Software Description

Square Circle are designers of WaveSurgeon, a breakbeat (drum loop) tool, designed to automate the process of editing samples. WaveSurgeon automatically detects segments and loop points within a sample, and will:

  • Save a midi timing template of the sample to a standard midi file.
  • Save segments into a SoundFont, DLS, Gigasampler, or Pinnacle bank file, and also transmit via SDS and SMIDI (full support for the Yamaha A3000 / EX, Akai S2000 series, and E-Mu ESI samplers included).
  • Slow down and speed up a loop without changing its pitch,and transpose / pitch bend a loop without changing its speed in real time (with sequencer);

    Two versions of WaveSurgeon are now available - the Basic Registration, and the Advanced Registration. SMIDI and SCSI sampler support, as well as DirectX plugin capablility, are only present in the Advanced Registration; however, the Basic Registration is identical in all other respects. Future upgrades for the Advanced Registration include support for additional samplers, and new beat mangling features; however, upgrades to the Basic version are continually developed.

    Uses for WaveSurgeon include:

    • Automatically picking out drum samples (segments) from loops;
    • Replacing single drum sounds with others;
    • Using the midi timing template to replace the original sounds in a loop with others;
    • Reprogramming loops, creating new loops or fills.
    • Speedily editing not just drum beats, but also vocals + other types of sample;
    • Precisely editing loops with WaveSurgeon's editing tools.
    • Filtering with soundcard / sampler on-board filters, and adding effects (reverb,etc.) in real time.
    • Overlaying loops which would otherwise be at a different tempo;
    • Creating SoundFonts for use with the Koan regenerative music program;
    • Creative editing with DirectX plugins.

    WaveSurgeon features a full range of editing tools. These include the ability to add, move, disable / enable and lock / unlock points, and silence/ reverse segments. There is also full windows clipboard support, allowing the user to copy and paste segments around within the sample. Export of a sample via the clipboard to a dedicated sample editing program is also possible, allowing external processing before being pasted back into WaveSurgeon.

    random acts of kindness

    Pay It Ahead

    1) Would you like to help make the world a better place?

    2) Would you do one random act of kindness to help?

    3) Do you believe an act of kindness has its rewards?

    When your answer is yes to these three questions, just follow the instructions below and be a part of a miracle.

    Pay It Ahead Instructions

    1) Do something kind or helpful for someone this week.
    2) Have faith that your act of kindness will help make the world a better place.
    3) Pay It Ahead. Give a gift of One Dollar ($1.00) to each of the people on the list below for the acts of kindness that they have already done. Gifts are tax-free and legal of course! Include a brief description of your act of kindness when you mail your $1.00 gift to each person. When you write a description for the #6 person, also mention that you have moved them to the #5 position.

    #1 S. Cameron/ 213, 10654 Whyte Ave/ Edmonton, AB/ Canada/ T6E 2A7
    #2 V. Goulet/ 1103, 2914-109 Street/ Edmonton, AB/ Canada/ T6J 7E8
    #3 L. Anton/ #301 12403 Lansdowne Drive/ Edmonton, AB/ Canada/ T6H 4L4
    #4 H. Jaehn/ 218 West Whitecroft/ 52310 Range Road 232/ Sherwood Park, AB/ Canada/ T8B 1C2
    #5 S. Dew/ P.O. Box 1584/Grand Cache, AB/ Canada/ T0E 0Y0
    #6 M. Anton/ #103, 10040-86 Avenue/Edmonton, AB/Canada/T6E 2L9

    4) Now put your address on the bottom of this list and remove the person from the top of the list. The address in the #6 position should now be in the #5 position and the #5 address should be in the #4 position and so on.
    5) Post the 3 questions and these instructions (with your address in the #6 position) to various newsgroups until you receive 10 letters that say you’ve been moved to the #5 position. When everyone prompts at least 10 other people to help make the world a better place, everyone receives more than $1,000,000 by Paying It Ahead. In the #6 position 10 people send you $1.00 each. Those 10 people will each prompt 10 more, and your address will move up in the lists. When you make it to the #1 position on people’s gift lists, you will be on 1,000,000 different gift lists. One hundred people give you a gift of $1.00 at #5, 1000 people gift you at #4, 10,000 people gift you at #3, 100,000 gift you at #2 and 1,000,000 people give you a gift of $1.00 each at the #1 position. Keep posting until 10 people have confirmed their act of kindness and moved you to the #5 position. The rest takes care of itself.
    6) Enjoy reading about all of the many different acts of kindness that you have inspired all over the world everyday and enjoy finding your mailbox filled with dollars and more dollars with these miraculous letters inside.
    Posting Directions

    1) CTRL A. Select All. Or put the cursor at the top of this page and drag it to the bottom.
    2) CTRL C. Or press Copy in the Edit Menu. Or copy this page into your computer.
    3) CTRL V. Or Paste. Open a new file (in Word) and click the cursor at the top and paste this article into that file.
    4) Edit the file. After you’ve done your random act of kindness; give a gift to the 6 people on the list, then move the addresses up one spot on the list. Remove the #1 address and add your address to the #6 (six) position. The #2 address should now be in the #1 position and the #3 address in the #2 position etc., on your new gift list.
    5) Visit message boards, on-line forums, newsgroups, chat sites and discussions then post your edited version of this article as a new message. Just highlight the text in the new file (that you made in step #4) with CTRL A, then CTRL C to copy and then just click on the message board and CTRL V to paste. You’re done with your first one. After you post a few, each posting should only take about 30 seconds. Keep posting until at least 10 people give you a gift of one dollar and confirmed that they have put you on their list in the #5 (five) position. You may also mail or e-mail this article to people you know. Have Fun. You are about to witness a Miracle!

    Wavesurgeon Doesn't Work with Turtle Beach!

    I've tried diligently to get Wavesurgeon to work with my TB soundcard and software (Pinnacle and Digital Orchestrator Pro). Wavesurgeon will gladly spit out a .pbf file - problem is, once I try to load it up, Pinnacle doesnt recognize this as a valid .pbf file and gives me an error (Error occured reading data [E-8]). The Pinnacle will gladly load other .pbf's, including other RAMBANKS using .wav samples so it looks like Wavesurgeon just isin't getting the format right.

    If anyone has any info to the contrary, I'd love to hear it...

    WaveSurgeon does work with Turtle Beaches, you just need a later version of the patch editor...

    This program is actually more flexible than the author makes out. Yes it is cool for breakbeats and so on, but it is also cool for ripping samples off CDs. Get a decent CD-ROM recorder program (CD Worx is the best I've found) and then load the output of that into Wave Surgeon, adjust the sensitivity, and you'll probably find quite a few usable samples.
