sound recording

keep me updated of the sofware used in sound recording.especially used in advertisements.

pt

na

It works, just takes some tinkering!

It works great on a used Dell Latitude cpi PII 300 with 128 meg of ram. It also worked on a generic PIII450 desktop with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz soundcard. It does not like my Turtle Beach Montego II. The most successful soundcard per the forum at Digidesign seems to be Soundblaster or built in soundcards like the Crytal in my Dell laptop that emulates a Soundblaster. If you really want to make it work, search the Pro Tools Free forum @ http://duc.digidesign.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=UBB36
for everything written by Ken Le Gault. Follow every tip regarding setting up the PC,including disabling auto insert on the CD, shutting down ALL other programs, disabling network cards by setting up a Pro Tools hardware profile, etc. Also, follow these directions for setting up your PC for recording:

http://www.pcrecording.com/winsetuptips.htm

Even with a lowly PII 300 and only 128 megs of ram, I can play back the 8 track demo with no problem and the recordings I have made so far have gone fine. To avoid the latency issue, just mute the track(s) you are recording to and monitor the instrument you are recording through a cue mix on your external mixer.

I have bought and used n-Track, Cakewalk Music Creator and Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro. I like the price and customer oriented upgrades for n-Track and the easy, intuitive, plug and go Cakewalk aps, but I LOVE Pro Tools Free. Even this free version has some amazing editing features. I can take these basic tracks to virtually any studio in Austin to have them mixed.

Leave it alone

Disastrous software. Screwed everything up. Don't even think of trying it. Look at something like Tuareg.

ProTools 4 the rich man by the rich man

I checked out pro tools and I wasn't so excited about it. I have been using Sonar for a long time and have pretty much mastered every possible technique on it. My masters are EVERY bit as comparable to commercial cds. The end result is about having a damn good ear and making sure that ear hears exactly whats printed on the disc. Everything in between is just a bunch of tools to help complete the task. It doesnt matter what you use as long as you have what -YOU- need to get the end result. I have to say in the highest sense to avoid Pro Tools unless you have money to burn. And I know as well as others that the big recording industry spends $100 on a roll of toilet paper, so their gonna buy the expensive stuff no matter what. But I say by experience Pro Tools does NOT do any better than what I use. If you dont have the ear for getting a good demo than you should get someone who has a good ear. And Hey, many other programs out there at least give you more than 8 tracks to work with unlike Pro Tools FREE. Looks like a way to get you to spend your hard earned money on the biggie. Don't fall into a trap. I have been into music and sound since I was a foot high. My first project was ripping all the speakers out of the radios and tv's at 4 years old. Now I use SONAR exclusively and they pay me big money to do it. Nothing else is needed.

md8 to pro tools

I have an Md8 recorder. I currently use the stereo outs and send this to soundforge on my computer. there i do a little touch up and create cd's. Ufortuantely the sound forge that I have is a two track stereo deal so I have to do all the mixing on my Md8. I would prefer to do it in pro tools cuz it's free and I dont have to buy eq's and shit. I want to send each track individually to the eight tracks in pro tools. I can do this one at a time from my md8 channel outs. The problem is that they wiil not all be in sync once they are in pro tools. (I can't start the recording at the same time every time). I just wanted to ask if there is any way to manually drag each track to the same start time. If I can mark the beggining of each track and then physically move each mark to a mutual start time so every thing is synced up. My current recordings sound pretty good. But I think I could tweak them a little and make them sound better if I could get them into Pro tools(and all starting at the same time). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Jeff

Re: md8 to pro tools

I have an MD8 also. I do something similar, in that I will bounce my MD8 tracks out to Vegas Pro (which is like a poor man's Pro Tools) where I can then totally manipulate each track if I need to. From Vegas Pro, I mix down to Sound Forge for mastering and then I'll burn it to CD-R

One thing you might try is record a click or a 4-count before your music starts on the MD8 on all 8 tracks simultaniously using the group assign function. Then once the tracks are loaded into Pro Tools, you can drag the tracks so the clicks line up. This will get your Pro Tools tracks synched close enough for starters...

