Digital music taking off

Date posted: August 17 1999
Press Release

Media Metrix reports that there were an estimated four million users of digital music, including MP3 formatted files, in US households in the month of June 1999. This is up from just a few hundred thousand less than a year ago. The leading digital music players in June 1999 were RealNetworks RealJukebox at 2.2 million users and NullSoft Winamp at 1.8 million users. Media Metrix estimates there were approximately 50,000 users of other brands of digital music players in the month of June 1999.

"The growth in usage of digital music players has been phenomenal over the last year," said Bruce Ryon, Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Analyst of Media Metrix. "Less than a year ago, there were a number of shareware products with a few thousand users each and only one major player in the market, Winamp, with 300 hundred thousand users. Today, Winamp has grown to almost two million users. RealNetworks, leveraging its brand in streaming media, has grown to over 2.2 million users in just a matter of two months since its early May launch of RealJukebox. This makes RealJukebox the most successful launch of any new unbundled product we have seen in the three and a half years we have been tracking software usage," Ryon added.

The Media Metrix SoftUsage Report reflects the electronically measured software usage of PCs in a continuous panel of 10,000 demographically balanced U.S. consumer households. This is a sub-sample of Media Metrix' larger panel of 50,000 individuals under measurement used to produce the continuous Media Metrix Audience Ratings.

More in-depth data on digital music usage, user demographics and hardware profiles can be purchased in subscription form from your Media Metrix account executive, or from on a one time basis from ZD InfoBeads at http://www.infobeads.com/default.asp?sid=digitalmusic.
