Software Description

Groove Mechanic is a noise reduction system optimized for repairing the sound from vinyl LP records and cassette tapes. It removes clicks and pops such as those found on vinyl records, removes tape hiss and reduces rumble (subaudio frequencies). Use it to regain the original sound quality from records and tapes that have deteriorated over the years.

You can use it to record the sound from your turntable or tape deck, remove clicks, hiss and rumble, normalize the amplitude, and split the resulting file into individual tracks. You can also convert the tracks to MP3 or OGG format.

New in v2.6:

  • Added the often-requested "recording-pause" feature.
  • Removed an error message that occurred when run under Windows Vista.

Grooove Mechanic upgrade for Windows 7

I have had Groove Mechanic since Windows 98. I replaced my Gatway with a Dell in Mar.09. It had Windows Vista. I purchessed Groove Mechanic again. I have been very satisfied with G.M.,but it will not work with Windows 7. I would be happy to pay again, if you have a vesion that is compatible with Windows 7. HELP! I miss my Groove Mechanic.

Have you tried to install

Have you tried to install and run it?

The reason I ask is that even though it's only listed as working on XP and Vista and not 7, a lot of XP software will still work on Windows 7

It was a waste of time

This particular software did nothing except waste my time.

How many clicks and pops?

For a vinyl album in decent shape, what would be the "normal" amount of clicks and pops found and repaired? I realize that this will depend on the shape of the album, but when I run Groove Mechanic on a file, it is detecting as many as 3 to 8 Thousand on a single .wav file, which seems extremely high to me. This apparently is related to the "artifact" problem previously described. I have no idea why these problems are happening, and my efforts to solve them have not worked until now. Help would be greatly appreciated -

P.A.B.

High Peak artifacts added to wave file -

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced this problem, and if so, what if any cause was found, and how it was corrected.

I record a file from a vinyl album in decent but not perfect shape. I run groove mechanic over the file, and artifacts are created which cause peaks in the music that greatly exceeds the average amplitude of the file. When played, these artifacts are NOT audible, but unless I manually go into the file and reduce the amplitude, I cannot normalize the file to anything near 0db, because the peaks are brought to 0db, but the remainder of the file - the average music level - is not.

I have sent files to Norm at Coyote, and he says that the original files contain a high amount of high frequency content, which is contributing to the problem, but I am an experienced listener, and althought the album tracks contain clicks and pops, the source material sounds pretty good to me - I honestly don't see this as the problem.

My base record level is usually set to about 80% (.8 of the 0db level) so I should not be "overdriving the sound card". I do notice that when I lower the initial record level to a max amplitude of 50% the problem is greatly reduced, but not eliminated. I would rather record at a higher initial level than that, as the final .wav file result seem to be best at this level.

I use:
An Ortofon cartridge - about two years old but not used much since purchased, other than when transfering vinyl to CD.
A Technics SL-3300 direct drive turntable.
An RCA solid state stereo amp purchased last year.
Gold connections to the computer.
A Creative Soundblaster sound card.

Has anyone out there had or seen this problem before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated -
P.A.B.

SL-3300 Cartridge Needle Question

Can't help you with your question, but I see we have the SL-3300 in common. Where are you buying needles for this unit? I've recently put mine back into service to record lps from my collection to cd...but the needle is in horrible condition. I can't do a thing without a new one, and don't have a clue where to look.

Thanks, if you can help.

Re: SL-3300 Cartridge Needle Question

i can´t help you neither. But i have same problem about getting a needle for this unit. Anybody knows where to get one?

Re: Bullshit prog is crap , too many bugs that should not have t

Would you care to elaborate? Using noise reduction is not trivial, unfortunately, so often people do have some initial problems. However, if you would let me know what kind of problem(s) you are having I'm sure we can resolve it for you.

I'm sure this approach will work out better than just posting a message "it's crap", without giving any reasons or justification!

