Everest 1.40 Available

Hello Everyone,

I'm am getting ready to post version 1.50, which will go into world
wide distribution through various distributors. In the meantime, I've
posted version 1.40 on my web site, and hopefully some of you will try
it out and give me some feedback very soon by July 10. Any feedback is
gratefully appreciated, and you might get your request in a future
release (but please, no new requests for version 1.50!) Version 1.50
will be available after July 15.

Here is the README. Note that several things are not working yet, i.e.
you can export a .syx file but you can't import it. I haven't tested
importing .apex banks with embedded samples. Etc.etc.etc. The help file
is a little musty. Stereo stuff should be working, though.

-cheers,
Mark

Everest Home Page:

Direct download of version 1.40:
http://home.att.net/~lakata/Evrst140.zip

Version 1.40 July 7, 1998:
* new feature: Microtuning Wizard
* new feature: Duplicate Keymap (similar to duplicate layer)
* new feature: LOAD AND SAVE entire banks as pure SYSEX messages (no
headers)(*.syx format).
This allows
(a) Embedded samples in native MA-1 format!
(b) Embedding the sysex code inside your sequencer song.
note: loading is not working fully yet
* new feature: STEREO LAYERS/KEYMAPS/SAMPLES !
* new feature: *.apex bank format loading (From AVM's Sample Studio)
(not tested for RAM samples)
(note: Apex banks have embedded samples)

* enhancement: DrumKit supports stereo samples (sorry no panning ...)
* enhancement: silent keymap ranges are drawn differently
* firmware workaround: stereo samples play in phase IF you set the delay
to 1 (0.6 millisec)
(This is automatically set for SampleStore, TonalProg Wiz and Drum Kit
Wiz)
THANK YOU Paul Hemsley for figuring this out!

* bug fix: aliases were sometimes not updated
* bug fix: All options in TonalProgram wiz are now functional
( vibrato, tremolo, brightness, slow attack, slow release) (all
didn't work before)
* bug fix: on start up there is a rare chance an external midi event
could cause a crash
* bug fix: krz objects with high id's didn't work
* bug fix: auto switch and replace program in properties sheets were
ignored
* bug fix: corrupt (not my fault) pbf files caused weirdness
* bug fix: "File/Save" is enabled after using Wizards
* bug fix: filter names are updated in Mod editor
* bug fix: wave audio is stopped when Open Dialog is closed
* bug fix: SampleStore chopped off the last character of program names
* and probably some other bugs that I unconsciously fixed

MIDI THRU

Well, everytime I send Marc a message I can't help first gushing about how exceptional Everest is, and the unprecedented rate at which updates are released and his interaction and support with its users, etc... ESPECIALLY in light of the initial fiasco with AVM (no editior for a year!!) when the card was released. Bravo, Marc!! Cheers! NOW we can create MUSIC. So...

One thing I would like to see on a future update (we all have some request, don't we...) is a button on the toolbar which switches MIDI THRU mode on and off. I'm using the Multimid adapter so that I can use Everest with Cakewalk, and this works great. The only problem is that Everest is in MIDI THRU mode, and it's shut off in Cakewalk, I can't just switch over to Cakewalk and begin recording, once I'm happy with a sound. So, once I want to begin recording, I have to switch MIDI THRU off in Everest and on in Cakewalk.
Okay, so this doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but try this 20 times or so every hour, when you tweaking all the sounds in the mixdown, and you'll see what I mean... The fewer the windows that must be opened, the better, and faster.

With this button, it would be a simple switching back from program to program, ultimately expediating the whole editing process. And that is a major goal of sound editors, no? Everest sure seems to think so.

Sorry this went on so long... Is this possible, Marc? Or, does anyone know of another multiclient configuration that would that would eliminate the switching MIDI THRU on and off all together? (with other sound editors I use it is not necessary, due to the drivers)

Thanks for the screen time!!
Tad.

Well, you could turn off thru in Everest and turn it on in Cakewalk or Cubase.... what ever u r using.... that is what i usually do....
But yes, it would be nice to have a button easily accessable that did it.

unsupported filter types

The marketing literature on the Apex (and its packaging
for that matter) states that the Apex has a Shaper
Filter and a Parametric/Notch Filter. These filter
types are also mentioned on the page about the
unreleased AVM Sample Studio. Is there any way for
Everest to support these mysterious filter types?

Mark

Re: unsupported filter types

I wish. I asked Chia from AVM about it, and he said they were not available
in the current firmware. I guess the hardware
can support it. Soon as it ever gets announced,
you bet it will be available in Everest.

Apparently, some of the filter parameters are programmable,
but only via the DOS editor. (don't get excited. by
programmable, I mean if you know how to program the MA-1 machine language
via hex bytes, i.e. rewrite the firmware!)

