Software Description

From the Guitar FX BOX web site:

Just plug your electric guitar to the sound card input, start Guitar FX BOX and enjoy - your guitar will scream and sing! This high quality sound processing program is acting just like a good collection of guitar effects pedals. You can use several of them at the same time, even all of them if you need so.

Guitar FX BOX does REALLY real-time DSP. Signal is sampled from sound card input, processed and then sent to the output with VERY LOW LATENCY - virtually undetectable. This is achieved using DirectSound or WDM streaming for fast access to the hardware (sound card) and fast DSP algorithms optimized for realtime processing.

Besides that, Guitar FX BOX features intuitive user interface, supports presets and hot keys for quick presets changing, MIDI/Game controllers pedals for wah-wah effect, configurable tuner, file input/output and more...

Effects included:

  • Overdrive/Distortion
  • Echo
  • Reverb
  • Chorus
  • Wah-wah (AutoWah and EnvelopeWah)
  • Pitch shifter
  • Tremolo
  • I/O Bass/Mid/Treble EQ controls
  • Compressor
  • Phaser
  • Guitar tuner

New in v3.0

  • Tube amp simulator,
  • Impulse response (convolution) based speaker cabinets,
  • Improved distortion/overdrive,
  • More wah types,
  • Arbitrary graphic equalizers,
  • Volume swell effect,
  • Redesigned reverb, much richer now,
  • 64-bit processing,
  • Improved EQ quality,
  • Minor bug fixes

Sound Card Question

I had version 2.5 of the fx box and it worked fine without a sound card, I have a Yamaha 724 DS-1 chip set. I got version 2.6 and the sound is scratchy as hell.

I have Windows XP
192 MB Ram

Does anyone think a sound card would help the scrathiness.

System Freezes

My problem is that after using the Software in Windows Millenium, when I shut down my System, the system simply freezes up, with the desktop in the background and some weird green lines across the display. Since Windows doesn't respond, I then have to forcibly power off the system and that just isn't right. Can someone help here?

Thanks in advance,
FenderBender

Scratchy 2.6 in XP

I have the demo version of FXBOX 2.6, the sound is really scratchy no matter what I do. Can someone please help. I am desperate. I have version 2.5 also. I upgraded to windows xp and the sound is fine but there is big-time latency.

Re: Scratchy 2.6 in XP

Try downloading presets for this software and also change the setting under the setup tab when u start guitar fx box 1. choose the maximum sample rate 2. try selecting different input out devices 3 low your guitars volume. good luck

THIS IS AWESOME

Hi,
Just wanted to post my comments. This program is awesome. At first I thought it stunk. You do have to work with it a bit. Let me share what I did. I have an el-cheapo Kramer foucus (great buy) with a single coil PU. My PC is an AMD Duron @1.33 MHz with 512MB Ram AND WIN98SE. Fist I found the lastest drivers from creative labs for my sound card that support WDM read the help file that come with FX BOX (took some looking to find the right update but they are out there. This decreased the delay (latency) BIG TIME. I'm down to the min. setting of 5ms now. I also had to play with the check boxes under settings a few times to get the right comination so I did not have the "pops" and "clicks". Then I played and tweeked the sound to get what I want. Guys, those of you that are bashing this program have not spent enough time. The person that wrote this made it very easy to use. For rock try this. Make sure you are in the LINE IN jack and use the Windows mixer to get the level to 0dB. Turn the distortion on. If you hear clean guitar you need to MUTE the recording mixer in the windows. Now set the output to 0dB. Play with just the distortion settings till you get the sound, and sustain you like. My favorite is hard dist. with Satuation on. Now put both the LOW PASS filter in mid postions. Now play with these until you get the TONE you want. You MUST get a good sound hear FIRST. If you get pop and click got try the setting options I'm using a sample 22kHz and set mono instead of stereo(stereo does not matter until you delay or chorus and even then its no big deal it) Turning stereo of allows more effects and you to use less delay and not have clicks. Now Go to the EQ and turn the option on. If you hate you guitar PU you could turn on the EQin this would let you shape you PU BEFORE distortion (I.E. you can have anypickup you want go look at the seymor duncun web site to see the graphic shape of some famous pus.) For example the Gibson PAF is a ver MID P.U. so you could take you 5.00 P.U. and boost the MID to make it sound more PAF like. My elcheapo PUs sounded fine tso I did not check tyhe EQ in. I'm am a 80s leftover though and used to have a Boogie (Metalica sound) the thing I like about my Boogie was the Post preamp actice EQ. I could set the classice EQ V shape and have a sound that could break windows and peal paint off the wall and had enough crunch to hurt someone. So guess what the OUT EQ does. You got it. I can get that boogie tone or any other tone. Now go back and play with the Low pass again in the distortion and do some final tweek. You should have a killer tone now. No turn on some delay or reverb. Any clicks or pops go back to settings and tweek. I was able to recreate the Van Halen 1 guitar sound pretty close with a single coil $80 strat copy. And I tried the REVALVER program and hated it. It do a good speaker cab simulation but the delay time (latency) was just too much. The author of this program saya his has low latency and its true. Go the the Guitar FX box web site and look at what in the future amp modeling. Not the mention the already included recording and play back wave features. If this guy can get a drum maching and multi tracks with this look out. If you can't make this work your doing something wrong. And my thanks to the author for making a great program.

