the pop and rap genre, all they want is to get an artist out there that has the look and personality, with a little dancing thrown in, who could generate units for them. Some of them do have talent, but most of them don't have a good foundation in place. And a lot of them have learned from other peoples mistakes (will established acts i.e Missy Elliot, Timbuland, etc. as their mentors won't let them get the short end of the stick). So for those of you who have a dream of being a pop star, go for it, but make sure you don't get the short end of the stick!!!!