Converting analog bass instruments to pbf

i had some fine analog bass patches to my tropez+ (wfp)
now i bought a pinnacle card and converted the wfp:s
to pbf with awave 4.5 but when a load them into everest
the don´t sound the same, i cant use them as analog
sound single notes so that a press one tone and when i
press another it slides up or down to the new one, with
everest it plays the tones like an ordinary piano.
Why? can i fix this or dosen´t the MA1 chip support
this function.
please help me.
/Johan

Re: Converting analog bass instruments to pbf

It sounds like you want a portamento, which isn't
supported on the MA-1 chip. sorry.

Invalid Key

I'm hoping this message gets to Mark Lakata soon, The key I received from you comes up invalid on Everest 1.13, could please have some one resend it to me.

Everest Version 1.13 "Service Pack"

Microsoft uses the phrase "service pack" to mean
bug fix, so I'll use the same phrase. 1.13 fixes
a bug incurred in version 1.12: the scroll bars
and checkboxes in the layer editor got broken...

upload the new version now.

Apex driver problem - can't run Everest

It used to work fine, but recently, I have trouble
getting the Apex Wavetable driver to load
(particularly the input side, needed ONLY by patch
editors). I have found the only way to get it to run
is to go into the CMOS and force a "PnP Reset" at
boot time. This wouldn't be such a big deal, but I
have to do it EVERY TIME I BOOT. It's getting real
tiresome.

The same problem affects both of my Win95 Apex patch
editors: the pathetic one from AVM, and the wonderful
Everest. My pathetic DOS editor from AVM works fine!

Re: Apex driver problem - FIXED!!!

AVM advised that I have them reprogram the Engine
firmware, and that they always do a reprogram
when they upgrade an Apex to the Apex Pro. So
I had them do the upgrade/reprogram, and my
problem is solved - Everest runs perfectly every
time!!!

I just hope this is not a recurring event. Has
anyone out there had to reprogram more than once?
(I don't mean the ApexPnP.zip thing, which does
nothing).

Re: Apex driver problem - can't run Everest

Please tell AVM about the problem. Do you have the latest drivers from
the AVM web site? The drivers that ship on the CDROM
are known to do this.

The DOS editor doesn't use sysex messages to communicate with the editor (it writes directly
to the ISA bus), while the W95 editors go through the
MIDI sysex streams. There's nothing I can do about it, because
the direct method is undocumented.

I've told them several times, and they have no
help to offer. I have tried the newest driver,
and (it's been a while so my memory is hazy) it
had many serious bugs, so I had to revert to the
2nd newest driver.

Slide error?

The right slider in the keymap-editor doesn´t work,
in version 1.12 .
Is it only me who got this problem?

Magnus

Re: Slide error?

Do you mean vertical scroll bar that scrolls the layers up/down, or the
horizontal scroll bar that scrolls the keys left/right?

i'll look into this.

-Mark

Re: Slide error?

I mean the vertical scroll bar.

Swedish regards Magnus

Re: Slide error? Problem Fixed in 1.13

I fixed the problem in 1.13. Also the layer checkboxes
were broken, both caused by a bad windows
message map.

multiclient apex

Is it possible at all to run apex multiclient within Everest,
in a future version. I am sick of closing down cakewalk
to edit the samples with Everest. Everest would really be
the greatest "everest" of all patch editor, if it could fix
that.

I am looking forward to your response.
Keep up the work.
Ahmet

Re: multiclient apex

This is a copy of a post I sent to the Apex discussion board detailing how to get a multi-client system set up with the Apex (sort of !).

This message details my recent quest to get the Apex working as a multi-client system. For those who don't know what I'm on about, basically I wanted to be able to have Everest and a sequencer (Cubase in my case) running at the same time with access to all the functions in each program. This cannot be done using the current Apex Wavetable drivers since they are single-client (can only be used by one program at once).

The easiest way I thought was to use Hubi's Midi Loopback device connected to the Wavetable driver. However, although this works for most things, (including adjustment of sample parameters) it is not possible to download samples to the Apex using it. This is annoying as every time you want to add a new sample you have to shutdown the sequencer, reset the Wavetable drivers in Everest, download the sample and finally reload the sequencer. If you work like me and only think of new samples as a track progresses this becomes very annoying.

After taking a closer look at the actual Wavetable driver I thought of another solution. Basically, whatever AVM tell you (and they told me otherwise), the Wavetable driver is basically just the standard Microsoft MPU-401 driver. All they have done is recompiled it or even just hacked it and changed the name from 'Roland MPU-401' to 'Apex Wavetable'. This lead me to thinking that if I could get a standard multi-client MPU-401 driver that I could use that instead. I got one from PG Music at http://www.pgmusic.com/mpu401.htm (If anyone knows of any others please let me know).

