Software Description

Powerhouse all-in-one multimedia software offering conversion, ripping, editing, recording, burning, playback (including full playlist and full screen video support), and much more. Powerful, yet easy to use audio, video (VCD), and data CD/DVD burning are all fully supported. Other advanced features include video capture, video creation/combining/extraction, video editing, batch video processing, media management, audio merge, MusicID audio recognition, lyrics search, audio tag editing, CDDB/CDDB2/FreeDB support, and more. The audio content of video files can be extracted and saved to sound files, and frames can also be extracted to images files in batch mode. Video files can also be created from still frame images and/or other videos.

Supported conversions include: CD to WAV, MP3, WMA, and OGG; MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV/AIF/VOX/MP2/MPC/G.72x/AU/RAW to MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV; WAV/MP3/WMA/OGG to CD burning, WAV/MP3 Compression, and two-way conversions among MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVI, WMV, Multi-Page TIFF, and FLIC. MPEG options are available for VCD, SVCD, and DVD compliant output. When converting from audio CD, track information can be dynamically downloaded from the CDDB and used to automatically name saved files.

Video editing is available for AVI (uncompressed), AVI (compressed using any available codec), MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV, and ASF. Comprehensive video editing operations are provided (delete frame, delete selection, crop, resize, rotate, mirror, flip, trim, text overlay, adjust audio volume, etc.). In addition, an extensive list of over 30 effects and color adjustment operations allow for powerful video enhancement and alternation. WAV, WMA, and MP3 audio files can be inserted into the video or extracted from the video; and BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PNG, RAS, PPM, TGA, and TIF are the supported image formats that can be inserted or extracted. Most video processing operations can also be performed in batch mode on a list of video files using the software's Batch Video Processor

THX! Taht´s the professional way to do it! ;-)

: Use Windows Media Encoder 7.1
: go to options, manage profiles
: choose profile and then edit
: make sure uncompressed is checked
: load your file with new seesion choose convert file
: start process file will be saved, verry large file
: load resulting file into Virtualdub 1.3c
: save as avi and its done

: Noddy

My description, slightly different:

- Install MS Media Encoder 7.1
- Make Profile: "Uncompressed" (best audio quality)
- Convert *.WMV (v. 7.x) -> "Uncompressed" (Using the assistant; save as *.WMV = ASF)

- Put BIG file into TMPGEnc beta 12a
- Convert to MPEG1, (*.MPG)

Done!

Re: WMV to avi or mov??

Great post, I didn't have the DIVX coder so I installed this one I found some where:

DivX ;-) MPEG4 Hi-Res Video Codec
3.11alpha release - http://divx.ctw.cc

Re: WMV to avi or mov??

Reading on I find someone beat me to the chase and already posted this solution. Sorry dude...

: I've got it I've actually got it!!

: The wav to convert wmv (or any other format to anything you want. If you've got the codec installed that is).

: The answer is GraphEdit..
: A great proggy you can download at http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding_conv.html

: Here's how to do it... (example for Divx avi)

: Open the program (duh)
: Click file, Render media file.
: By default the program will layout the codecs you need to decode.
: Remove the Video render and the Direct sound device from the graph.
: Goto Graph, insert filters from the menu.
: From DirectShow filters insert AviMux and FileWriter (enter the export filname when prompted)
: Also add Divx coder from Video compressors.
: Connect audio stream from Windows media audio to avimux.
: Connect video from Windows media video to divx codec.
: Divx codec to avimux
: and avimux to filewriter.
: Hit playbutton and wait.
: DONE.

: This will result in Divx compressed video with uncompressed sound. (add compressors to your hearts desire.)

Re: WMV to avi or mov??

: : Anyone know how to convert WMV video files to .avi or .mov formats? Thanks. I am trying to put a video on a website, but most people cannot view WMV, they can hear the sound, but not see the video. Thanks

: Good Luck. I'd like to convert from wmv to mpg

: NEVER a good sign.

: MPG, MPEG which wmv is supposed to be the competitor of has better support on the web.

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? microsoft have the answer

: What is "Graph Editor"? It's actually GraphEdit and it comes with the Microsoft DirectX 8 SDK, which you get with MSDN or download from Microsoft's web site.

