Cannot listen to .WAV, .AIFF, .mp3 rendered by REAPER

I downloaded the REAPER software and it looks very useful but when I render tracks into any format such as .WAV and .AIFF, Windows mediaplayer cannot play them saying it requires a 'codec'. I cannot render into .mp3 format as the progam complains the the lame_enc.dll is require even though a copy is enstalled in the 'Plug-ins' folder. Can anybody help with these issues?