However, this is not the end of the story as inevitably it didn't work straight away. I tried to get rid of the normal Apex driver and install the PG Music one instead. However, this didn't work as the new driver didn't recognise the Apex card. The only I could find way to get it to work is to install the PG driver while still keeping the Wavetable driver and set the base address and irq in the PG driver to the same as the standard driver. This I thought would cause problems but it doesn't seem to. I think the reason you have to keep the original drivers in place is something to do with the fact that the PG driver is not a true Windows 95 driver - I don't really know !

Anyway once this was done, I tried it out with the Media Rack. Everything seemed to work fine. MIDI files played fine through the MA/1 using the new driver. I then tried using Everest. No joy !! Everest couldn't find the MA/1 synth for some reason. What is this wierdness about the Apex system exclusive messages ? Why does it seem to work with the Microsoft standard MPU driver but with nothing else ???

Anyway to stop a long story from getting any longer, bascially as you have got both drivers installed as the same time you can set Everest to use the standard 'Apex Wavetable' driver and your sequencer, midi player etc. to use the PG multi-client driver. This works absolutely fine and means that you can have as many programs as you want using the Apex synth at the same time as long as you only have one program (there is only one - Everest) that needs to download stuff to the Apex.

This may seem messy, bu actually once its set up it works really well and needs no additional configuration. One word of warning - stop your sequence playing before you download a new sample otherwise it will be corrupted by MIDI data coming from the other driver.

Really all this is necessary beacuse of AVM's apparent inability to produce a proper multi-client driver for the Apex. I really don't think its that hard especially as it is largely based on a standard MPU driver and you just need to interleave the MIDI data. I would have thought that an experienced programmer at AVM could knock one up in less than a week. The Pinnacle has one and that uses the same synth as the Apex !

I hope this helps anyone having the same problems.

Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mark

Re: multiclient apex

Hopefully AVM will rewrite their drivers so that they
are as good as the Pinnacle drivers (which support multiclients).

Because I don't have an Apex currently, I can't verify this, but
some people have had success with Hubi's loopback.

Go to the Apex Unleashed webpage (follow the link
thorugh my Everest page) for info.

Re: multiclient apex

Multimid worked fine with me. Amazing amounts of ease
it is to have cakewalk and Everest running together.
But for some reason the author of the programme showed
no interest in replying back to my e-mail. Obviously he
doesn't read his mail or he doesn't like me>>

Anyone who succeded buying this little programme?

Ahmet

Everest is awsome!

Yes... Everest is awsome!

If you have not registered it yet... DO IT!

I have found it to be VERY usefull and timesaveing using it with my Pinnacle.

Version 1.12 now seems to be very efficient.

I wish other software and hardware companies would have this kind of dedication to customers.

Thanks!

Jacob Hargrave

PS (All you unregistered users... do it now! ;o)

Version 1.12

1.12 contains 1 bug fix (mod button caused crash), and
also a preview option when opening .wav or .pbf files!
It's pretty fun by itself and many people have asked for
it.

maniac!

Re: Version 1.12

Very cool... and I also like the intigration of the mod editor with the other editors... it makes things faster.

One thing that would make it easier and quicker for me to do stuff.... is to make it so you only need to single click on the patches in the bank page to change to them...

Double clicking is a hastle...

Could you make it so u only need to single click? :o) (I know I know... another thing to add...heh)

Thanks Mark!

Version 1.11 Ready

Version 1.11 is ready. Much improved bank editor!

follow link above to web site.

All Hail Mark Lakata!

I'm such a fan of the Everest editor. It's brought my
otherwise useless Apex card to life! AVM has struggled
in vain for over a year to bring out a pathetic editor,
and Mark has put them to shame with his polished,
feature-laden, and SUPPORTED product. I highly
recommend it to all owners of the Voyetra/TB Pinnacle
or the AVM Aoex.

Re: All Hail Mark Lakata!

: I'm such a fan of the Everest editor.

Couldn't agree more!
Why people moan on about the TB editor being crap
(and still in beta!), why not spend the 20 quid
and get a good editor - you've just spent 300 on
the Pinne itself so 20 quid isn't going to break
the bank...

Keep up the good work Mark!
(BTW, can we have a "Autoload" feature to load a
bank at start-up - had to slip a feature request
in the somewhere!)... <g>

Great Editor! needs a couple more features though...

Great patch editor!
Lots of great features...

But 2 more small thinks I would like to see in it:

The ability to click on a wave file and open it with an outboard wave editor which you could specify (like Sound Forge or WaveLab)

And the ability to copy patches back and forth in the Bank window... like drag and drop...

I think many other people would like these features also...

Any body else have comments?

Jacob Hargrave

P.S. Keep up the good work Mark...

Re: Great Editor! needs a couple more features though...

Both the external wave editor button and a MUCH better bank editor (with drag and drop)
will be in the next release.
