Software Description

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility. It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

New in v1.8.4 Build 29958

  • Export > Raw Audio defaults to .mp3 extension when the audio track is in MPEG layer III format.
  • Capture: Optimized display code slightly when main window is minimized.
  • Fixed another crash with uncompressed paletted video.
  • Fixed several dialogs that had placeholder icons.
  • "Open shared job list" dialog now shows the correct title.
  • Fixed shared job list sync errors when using a job file originally saved from non-shared mode.
  • Image sequence export jobs didn't reload properly.
  • Perspective filter no longer shows garbage preview frame before a frame is sampled.
  • Capture: The "track active window client area" setting of the screencap driver is now saved properly.
  • Capture: Fixed crash when exiting Set Custom Format dialog with no width or height selected.
  • DV: Fixed noise when audio switches between 12-bit and 16-bit encoding.
  • D3D: Fixed wrong-boxing of video when source frame is YCbCr and larger than screen.
  • Video > Select Range dialog now works again. It now sets the selection.

virtualdub problems

I used to use virtual dub 1.47 all the time until i used it on one particular avi file i was converting the avi to mpeg when it crashed,i haven't been able to use it since it just keeps crashing all the time i have even tried formatting my pc but the programme still does the same also i have tried to download from other sites but it always crashes please could anyone help or knows anyone who can

Rename the *.mpg file like *.vob, supported fomat by VirtualDubMpg2.

Yep, it's caused because it can't open MPEG-2 files, apparently DV-Tool can. So i'm going to try that now.

Same problem here. I'm trying to hard code some subs to an mpeg file but I cant open it "pack synchronization error"

Tried remuxing with Xmuxer but still have same error message in virtual dub. Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe the video is encoded with the Ligos MPEG Codec. That is my problem but I can't find a program to convert Ligos Mpeg into Divx.

gary is right!! i had the same problem and it was cause it was an mpeg2 file that virtualdub does not support. hope it helps.

Alright, I figured it out. After trying almost everything I tried Xmpeg 4.3 Alpha and it allowed my to convert these unuseable MPEG files into whater I want, AVI, MPEG2, XVID. Yay!

I hope this helps others.

Hi there is somewhere a version of virtualDub
1.5.1 which has an VFAPIConvEN.exe and it worked
fine with mpeg2.
It can convert ton an avi i think.

Forgot that the normal version of virtual dub didnt have mpeg-2 support. That was the main reason that i was getting this pack synch error. Anyway if you download the mpeg-2 version of virtualdub (http://es.geocities.com/dextstuff/#VirtualDub) it worked fine for me. Unless its some other problem

It's not an unsupported format!
It opens the file halfways and then complains, I swear on someone real important guy's grave that it's not because v-dub doesn't support the file...

I don't know the resolution either though... I'm also looking, but I'm starting to get real annoyed, reading all those incorrect responses to the question ;/

Hmm.. i tried using this program to edit a 2 hour avi file, to take off the credits in the end. on saving it as a new file, and playing it... after every frame or 2 the video freeze for 5 seconds and the audio gets over before the video! could someone help me get rid of the freezing of the video frames?

Good Program.
I really like the way it reduces a 2.5 hour video to 200-300 Meg. The only Set back is that there is no tunning feature to set TV channels. If this feature was added it would be the best out there....

I use virtualdub and I compressed
my clips with this program (Convert them from mpg to avi ) by these parameters:
format: DivX-Fast motion
video Compression: 645
audio :64kb/s 44100 Hz for DivX
but when I see them by media player or other programs like XingDVD and I try to scroll the clip ( go forward or back ) the player stops and after 2 or 3 seconds the frame appeared and playing of the clip will go on.
Please tell me what is the problem?
and what is the best player for playing these clips?

Probably it is the DivX decompression you should blame. You are asking from the program to go somewhere that it didn't expect you to ask! But that's not really a problem! It does it on ASF, MOV and many more. 2-3 seconds is nothing..