Acoustic Guitar in 'Line In'?

Will my acoustic guitar, that has a pickup attached, be connected to Line In socket of sound card and used?

Re: Acoustic Guitar in 'Line In'?

: Will my acoustic guitar, that has a pickup attached, be connected to Line In socket of sound card and used?

Yes, I have a takamine and the preamp is hot enough to go into the line in. Also, take your time this is a great program but it take some "tweeking"

The sound is really bad

The sound is really bad.bufff. The world needs more time to get something good about guitar softwares

Re: The sound is really bad

Hey dude,
I thought the sound was bad too until I took some time to work with it. Now I think its great. How were you hooking it up? What sounds were you looking for? I wouldn't give up on this software just yet.

same problem

i keep having this problem saying that my wave input device is allocated by another application but i have none running.what do i do to fix this problem?thanx!!!

Re: same problem

Something is running. Have you check the task manager. When my creative lab drivers loaded they install some SBI program which was a mixer. Also if you are not using the WDM drivers for your sound card I highly recomend it. Also when you go to setup see which input device is selected. Look at the list. Also go to the Windows device manager and multi media check your devices there. Hope that helps you aout

Too Much Delay w/ XP 1.8ghz

I'm getting a one sec delay with everything turned down.

My WDM input/output is getting errors.

I'm using an intel MoBo w/ integrated Sound. Any Help?

Re: Too Much Delay w/ XP 1.8ghz

I had the same problem, but when I installed the 2.6 version it wasn't there... I used the 2.5 before, and I had like a 2 seconds delay. And I have a 2.0 Ghz. If I used the maximum delay settings on "60" ms, I got a real crunchy sound, but it wasn't delayed.

You're getting a delay because you have onboard sound. The onboard sound (AC3 chip)isn't really a soundcard - it relies on your cpu to process the signal rather than a soundchip on a soundcard. Onboard sound can cause chronic latency with any audio applications, esp. when running plugins. I recommend you get a cheap soundcard, but not too cheap mind you. A very good card for a small price is the SB Live 5.1 Value.(about $40 US i think.i'm not from US) www.creaf.com
oh crap i just read how old your post is. oh well i'll send it anyway. if you need any help email me ben_lives_here@hotmail.com

Re: Too Much Delay w/ XP 1.8ghz

try setting the latancy at 100 with WinXP
it sounds just as good as latency set at 20 with Win98
(at least with mine)

Re: Too Much Delay w/ XP 1.8ghz

I'm running XP on a P3-450 w/ SoundBlaster 128 and having no problems at all even while running Bearshare at high download rates. My latency is set at 20.

My guess is that you have too many other programs running in the background and/or not enough memory... or you have some spyware taking up your processing power (Gator, etc.).

I have a problem

When i press start i get this error message:
"Error opening wave input device. Selected Sample rate is not supported. Has someone seen this message before?

Click on!

You need to click on setup.reg and im sure its gonna work.

I still have this problem

Error opening wave input device. Selected Sample rate is not supported

I Still have this problem, wot should i do?!??!??

Re: I still have this problem

click Setup tab on Guitar FX Box and select your input and output device (try and error) until you find the match that will make it works for you.

: Error opening wave input device. Selected Sample rate is not supported

: I Still have this problem, wot should i do?!??!??

Re: I have a problem

i think i came across this. under the 'files' tab, the input file must be the same quality (sample rate /bit rate, stereo / mono etc) as assigned to the bits under the set up tab.
However, to have this error message when you press start, the input file must be already 'switched on'. Make sure this is disabled before you press start.