: It lets you see and alter the path of software (codecs and drivers) used to read and play or write a multimedia file.

: When I get GraphEdit, what do I do?

: 1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.
: 2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

: We'll do AVI, because that's what you'll want if you're using AVI editors to edit the movie.

: 1) Use the File->RenderFile option and choose your ASF file (can use WMV, etc)
: 2) The default graph is built for you
: 3) Delete any filters after (but not including) the Windows Media Audio Decoder filter
: 4) Delete any filters after (but not including) the ASF ICM Handler filter
: 4) Insert a new filter (Graph->InsertFilters) called "AVI Mux" from the DirectShow filters section
: 5) Link the ASF ACM Out to XForm In of Windows Media Audio Decoder
: 6) Link XForm Out of Windows Media Audio Decoder to Input 1 of AVI Mux
: 7) Link ASF ICM Out to Input 2 of AVI Mux.
: 8) Insert a new filter called "File writer" from DirectShow section and choose a file name
: 9) Link the AVI Out of AVI Mux to the In of your file writer
: 10) Right-click the AVI Mux filter and choose Properties
: 11) Choose the Full option of the Interleaving section and click OK (this makes the sound and video match up and is the whole point of the AVI format)
: 10) Press the play button
: 11) Wait until the play button is active again - this means the thing is finished (you can right-click on AVI Mux and look at the Current Position and Duration count to see how far in seconds the conversion has progressed during the conversion)
: 12) Have fun editing your AVI

: NEVER a good sign.

not passing by avi or mov
that way you'll go editing straight to
corel lumiere
or
adobe premiere
i have no idea how to do it
any bright ideas

MPEG writer filter

In DirectX one sample module named AmCap for video capturing. but it does not support mpeg files. it required third party filter for mpeg. what is this? how can i write code for mpeg writer filter?

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? microsoft have the answer

you mention asf icm and acm. i'm doing wmv to avi.
What are the filters for that. i'm confused by your example.

Thank you very very Much for the solution I have been looking for. It is Much appreciated. One wonders what microsoft is thinking when they produce a programme very few find useful. I can now "use" the files I created . Regards

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? microsoft have the answer

I followed all the steps an I still couldn't open the file in virtual dub. If I play the file in the media player, I don't get any video. When I open it in vrtual dub it tells me:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for file format WMV2.(unknown). Virtual Dub requires a Video for Windows(VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Direct Show codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Can someone help with this Issue.
Thank You.

: : What is "Graph Editor"? It's actually GraphEdit and it comes with the Microsoft DirectX 8 SDK, which you get with MSDN or download from Microsoft's web site.

GraphEdit is also available as a separate 400kb zip file I found on the web, this will run on more than just w2k as well, and seems a self-contained, standalone program that will work with any installed codec.

: : 1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.
: : 2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? microsoft have the answer

How would you convert a .wmv to .mov format?
Please Email Me
-Thanks

Using Graph Edit from Direct 8

Excellent guidelines; I was able to follow. The resulting avi looks good on size but when playing in media player all I get is skin showing while the music plays. I've seen this happen occasionally in the past but cannot explain it. Perhaps because of using wm8 in creating the wmv file I'm trying to convert to avi. Just started burning DVD's and DVDit doesn't take wmv files.

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? microsoft have the answer

I might have figured out a way to convert wmv movies to avi files. I opened Vegas Video 3 and imported a wmv movie, put it on the timeline, and then created a new track as an avi. It takes a while, but it made the avi. Now all I have to do is convert the avi to mpeg to play it on dvd. I'm not sure about this cause I'm still learning, but email me if you have questions.

i recorded in wmv format from a dv-cam and want to edit in premiere
i get an avi file but it's green with some small parts of what used to be the image
what can we try next?

You might also want to encode using a different AVI codec, in which case:

1) DON'T delete the 'Windows Media Video Decoder' block

2) Run its output into a 'Video Compressor' of your choice (don't forget to configure), and

3) Run the output from step 2 to an input of your 'AVI Mux' block.

GraphEdit is *the* way to do it, IMHO.

