Re: WHERE'S GVOX can't contact them

I am having the same problem with GVOX. It doesn't make sense that a company that bought the rights to Encore, developed a 32-bit version of the product, sold me the upgrade, and markets a bunch of other well-written products, just all of a sudden just isn't there. I am trying to find out how to reinstall Encore 4.5/Windows as a result of having to rebuild the machine it was on.

Re: WHERE'S GVOX can't contact them

: They are, I have been told, out of business.

That would not seem to make sense. Their phone number rings ('though no one answers), their website is still there ('though it is of very little help), and my emails to them son't bounce back ('though I haven't received any response). It would all seem to indicate that they are still there, but are functioning incredibly slowly.

Or maybe I'm just holding out false hope.

Re: WHERE'S GVOX can't contact them

I can add more to the mystery. i have had replies to email from them as recent as 9/3/02 assuring me that all is back on track, but nothign since. Just before this, they sent me a password free verison of the Encore which works fine.
But there's more:
Today, I did a bit of 'sleuthing', and got onto a business that was in the same building in Philadelphia.
Said that 'Gvox had had a big sale in December and left the building then' Strange as I had email from Debbie at GVOX in February claiming that the business was 'back on track.'

The website at gvox.com has been edited a couple of times in the last month or so too.
Perhaps they have a new address?
The website mentions a new FAX number but no-one is answering there. Perhaps it is the 'phantom Debbie' ?

Tracking this company down has become a sort of hobby for me now!

Re: WHERE'S GVOX can't contact them

The gvox web site was still up and running on April 30, 2002. I ordered an Encore upgrade from them on that date, but I have received no response to my order. Now the website is gone and e-mail is returned. If anyone locates the company please let me know.

Re: WHERE'S GVOX can't contact them

A couple ideas concerning the Gvox problem. (1) Were the Passport products such as Encore and Master Tracks ever available through retail outlets? (2) If Gvox is indeed gone and they have taken Encore with them, is it possible to find someone that has CD copies of these upgrades and get copies?? (Yes, I know it is not legal.)

I would assume that the original Passport software is now in the public domain. The problem is that the source code was sold by Passport to GVOX and that's what is really needed in order to improve the product.
The demo version of MasterTracks by GVOX crashed on XP and the copyprotection scheme they used was horribible, in Tiggerspeak.
I would hope that GVOX decides to simply give the code away, but my guess is that it will be considered an asset, if and when they go out of business, if they have not already done so.
If they are gone, they certainly have left behind a bunch of upset unsatisfied customers.
And they seemed to have closed up shop without even an apology or explanation.
I am glad I chose not to upgrade my software with them. I was about to buy the MasterTracks upgrade when they stopped answering my emails and their phone was not answered.
This is a classic example of how not to run a business.

Re: WHERE'S GVOX can't contact them

You hit the nail on the head with that one. They had their software developers work for a couple years on on-line ordering as a top priority instead of doing what they know (music software) and farming out the on-line ordering. They treated existing customers like dirt. Now, they just disappear without a howdy-do. Bet I can guess how they treated their employees too. Wonder how many ended up not getting paid? Classic is definitely the good word.

Re: Encore and Windows XP

I had the same problem and have asked a friend of mine, who's an W2000-expert, if she had an answer. She's sent me the following:

Application Notes

The following sections provide general information about running
applications on Windows NT version 4.0 that were created for MS-DOS, Windows
version 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT version 3.x. Windows NT version 4.0
and W2k has excellent support for those applications. If you do encounter a
problem, this section provides some solutions. In addition, this section
lists specific applications that have known problems with Windows NT version
4.0 and W2k. The companies have been notified of these problems.
Error Dialogs Naming "ReinitializeCriticalSection"
Some applications attempt to replace the URL.DLL file that ships with
Windows NT. If the applications are successful, the replacement .DLL file
may be an older version specific to the Windows 95 operating system. When
any application attempts to initialize the replacement URL.DLL, the
following error dialog will appear:

"The procedure entry point ReinitializeCriticalSection could not be located
in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

This does not necessarily represent an error in the application you are
launching when the dialog appears. Another unrelated application has most
likely replaced the URL.DLL file. In most cases, you can click OK in the
dialog box and your application will continue as expected.
To reinstall the correct URL.DLL file

(NOTE : To prevent a file inconsistancy between the SP1 version and the
Internet Explorer versions of the Url.dll file, remember to replace the
Url.dll file with the Internet Explorer version. )

In the %systemroot%\system32 folder, rename URL.DLL to URL.OLD.
Copy URL.DLL from the \i386 folder on the Windows NT compact disc to
%systemroot%\system32 (substitute your platform folder for "i386" on RISC
machines).
Reboot to initialize the copied URL.DLL.

Yeah, I found this information on the microsoft site too, after clicking the link on gvox.com. I think it's just for Windows NT though, isn't it? Isn't that what i386 refers to? We need something for WindowsXP.

I had the same problem for one of my son's educational games and found out that you should go to Start/Programs and RIGHT click on the name of the item that's affected. Choose "Properties" and set the capatability to "Windows 95". That resolved that problem for the game. Now I have another I'm researching. Hope this works for you guys!
