Don't believe me? How many are you subscribed to? Well, I can think of at least one! For bands with large online followings, it often makes sense to have an official announcement list and a discussion list. But, for now, let's start at a grassroots level. When used properly, a mailing list acts as a news service, publicity vehicle, online community, market research device and historical archive. Besides the obvious function of letting people know when your band is going to play next or announcing a new release, you can also interact with the people who take an interest in your music and make them feel a part of what you're doing. This can take the form of innocuous chat or directly getting feedback on what you're doing. While you may want to simply pursue your creative outlets for your own enjoyment, you may also want to get some idea as to how you sound. Believe ot or not, for every music journalist earning a dollar there are many more writing for zines or running high-quality web sites out of the goodness of their own hearts. Some of these reviewers are of an impressive standard and can really help you notice things that matter if you're serious about what you do. In a sense, this all means more than having a simple one-way communication with your mailing list members. Let's look at it this way. Would you rather debate the merits of The Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up' with techno fiends from around the world on your list or simply send them an email every so often letting them know about your band. There's more likelihood of avoiding the infamous trashcan if you let people post to your list. People love to follow read their own emails and follow debate far more than getting what may be regarded as spam from some list they joined several months ago. Your priority should be to get people to remember your band and download any music you have online. You may never go on tour in Finland, but give your Finnish list members every reason to have a listen to your music. That's what it's all about. Free mailing list resources
You've got a list. So now what? It's a good idea to submit your mailing list to a number of directories. Quite often, people just join lists out of curiousity so it's not a waste of time to publicize yourself. Work out how you want to describe your list and get it down to approximately twenty five words. Then try these directories, as well as announcement services.