Tracks Bleeding

my machine:
amd xp 2700+
1 gig ram
60 gig HD
SB Audigy Platinum

problem:
I record a track - I could record all 8 tracks at a time for that matter - and it plays back just fine. But when I record a new seperate track, the other track(s) bleed through. For example, i record my guitar on track 1, listen back to it, and it sounds perfect. The best way to illustrate the problem is by unplugging my guitar amp from my sound card, so there is no external signal at all comming in from outside of my computer. Then arming only (of course) track 2 and hitting record. Now track 2 records/picks up a quiet version of whatever is on track 1. Next, I rewind, mute track 1 and solo track 2 and PRESTO: a nifty qiueted down version of track 1 emerges from the speakers.
I have seen the posts about AMD problems. Does anyone know if this is a SB Audigy problem, or is there something obscurely arcane I need to do with busses/input/output settings in PT? I don't think it's too much to expect being able to listen to track 1 through headphones while recording a 2nd track that is completely seperate: meaning that track 2 would ONLY record what is comming in from outside of the computer through the soundcard, and not re-recording a watered down track 1. BTW, track 2-8 all record, but the bleeding is unacceptable.
Samplitude 7, Nuendo 2, and Cubase SX all work fine on this computer: the tracks stay seperate/don't bleed. I want(ed) to see what the whopla is over the infamous and widely celebrated ProTools. While fully understanding that the real deal takes real expensive dedicated hardware, and most likely dual G4/G5's, I am not too impressed with what it does with what I have - esp when Samplitude, etc work awesome.
Any pointers greatly appreciated. If this is just a matter of the program not getting along with the hardware, I'll remain perfectly happy with what I have - i'd rather buy a car then satisfy my protools curiosity.
Thanx,
Ken

Never Mind - Fixed it :)

Just needed the latest drivers for my sound card. Seems to work ok now.

Thanx

Re: Allocate recording track

okay, someone else who is probably gooing mental as well. I think I have the same situation. 59 available gigs and the program "can't allocate recording space" I have been going bonkers trying to figure this one out. I will let you know if I can figure it out. I bet is is clicking a box or something easy.

Q: When you go to set-up in the pull down menu, is your record drive your hard drive? I can't change it but in some of the support text it shows you can. email me if you get anywhere with this. I will too.

good luck
Joe

DAE error 6008 on PC's

i got an intel 1.2 GHz with 256 pc 133 ram. the sound is on board (MSI motherboard). im running win98 just to get the fucker (AKA PT free) going and the popular DAE 6008 pops up..... now that you know the story i have some questions:
1. this error is attributed to lack of memory or like mentioned previously on this postboard, is it a problem with the sound.
2. how the fuck do you know if u got win 98SE, does it say 2nd edition on startup or what?

3. is that tony kuzub a total cock-knocking buttmunch or what?

Help! I get delay

I'm just playing around putting analog signals into my mac G4. trying to just put down some ideas in real time.

When I add a second track there is a noticable delay. Any way around that?
is it just a fact of "protools free" ?

Angry, rude swearing guy- please do not reply.

Thank you to the sane and helpful for your help.

jh

Re: Help! I get delay

Try making sure that the amount of hard drive usage corresponds with how much space you have to use. increase buffer sizes as much as you can while your at it, not just within the protools setups either. & if your just doing it for shits & dont care how bad it sounds, decrease sampling rates & bit quality, ( like 16 bit instead of 24 or 32) otherwise, yeah, sometimes ptfree just sucks. ah, and make sure you arent running any other programs, or like on pc, close any running applications on the task bar.

read the requirements carefully

its not compatible with AMD processors. It'll run on my K6-3 400 but randomly crashes my computer, so i have to save constantly if I use it.

MAC OS-DAE Error 28479-iMic

I'm getting DAE Error 28479 when I try to load ProTools Free 5.0.1. I have an external Griffin iMic that I'd like to use, but in troubleshooting this problem, I've disconnected it (chose built-in mic and speakers), and have also updated my Apple Audio Extension in Classic9. Can anyone suggest any solutions for getting ProTools to start up for me? Thanks!!

FOLLOWUP, Re: MAC OS-DAE Error 28479-iMic

I had the same problem and found that when I started in classic I was able to use the ProTools Free.