THE EASIEST WAY TO CONVERT FROM WMV TO AVI

OK EVERYONE HERE'S THE SIMPLEST WAY TO CONVERT WMV TO AVI. AS I MENTIONED IN A PREIVIOUS POST THE EASIEST WAY TO DO THIS IS USING TMPG AND VIRTUAL DUB. UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO FUCKING MICROSOFT, THE WMV CODEC HAS A LOCK IN IT SO THAT IT CAN NO LONGER OPEN UP UNDER VIRTUAL DUB OR MOST OTHER VIDEO EDITING/PLAYING APPLICATIONS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYERTOOLS/PLAYER AND A FEW OTHERS. TMPG IS ONE SUCH APPLICATION THAT WILL OPEN AND CONVERT WMV FILES, HOWEVER IT HAS TROUBLE READING WMA(WINDOW'S MEDIA AUDIO) FILES AND GENERALLY WHEN CONVERTED THEY END UP AS CHOPPY SOUNDING OR MESSED UP MPA(MEDIA PLAYER AUDIO) FILES. SO WHAT CAN WE DO TO CONVERT WMA TO A WAV FILE SO THAT WE CAN DUB IT TO THE VIDEO WE CREATE UNDER TMPG? WELL THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO DO THIS ONE IS USING GRAPHEDIT WHICH IS A SOMEWHAT COMPLICATED CODEC CONVERSION PROGRAM, HOWEVER, THE EASY WAY TO CONVERT WMA OR WMV TO A WAV FILE IS BY DOWNLOADING A NEAT LITTLE PROGRAM ENTITLED "WMA2WAV". I'M NOT SURE WHAT WEB SITE TO GET THIS FROM, HOWEVER YOU ALL CAN JUST GO TO ANY SEARCH ENGINE AND TYPE THIS IN "WMA2WAV" AND I'M SURE THE SITE THAT HAS THIS APPLICATION WILL COME UP. SINCE WMV FILES CONSIST OF WMA, YOU CAN USE EITHER A WMV OR A WMA FILE FOR THE CONVERSION.

WHEN YOU FIND AND DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM, MAKE SURE THAT YOU DOWNLOAD THE "GUI" THAT GOES WITH IT. THIS IS A LOT EASIER FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE DOS COMMANDS VERY WELL. (IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE DOS THEN JUST FOLLOW THE STEPS IN THE README FILE THAT COMES ALONG WITH THE PROGRAM, OTHERWISE CONTINUE READING MY INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE THE GUI(GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE)

(BEFORE YOU START CONVERTING MAKE A COPY OF THE ORIGINAL WMV FILE YOU WANT TO CONVERT)

AFTER YOU FIND AND DOWNLOAD THIS PROGRAM, RUN THE EXECTUABLE. A DIALOGUE BOX WILL APPEAR ASKING YOU TO BROWSE TO THE FILE WMV/WMA FILE YOU WANT TO CONVERT. SELECT THE FILE IT IS YOU WANT TO CONVERT AND THE DIRECTORY YOU WANT TO SAVE IT TO AND THEN CLICK OKAY ON THE GUI DIALOGUE BOX.

THE CONVERSION TIME DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF THE FILE BUT GENERALLY IT WILL CONVERT WMV FILES TO WAV FILES PRETTY QUICKLY. (I CONVERTED A 200 MEG WMV FILE TO A 40 MEG WAV IN ABOUT 5 MINUTES) THERE IS NO STATUS BAR THAT APPEARS WHEN RUNNING THE APPLICATION SO YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR A "DONE" DIALOGUE BOX TO POP UP TO TELL WHEN THE APPLICATION IS DONE CONVERTING. ANYWAY, AFTER YOU CONVERT THE WMV TO WAV. BROWSE TO AND OPEN THE COPIED WMV FILE ON THE VIDEO TAB IN TMPG.

NOTE*(FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR ON HOW TO USE TMPG GO TO VCDHELPER.COM FOR HELP ON HOW TO USE THIS APPLICATION)

NEXT BROWSE TO AND OPEN UP THE NEWLY CONVERTED WAV FILE IN TMPG UNDER THE AUDIO TAB.(YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TEST THE CONVERTED WAV AUDIO IN A MEDIA PLAYER BEFORE DOING THIS, PERSONALLY, I HAVE HAD A 100% SUCCESS RATE IN WMV/WMA TO WAV CONVERSION WHEN USING WMA2WAV APPLICATION)

FINALLY ADJUST TO THE MPEG SETTINGS YOU WANT AND JUST HIT TMPG'S START BUTTON LIKE YOU NORMALLY WOULD TO CONVERT ANY OTHER MEDIA FILE TO MPG AND THAT'S IT.

