Multi-track recording?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to record a second track and have the first one play. The help files are no help, and there's no contact info.
It is not a sound card problem. No matter what I do, I can either record the second track alone, rerecord the first track, or play the first track, but
I can't get the first track to play at all if I am recording the second track, whether I use the individual track controls or the master controls.
How do I get this thing to work?
