DR5Tool is no longer available - we have left the comments below so any remaining users can discuss it.

DR5Tool is a Macintosh program that allows you to load standard MIDI files into the Boss DR-5 Dr. Rhythm Section from Roland. As a side effect, it also allows you to back up the contents of the pattern and song memory.

DR5 as a controller

Is there any way to use my Boss DR-5 as a controller on my PC for any music software such as Ableton Live, Reason or whatever software else? I have the MIDI-USB cable but somehow my PC does not detect the DR5 as a hardware. Are there any driver to work this up?

DR5 Tool

The DR5 Tool user text(hardware requirements) specifies a MIDI interface hooked up to the modem port. My Midiman 2x2 patches into a USB port. Is this why I cannot dump my DR5 memory into the computer?

dr 880

lve just bought a dr 880, has anyone any ideas on how too increase the memory,it is 30,000 notes as supplied, but it would be wonderful if this could be made bigger, perhaps up to 10 times bigger, l am in no way technically minded, or computer literate but surely theres some kind of extra storage device which can be plugged into the usb port.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks

DR-5 Guitar Input

The ability to use the guitar to input sounds into my DR-5 doesn't seem to work very well. Even with my guitar volume all the way up, I get intermittent operation of this ability. I'm speaking of Boss' advertisement that you can "..play a flute solo using the guitar.." by using the guitar input on the DR-5. Can anyone tell me if there is a fix for this?

exporting DR-5 songs into MIDI/audio program

is there anyway to take songs from the DR-5 and put them into something else?

Boss DR5

I have had a DR5 for a couple of years & got it for mostly drum patterns for small gigs & recording.
I was told that there were several other patterns available on the Webb.
I understand that you can program your own, but I've been in a time crunch & am not a drummer.

I am looking for Jass & Blues patterens that are not part of the onboard patterns.

Also some good 3/4 , 6/8 time patterens. The DR5 on board patterns are not strong in that area even though you can force a 3/4 over a four mesure 4/4 it never quite gets it.

Please help
Thanks

Where are my songs?

I used the DR 5 to create several songs over the years. Never had any trouble playing them. All of a sudden, they are gone. The light is flashing when I play them, however, there is no music. The patterns are still in order in the song. NO MUSIC THOUGH! Has the memory died? I had just worked out a deal to cut a CD using some of this background music. The preset patterns and demo songs will play but all my orginal material is no where to be found. The patterns and songs contain no sound. Can anyone help me? Or, am I to be the hearer of bad news? Thanks for any help or information. I am scared that I know what the answer is going to be but nevertheless, help is appreciated. Rock

Problem in XP-50 Roland

I will be very thankfull if someone advice me. I have Roland xp-50 and is with me since 96. about four months ago the display started fading and finally everything vanished from the display. The keyboard functions ok with midi but without anyting on its display panel(i use cakewalk )but its not functioning as stand-alone unit. It turns on but with blank display.

service support

please check that in keyboard sound is ok if yes then this is a minor problem check the track of display and voltage also

I have the same problem, got

I have the same problem, got that problem after using sytem exclusve with cake walk, did not get it imediately after using cake walk but after sometimes. Therefore display blank but sound ok on keyboard. I think it's the xp50 which has been deprogrammed. Apprecite you help, how you goet your xp50 fixed.

XP50

Did you fix your xp50? and how. I have the same problem and maybe you can advise me of what you did.
My lcd just faded today. it was a hot day.

Thanks

Noren

I brought mine in Alabama,

I brought mine in Alabama, 1996 but the lcd faded in 2003, sound ok, midi works, but with an orange lit blank display, there not much you can do. Something unusual happened early this year, I was using the keyboard (midi only) with FLStudio and the characters on the display appeared for a while, then went blank again. This thing happened a few times. This is why I think this problem is related to the xp50 being deprogrammed. I remember I STARTED GETTING THAT PROBLEM AFTER USING SYSTEM EXCLUSIVE WITH CAKEWALK. ANYWAY WILL APPREICATE ANY HELP , ON HOW TO GET THAT FIXED. I MISS THE XP50, SUCH A GREAT KEYBOARD.