AFTER YOUR DONE CONVERTING TO MPG JUST USE VIRTUAL DUB TO CONVERT THE MPG TO AVI.(FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE VIRTUAL DUB JUST GO TO VCDHELPER.COM FOR AN EXPLANATION)

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A PROBLEM OPENING UP THE FILE UNDER VIRTUAL DUB ANY MORE SINCE THE FILE IS NOW USING AN MPG VIDEO CODEC AND A MPA AUDIO CODEC. FIND THE AVI CODEC YOU WANT TO USE IN VIRTUAL DUB AND COMPRESS AWAY.

NOTE* THERE IS ONE OTHER WAY TO DO THIS BUT IT IS A REAL PAIN IN THE ASS. IF YOU KNOW DOS YOU CAN USE A PROGRAM CALLED DIGTV THAT HAS ABOUT A 75% SUCCESS RATE, HOWEVER YOU GENERALLY COME OUT WITH REALLY CRAPPY LOOKING AVI'S. TO DOWNLOAD THAT PROGRAM GO TO www.digtv.ws. YOU CAN EMAIL THE CREATOR OF THIS PROGRAM IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

NOTE* IF YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE OPENING THE WMV VIDEO FILES UNDER TMPG CHANGE THE EXTENSION TO ASF. IF YOU STILL HAVE TROUBLE OPENING THE FILE UNDER TMPG THEN DOWNLOAD "ASFTOOLS" WHICH IS A GREAT ASF FIXER PROGRAM. LINKS TO DOWNLOAD THIS APPLICATION CAN BE FOUND AT VCDHELPER.COM.

: AFTER YOU FIND AND DOWNLOAD THIS PROGRAM, RUN THE EXECTUABLE.

: THE CONVERSION TIME DEPENDS ON THE SIZE OF THE FILE BUT GENERALLY IT WILL CONVERT WMV FILES TO WAV FILES PRETTY QUICKLY.

: NOTE*(FOR THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR ON HOW TO USE TMPG GO TO VCDHELPER.COM FOR HELP ON HOW TO USE THIS APPLICATION)

: NEXT BROWSE TO AND OPEN UP THE NEWLY CONVERTED WAV FILE IN TMPG UNDER THE AUDIO TAB.(YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TEST THE CONVERTED WAV AUDIO IN A MEDIA PLAYER BEFORE DOING THIS, PERSONALLY, I HAVE HAD A 100% SUCCESS RATE IN WMV/WMA TO WAV CONVERSION WHEN USING WMA2WAV APPLICATION)

: FINALLY ADJUST TO THE MPEG SETTINGS YOU WANT AND JUST HIT TMPG'S START BUTTON LIKE YOU NORMALLY WOULD TO CONVERT ANY OTHER MEDIA FILE TO MPG AND THAT'S IT.

: AFTER YOUR DONE CONVERTING TO MPG JUST USE VIRTUAL DUB TO CONVERT THE MPG TO AVI.(FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE VIRTUAL DUB JUST GO TO VCDHELPER.COM FOR AN EXPLANATION)

: YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A PROBLEM OPENING UP THE FILE UNDER VIRTUAL DUB ANY MORE SINCE THE FILE IS NOW USING AN MPG VIDEO CODEC AND A MPA AUDIO CODEC. FIND THE AVI CODEC YOU WANT TO USE IN VIRTUAL DUB AND COMPRESS AWAY.

: NOTE* THERE IS ONE OTHER WAY TO DO THIS BUT IT IS A REAL PAIN IN THE ASS.

: NOTE* IF YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE OPENING THE WMV VIDEO FILES UNDER TMPG CHANGE THE EXTENSION TO ASF. IF YOU STILL HAVE TROUBLE OPENING THE FILE UNDER TMPG THEN DOWNLOAD "ASFTOOLS" WHICH IS A GREAT ASF FIXER PROGRAM. LINKS TO DOWNLOAD THIS APPLICATION CAN BE FOUND AT VCDHELPER.COM.
: YOU CAN USE
