Software Description
VocalWriter is a music synthesizer that can actually sing your lyrics. Using breakthrough technology developed by KAE Labs, VocalWriter allows you to synthesize the words and lyrics for your MIDI compositions. No more lame oboe or sax substitutions. In addition, vocals are polyphonic and multi-timbral. This means they can sing in chorus with many different voices.
Besides offering over 85 different human, synthetic and special effect voices for the vocals, VocalWriter is also a General MIDI music synthesizer. Your MIDI vocals can have full instrumental accompaniment. Using a custom high-quality software synthesizer, you can import, edit and play your Standard MIDI Files directly from VocalWriter. If you are recording, you can even save your music to AIFF files.
VocalWriter is also a full-featured MIDI file editor. In addition to the usual music editing functions, VocalWriter includes special features to support singing. Adding and editing lyric tracks is fully automated. You simply type the lyrics and VocalWriter does the rest. Finally, VocalWriter supports real-time input/output to your external MIDI equipment.

Will Vocal Writer work in any of the Mac Emulaters?
Does anyone know if Vocal Writer will work in any of the Mac Emulaters? I tried unsuccessfully to run it on the "executor" emulator. Has anyone had success with any of the others?
OS X
I don't think VocalWriter will run in the classic environment in OS X. I've tried it on one computer so far, and I have no response yet from Kae Labs. Anyone else have any success?
Re: OS X
Confirmed: it doesn't run in the classic environment of 10.0 or 10.1, but it runs fine in 9.2
Do you know if it will work
Do you know if it will work in 8.6?
cool software
one word-awesome
similar Windows software?
Does anybody know of a similar program for Windows?
Great program, but will I buy it?
Answer, probably not. Reason being that there seems to be a lot of little problems with it and OS9, mostly related to scrolling: score will not scroll while playing, karaoke window remains on the first four lines, beat/measure counter stays at 1:1, etc. And after going two years without an update, it's unlikely the authors will make one now. Otherwise, excellent program. I wish there was a way to take the high-quality sounds from this program and use them in leiu of QT4's bargain-basement sounds--that's how good stuff sounds with this program. Oh, and the voice part of the program isn't bad, either... :)
Hi!!!

VocalWriter phase problems
How come all the voices disappear when I mix down to mono? Is there a phase problem?
Re: VocalWriter phase problems

Turn off reverb. This is a pain because it defaults back to on when you restart the software. However, it fixes the phase problem.

I LOVE IT! 3 problems though...
I LOVE VOCALWRITER! It's amazing!
I have had 3 problems, though.
Sometimes it will unexpectedly quit, and tell me that the system is overloaded if I try to open it again and play anything. Then I have to restart.
Also, sometimes it says that there isn't enough RAM to open some MIDIs, but I have 64MB, and have tried different RAM settings for VocalWriter.
Finally, I wish it had controls for each track's panning, balance, reverb, and other settings.

it works!
There was a little groping around in the dark, but I
figured out how to record music and enter text.
I wanted to put my songs on my web site (http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1866)
it would be nice if you could export the files as MIDI,
but that option destroys the singing. Better plan:
Export the files as AIFF, then use RealEncoder to turn
them into RealAudio.
RE: it works!
"...it would be nice if you could export the files as MIDI..."
You can. Choose "Export..." instead of "Play-to-Disk..." in the File menu.
Also, I agree with what you said about "groping around in the dark". I wish it had at least a little "getting started" manual, but that's one of the main features you get when you register. Still, it didn't take too long to figure out, and once I did, it was VERY quick and easy to do what I wanted! I LOVE IT!
Vocalwriter platform support.
Well, I just downloaded Vocalwriter and used it with my G3 266 system. It is a wonderful program. I doubt a Windows 95/98/NT version will be available, since the Macintosh already has these advanced capabilities built in today. Go Mac!
Re: Vocalwriter platform support.
I wouldn't say that my SoundBlaster AWE-64 is a high-end midi-system (especially because the support under Windows NT is bad) but I would appreciate it very much if they were planning to port vocal writer to other platforms (be it Windows or Linux). To be more precise: I would buy it immediately.
Regards
Peter
Go Macintosh!
I doubt Windows could support anything like this, considering their limitations on one sound at a time. They have to use slow software mixers to do anything with multiple sounds. I agree, go Macintosh!
Also, most MIDIs are created on the Macintosh because of OMS, MIDI Manager, QuickTime's built-in MIDI support, and the fact that almost all MIDI hardware/software is Mac-only.
However, I do have to say that it's slightly easier to find MIDI software synthesizers for Windows, but that's because there are more people using Windows, and MIDI is a common music format in general.
Re: Go Macintosh!
Hmm, i'll probably never return to this site but i have to say uve got it all wrong. Im a computer tech i know what im talking about. Mac's have great hardware design, but a limiting and almost patronizing operating system (windows for mac would me kewl). Also a great many software synth cards and other cards are only available on PC because they require more ports or other requirements. And a lot more non-professional musicians are getting into MIDI on PC, because they get into the technical stuff first....
Anyways. I have nothing agaainst MACs. You just cant tell me there the greatest on earth. After all IBM owns APPLE anyways and who in there right ming would release a computer without a floppy disk (or even an optional one)..eg IMac
Re: Go Macintosh! - yeah
Yeah, i think the "one sound per time" idea for
windows was back when we all had crappy sound
cards. All the decent sound cards (and many crappy
cards) have multi-voice. The sb-live! is a good
example - fully reprogrammable spu, at 40mhz...
plus soundfonts galoré... maybe you haven't
read anything on pc's for a couple of years..
Re: Go Macintosh! - yeah
Well, it's more that most programs now are designed to run their sound through the operating system's drivers, which either uses a software mixer or redirects the sounds to the hardware mixer on newer sound cards. I was referring to when most programs took direct control of the sound card, but this isn't really common anymore.
Re: Go Macintosh! - yeah
maybe you havent been using the latest macs lately... oh yeah... sb live is coming to the mac also, although ive never really liked its synth on whatever rinky dinky platform like windows. vocalwriters synth puts it to shame. poor pc user
Re: Go Macintosh! - yeah
Hi, Andrew....how do you enter lyrics on Vocalwriter? Thanks, Ivan
vocalwriter
brilliant idea and it works too! what about being able to change the formants of the voice like an additive synth so you can make your own sounding voice. what about copying the voices of famous singers like pavarotti.

can you send me vocalwritter please?

No Windows 95 Version Available Yet
Since we announced VocalWriter a few days ago we have
received a large number of emails asking us if there is
a Windows 95 version of this program available to
download, however at this point in time it is only
available for Power Macs and we aren't aware of any
similar software for Win 95/98 at this time.
We will announce any new software like this in our
Newsletter so please subscribe to it on our Home Page
for updates (please don't send us any more emails on this topic).

Macs are the primary MIDI systems
Macs are what are mainly used for making MIDIs anyway (ever compared how they sound in QuickTime to how they sound in a Windows synthesizer?), and Y2K isn't going to leave much but Macs anyway.
Sorry if I'm posting way too many anti-Windows things, it's just that my friends keep trying to convince me that Macs are bad. They'll see when Y2K comes, though.
Hehe, this is funny.
Hah. Eating my words. Like Y2K did anything to anyone. Oh well. I still prefer Macs, but I no longer bother with Mac/PC arguements.

What a pile of bullshit, idiot...
