You should be able to open MIDI files in Finale. I can do so in
PrintMusic 2002.

Another possibility is to use a scanner and SmartScore - which preserves
the expression markings, while still converting to MIDI

have you, personally, had success with scanning anything other than
very simple scores? I find that by the time I've done correcting, I
might as well have entered the data manually.

classical midi sites.

Michael,
If you have Finale, you can import .mid files, of which there are thousands
out there.
Classical MIDI archives, try Harmony Central (sorry, I never remember
addresses, I end up Googling everything!)
Are you avoiding MIDI for some reason?
As a warning, if you're not familiar with it, most MIDI files are OK
sounding, many better than others, but in
many cases they won't print out or display without a little to a HUGE amount
of tweaking. MIDI files also
don't include dynamincs, tempo, articulation markings, etc. (you hear them,
but they don't show on screen). Many people even
intentionally put information in their MIDI files to prevent people from
importing them and printing them out
to protect their copyright and performance rights (like they use some wierd
time signature that makes it play correctly, but print out
in a mess!).
The same is true for printed music, even with Finale. If you're going to
print and distribute music, it either needs to be your own,
or out of copyright. If I sit here with Finale, and use an Alfred book I
bought, copy it in, and put it on the net, Alfred's going
to sue me! They own the copyright. This is why people make new "editions" of
older music - they use an old, out of copyright
source, and create their own edition. However, I knew a publisher who was
forced to change one of their editions before going
to press because it looked too much like another edition.
If you just want to listen, search for MIDI files.
If you want to see the music, expect MIDI files to import poorly most of the
time (unless all you want is the raw notes, and in that case
it might be useable). Another resource for printed music is PDF files. I've
found a number of Guitar pieces in PDF. Again, someone
had to put in a lot of work to compose, transcribe, or re-edit the piece,
and they don't want to just give that effort away. PDFs
are nice because they can provide a printed copy, but the user can't edit
it.
If you're looking for Finale files of classical music to open and edit
yourself, you may have to wait for people to become very
generous! Nonetheless, some others may offer good suggestions. My experience
with Finale Showcase is it was very hit and miss. Additionally
most are original compositions or arrangements (probably due to copyright
issues again) which I gather you're not looking for...

You know, I don't know of anyone who's putting Finale files out there. I
think the copyright issues are the problem. I mean, if I had a collection of
Fernando Sor pieces that I've input and edited in Finale, I wouldn't give
the disk to anyone because they could just open the file, print it, and try
to sell it. I wouldn't want people making money off all my hard work. I
think that's probably where most people stand on this.
Do you have that smart score thing ? I understand you can scan scores in and
then edit them at will. I understand the technology is getting better, but
you still have to do a lot of editing.
So you say collection - do you specifically mean Finale files? You can get
sheet music virtually anywhere, including the virtual world. There are
online sheet music sellers. But if you want Finale files specifically, I
think it's going to be a difficult search for you.
Maybe if you tell us more exactly what you're trying to do, we can offer
more suggestions.

I'm actually after scores in MusicXML format. In Finale there's
already a plugin to export and import from/to MusicXML. I know there's
a plugin for Siberlius too, but I'd like to avoid spending more,
however I wouldn't mind if there's a huge collection out there in
Siberlius format.
I need scores in MusicXML because I'm going to write a piece of
software to analyse music scores, and it appears to me MusicXML a
reasonable solution.

Oh, or making reductions - I think you can pick the two staves once
you've done what I said before and make like it's a piano reduction
and combine bothe parts to a single stave - but then I think you have
to do a lot of specifying about if you want layers or voices or not -
in the long run, my first post may be the easier way unless someon has
something else...

Oh, man, I've done it before.
Hmmm...
Copy everything to a second staff (or blank measure(s) after)
Use the Mass Edit tool and delete layer 2 from the original, and layer
1 from the copy.
Use the ME tool to switch layers in the 2nd staff (moving the notes to
layer 1).
Then, there's a way to copy and merge the data, rather than
overwriting it. It seems like this is in Mass Edit too, but there may
be a merge data command. I'm getting my programs confused.
There may be an even simpler way but in the old days, this is how I
seem to remember having to do it. Seems like everything's possible in
Finale, but somtimes you have to trick the program!
Sorry I couldn't be of more help - I'm sure someone will offer
suggestions!

This is very workaround-ish, but possible. Realize that this will only
work well if the two layers are homophonic (i.e. they have the same
rhythm). Here are the steps:
1. View > Show Active Layer Only
2. Choose the Staff Tool
3. Create a new staff below the staff you're altering (if the staff
you're altering is not the bottom staff, you can create two new staves,
copy the original music into the first new staff, perform the steps, and
then copy the result into the original staff)
4. Choose the Mass Edit tool (for version 2002 and earlier, this is the
Mass Mover tool)
5. Choose Layer 2
6. Select the section of layer 2 that you want melded into Layer 1
7. Copy into the new staff (or the second new staff if you created two
in step 3) by whatever method you choose
8. Clear the music selected in Step 6 (Clear on Mac, Backspace on Windows)
9. View > Show Active Layer Only (uncheck it)
10. Select the copied music on the new staff
11. Mass Edit > Move/Copy Layers...
12. Move Layer 2 into Layer 1 (You should now have the two original
layers on separate staves, both now in Layer 1)
13. Select the music on both staves that you want to combine
14. Mass Edit > Utilities > Implode Music, and choose Top Staff of Selection
15. Delete the staff you added
Viola! You now have one staff with both original layers in it, combined
into Layer 1.

Which is best for choir?
I direct a children's choir at church, but we have no qualified piano player and prerecorded accompainments are often too harsh or not available. I was looking for program(s) that would scan in sheet music and play it back with a natural feel and sound for performances. Is Finale overkill for what I need?
Finale use with MIDI
Can someone tell me how well Finale works for converting MIDI data into transcribed music score? Is it accurate and can it identify the key in which one is playing?

hey people, i just got finale 2003, and i was in the middle of making a song, but then halfway through , i find that i can't do more than two pages and two bars! how do you extend it? it's automatically a double barline, and it's frustrating!

select the measure tool (looks like a single bar with a whole rest), and a measure menu will appear in the menu bar. click "measure", and then select "add". a dialog box will appear, allowing you to add however many measures you want to the end of the piece. you can always delete extra measures later.
