Software Description

TiMidity is a MIDI to WAVE converter and player that uses Gravis Ultrasound(*)-compatible patch files to generate digital audio data from General MIDI files. The audio data can be played through any sound device or stored on disk. On a fast machine, music can be played in real time. TiMidity runs under Linux, FreeBSD, HP-UX, SunOS, and Win32, and porting to other systems with gcc should be easy. TiMidity++ is not only a converter but also the real-time player that can play a MIDI file in real time. TiMidity does not require an external MIDI instrument module to play MIDI file; performs with software power.

i compiled this s**t program only to find out there is no default config file. you know what that is **** ing stupid. i couldn't even find an example .cfg file anywhere in the documentation.. wtf do they expect I am not a **** ing developer and i do not expect to have to **** ing be one to use their software why do they bother.

It isn't that difficult.Create a file named "timidity.cfg" with the following text in it:

# This is a config file for Timidity.

No. Use timidity. Do a search on the web for timidity or timidity++. Learn how to install it correctly by visiting other sites. Most people only download this small program and don't download the large sound patch sets.

this is the 3rd Version of this "TIMIDITY" that I've Downloaded.
I know its Stupid because I knew before that it dont works.
I dont know why it was at musicsoftware , because its a Puzzle-Game
for Programmers or something like that .
Maybe this f...... Programm could work some Day , but please
until then dont put it onto Hitsquads SMM Page.
Best to erase it permanently so that noone get nerved about it again..

It works fine-- but you also need to download Gravis sound patches (such as eawpats) and to modify your timidity.cfg file to reflect your installation. It's your loss if you don't want to try.

n-Track easily does Midi to Wav conversion and also anything else you can think of. For $50 it blows everything else out of the water even similar progs that cost 10 times as much.

It SHOULD blow everything else out of the water, but I've spent three week trying to convert midi to wav. Everything appears to work - but the result is always total silence from the so-called Wav files. User instructions have gaps and don't quite match with the latest software. Help and online help are not much help.
If it does work on your system, then it is super and wellworth having.
On the other hand, if like me you have unidentifiable problems then it is money wasted.
The interface is quite user-friendly, unlike many other audio programs.. Why do programmers/designers think that everything has to look like a (very) miniature hi-fi. what's wrong with a simple "press-button" interface with clear labels
for each action and a "help" file for each. Which is more important - that it looks good and shouts the programmer's cleverness, or that users easily see what they have to do and have clear plain-language guidance?
As I said, if n-track works on your system - then get it. On the other hand, make sure it does work for you.

Finally, after umpteen false starts...it works! My stupidity: didn't extract the pats, duh!! Also, the timidity.cfg has to point to the eawpats directory, whereever you're keeping it. Haven't has much experience with the console version yet, but good things come to those that wait. Save yourself $$ and keep the faith!

This is really clever software. It is difficult to get going but it is worth it. I am going to be burning the wav file conversions to CD and gigging with the CD.

If you are having dramas getting it going, get someone who is good with dos or Linux to give you a hand. But please stop all this whining that it does not work.

Before everyone complains and cries "dis here don't work, boo hoo":
1) this is a huge download: you need to download all of the sound patches with it (ca. 15-20 MB). The files must be installed in the proper directories.
2) the timidity.cfg file must be configured first.

People can't seem to follow directions. I love this player: the patches sound excellent. My only complaint is that the GUI interface doesn't always display correctly (fonts not fitting inside windows, being a Japanese GUI)... nonetheless, it's worth the large download definitely: excellent sound, and I can finally render .midis to .waves

thank you for timidity, i heard about it when i've been using linux the 1st time - and i'm glad having found such an easy and cheap way of getting quite good MIDI-Output/Sound with a normal and also cheap soundcard!
