I've had the same trouble before and it seems to be a memory issue. If you're recording in session, try "locking" any real-time effects you're using and that should free up some RAM from mixing as you go. Also, try turning up your background mixing to about 3 seconds - not much more than that. It should be in Options>settings>system

Other than that, defrag your hard drive and add some RAM...