XP50 lcd problem

Yes, my LCD came back today- I had connected it to the Lexicon Jamman to act as a midiclock for the jamman.
But now the LCD is working.

What is going on? Maybe some loose connection or did it get too hot?
I will disconnect my midi cable and try it for some time .

How do I save my performance settings- just in case I have to reset the whole keyboard- and I can load those settings back into my keys afterward.

thanks for your help.

Re: Problem in XP-50 Roland

(Originally posted 00:12:12 2/04/06)

I got some good news...
I have an XP-50 that someone shoved a floppy disk into sideways and damaged the heads in the disk drive.

I refused to pay Roland 100.00 for a new one, so I too a chance and bought a VERY similar floppy drive...

Teac drive FD-235HF 7291
P/N 19307772-91 (new drive)

. Mechanically it is identical to the original drive...

Teac drive FD-235HF 7527
P/N 19307775-27 (original Roland drive)

I swapped all of the electronic parts (including motors) into the new shell which had the good heads.

Guess what??? It worked!!! YES!!!

later I replaced the orange led light with a superbright blue led for looks. So now it looks great and works great.

Oh yeah I also swapped the black cover and black eject button.

Good luck to all!

Problem in XP-50 Roland: Replacing the Disk Drive

I'm in a dilema here. I need to get a replacement 3.5 Floppy Drive for my XP-50. Roland wants $85 dollars plus shipping and handling, intoen they want $100 for the part, plus $65/hr labor plus a 3 week wait. TEAC the manufacturer of the Disk Drive says the FD235HF-6527 is not available anymore but the FD235HF-A529 should be equivalent to the 6527. Do you know anyone who has had there XP-50 repaired in the area of the 3.5 disk drive? If so, do you know what model drive they used. Please help. I'm in the middle of 2 music projects which require sequenced to be saved then transported to MIDI files and/or recorded to Cakewalk sequencing program. Any advice besides going back to Roland would help. Thanks in advance.

Problem in XP-50 Roland: Replacing the Disk Drive

Well, I can tell you that the A529
does NOT work in the XP-50. Roland
customizes the floppy so that you
can only get a replacement from them,
and must pay a small fortune for it.
Corporate bastards.

I also have a faulty Panasonic JU-257A726P. What is so special about these drives that makes them incompatable with any other standard floppy?

Re: Problem in XP-50 Roland: Replacing the Disk Drive

Hi, I just went through the same issue with an xp-80, and I feel you might have had the same issue as I did. The issue comes from the fact that standard PC drives use the IBM interface, whereas I believe the Roland uses the older SHUGART interface. To get a standard Mitsumi PC floppy drive to work, I had to
cut the floppy cable for pin 12, and send the cable from pin 12 drive side right to ground. This makes the motor active at all times when a disk is in there, but it works fine. I think, actually, that the motor is active all the time on these units with the standard drive in it. Is that right?? Thanks. Hope this helps.

Re: Problem in XP-50 Roland: Replacing the Disk Drive

Hallo!!!

just found a solution after a chk on another forum written by a brazilian user...it worked it out. the problem is in the pin's nbr. are not the same nbr and this is the question. The model suggested and chkd by us is a NEC model I'll write nextly. than it must to revert the flat cable and the game is done! ;-)

Re: Problem in XP-50 Roland: Replacing the Disk Drive

Hi,

Thanks for your posting. I am going to replace the floppy drive of my Roland XP-80 with the one you recommended (NEC), too. However, I am not quite clear what you mean by “reverting” the pin cable. Does it mean you take the end that was attached to the old drive and just turn it over or does it mean you unplug the other end that was attached to the XP interior and attach it to the new drive? Let me know.

Matt
