Software Description

Total Recorder records streaming audio, mic input, DVD, and CD. The resulting sound file can be stored on your hard drive in WAV format (plain or compressed) or MP3 format and, if needed, is ready to be put on CD-R.

The main features of Total Recorder include

Record sound being played by other computer programs (e.g. RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, Quick Time, WinAmp) including live Internet broadcasts. This feature is unique to Total Recorder and is not available in the vast majority of other sound recording programs
Convert different sound formats to WAV format (plain or compressed) or MP3 format, providing you have a player capable of playing a particular format
Record Internet Telephony conversations - even full duplex
Record from any sound card input line. For example, you can record from CD or you can hook up a cassette player and record from it
A built-in scheduler lets you schedule future recordings and playbacks. Or you can use Total Recorder’s command line options with an external scheduler such as Microsoft Task Scheduler

The potential uses of Total Recorder are endless. Here are some examples of how you can use Total Recorder:

Convert your old sound files (e.g. AU files) to WAV format and then compress them to a modern format, such as MP3 or RA. Or you can record them to your CD-R
Record sound from your favorite game program
Schedule the recording of a live Internet show and replay it later at a convenient time, similar to programming your VCR
Make an audio book using a text-to-speech program

Total Recorder uses a virtual sound driver to capture the sound output from another program. By installing this driver, and setting this device as the default, different sound reproducing programs send their output stream to Total Recorder's driver and not to the driver of a real device. Total Recorder then passes the information to the sound card driver.

A new Recording Wizard allows users to easily specify their recording settings. The Wizard can walk users through the setups for a variety of different recording scenarios.
The Total Recorder sound driver has been enhanced and will now allow you to record several scheduled recordings at the same time.
Support for skins that allow the user to customize the look and feel of the user interface. There are several skins supplied with the program and there is also a free-of-charge Total Recorder Skin Design Tool that allows the user to develop their own skins.
"Monitoring mode" allows you to monitor sound signals passed through Total Recorder when it is not recording. You can preview the sound levels before you begin an actual recording.
A new display facility allows users to see a consolidated display of the activities of all audio applications running on the PC.
Ogg Vorbis is now supported through a free-of-charge Ogg Vorbis Add-On. This add-on is based on the latest Ogg Vorbis engine.

Suddenly I get right channel only!

After months of working great, Total Recorder now records only to the right channel! What happened? I found this in the fact, but I can't find the checkboxes they refer to. Can anyone help?

From their FAQ:

When I try to record streaming audio, my recording can be heard from only the right speaker even though the original sound is stereo. Why?

This is the expected behaviour if you have checked both of the check boxes: "Record also input streams" and "Put each speaker in a separate channel" (formerly "Make Stereo"). In this case, each speaker voice (when recording Internet telephony) will go to a separate channel. When recording anything other than Internet telephony, and both boxes are checked, it will lead to this situation.

I don't know what is best and I need to know fast! I understand your frustration, however i cannot help. I was hoping for the minidisc player to be able to just send the data over the data cable, but it appeared that the cable was only intended to put songs onto the minidisc player from mp3 files. Seems like the technology was only developed for music users not music performers or producers. If you have subsequently found out anything useful let me know i have a bunch of stuff waiting to record from minidisc but i cant do it.
A low quality recording can be made by using a male male stereo cable from the minidisc out to the computer mic input.
i am investigating a program called total recorder a friend just recommended to me that can record much better than the standard windows recorder.

lost drivers

I deleted the drivers (regedit) by mistake for version 4.1b. How do I get the drivers again to re-install.

Why did my Total recorder automatically get uninstalled even though I bought the 5 version in November 2004? Interestingly somehow the registration key was also deleted from the Highcriteria email. Being an IT guy I do know that it can be done. Was it done by your company?
