Freeware! Everybody loves reading and hearing the word, especially musicians. Let's be honest, not everyone can afford to set themselves up with a cutting-edge virtual recording studio. Nor do people always take the option of stealing software by grabbing the latest crack.
Nope, some of us are skint and moral. We also know how much quality freeware is available these days and eagerly hunt it down. Did you know there are free MP3 encoders, free audio players, MIDI sequencers, hard disc recording packages, CD copying software, audio effects, format converters, sound generators and synthesizers - all available right now on Shareware Music Machine! With a little bit of experimentation and planning you can end up with a virtual studio at very little cost. At the very least, you're sure to find some software to augment your existing set up.
The selection of software you'll find below represents just a portion of the freeware available. But by checking out your responses on the messageboards as well as the software charts, we've come up with a selection for you to check out. Don't feel shy about making any suggestions about our choices concerning what you 32-bit Windows users can get into.
Fast As Possible Audio Effects

As Fast As Possible Audio DSP lets you add some FX to your input (eg MIC, LINE IN, MIDI, CD all the devices you have on your soundcard) in realtime. The FX are pitch, distortion, flanger and Reverb. It lets you add them in your defined order.
Expander can stretch a WAV file in time without changing its pitch. It uses the Fast Fourier Transform to analyze, modify and synthetize the signal. More scientifically you may call it a short-time Fourier transform analyzer-synthetizer or a phase vocoder. Currently the stretching factor must be an integer, so moderate stretching or compression cannot be done with the program.
Guitar Effects with stereo reverb, chorus, flanger, distortion, pitch-shifter, compressor, wah-wah, sweep filters,low and hi pass filters with tone control.
Trashcoder VST Plugin. The effect is a vocoder that comes with filter bank shaper, morphing control and cutting modulators
Audio Recording

Anvil Studio is for recording, composing, editing, and the mixing of music using MIDI, digital audio, and sampled percussions. The standard version lets you record an unlimited number of MIDI tracks and one Audio track.
Fat Rock Studio 0.2 is still in the early stages of development but could one day be a must-have. Still, it's well worth a look. As a multitrack, digital audio recorder (harddisk recording-studio), it has 16 stereo/mono channels and is designed to work just like a real recorder. It implements a plugin-architecture for realtime audio processing effects. The best comparision is probably with an A-DAT recorder.