Thanks,
Norm

I'd really like to know what you're using. All I want to do it turn one measley tape into a CD for my boyfriend for Xmas. I copied the thing and it's got nothing but hiss and fuzz on the CD. Can you help if you know of something better than this?

So near and yet so far

I have some audio cassettes with focus group recordings on them: central to my MA research. However, they are largely inaudible (hiss, voices too quiet) because I took no care in selecting and positioning the Walkmans when conducting the focus groups.

Is this 'Groove Mechanic' likely to help me? If so, what does downloading it involve? I've never really used computers before and so might be just a touch out of my depth.

I fear the worst - who will tell me it ain't so?

Re: So near and yet so far

Yes, Groove Mechanic can probably do what you need. It will remove up to about 25 dB of hiss, and can greatly improve the audibility of the music or voices. You can download an evaluation version from www.coyotes.bc.ca, and if you need any assistance please contact me at info@coyotes.bc.ca. Thanks.

Reloading on a new computer

I would like to to move Grove Mechanic from my old Windows 98 machine to my new XP machine. How do I do that. What do I need to do to upgrade from 2.3.

Pluses + Minuses

Groove Mechanic does what I think is a better than average job of cleaning up Vinyl recordings for us low-budget people (meaning those of us without super-computers and software that makes an Ezio Penza 78 sound track like it was recorded yesterday on as digital track).
Unfortunately it seems to have one really irritating flaw. Saving the files, which support seems to imply is effortless an unneccesary as Groove Mechanic takes care of this, but not so! I can't tell you the number of times that I've finished one process successfully and then had to shutdown my computer to give it (or me!) a break. Afterwards, I find that not only the the original file, but the saved file, seem to be non-existant!
Let's face it... The analysis and elimination of clicks, than hiss, etc, on a well used vinyl disk can take a long time. If your software cannot ve counted on or even trusted to save that work when you ask it to initiate such a simple command, even the saintly may find themselves in at least a major fit of rage. And unlike practically any other software I have ever used, this is a consistent problem with Groove Mechanic.
The support reply was fast but their answer regarding this saving problem was no answer for me. It only allowed me to confirm on further use of this software that while Groove Mechanic may do the specialized tasks which you might want it to do, the most basic it can almost be counted on NOT to do. Listen FAST! Woops! Alas.. My well cleaned audio file. I loved her well, but how fast she disappeared from my hard drive. A fleeting glance of what could be... If only Groove Mechanic could manage to save a file when asked to. It's like the fish that got away. Must have been 6 foot tall!

Re: Pluses + Minuses

Giving more thought to my comments regarding Groove Mechanic I decided that I should follow up on my original comments, and this is why:

It is absolutely true that as is, Groove Mechanic has a sort of bug in the way that it saves files, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO MANUALLY SAVE FILES. This is a serious and stupid problem that the authors should solve, and that no one should have to put up with.

Nevertheless, having compared it to a few other programs, there is no doubt about it... Groove Mechanic has the capabilities of dealing with the lesser levels of pops and clicks much better than those programs, and much faster. It is much less of a resource hog, this speaks very well of the designers and their approach to writing the software. I would take a wild guess and suppose that this might explain where they got lost in the writing of the save function which Groove Mechanic has, and truly from that one aspect Groove Mechanic should come with a strict warning to avoid manually saving files. I don't think that that is an acceptable solution, but I do think that they are on their way to offering a superior software that should not be overlooked. If other people out there on lower budgets have been seriously looking at software to cleanup the noise found on LPs and Taped LPs, I would suggest that they do not overlook a trial run with Groove Mechanic, but they should be prepared to deal with this bug. And the authors of Groove Mechanic should find a way to get rid of it.

If you are attempting to clean up LPs and associated noise in a very acceptable fashion, you will soon see that this is not an easy task and that you will need more than one set of tools (and a lot of time and patience on your hands) to do it. Groove Mechanic could very likely make up a very useful part of this setup and you may find the results much more pleasing than with other software which you have sampled. For nnow, just watch out for the saving bug!

System always freezes with 2.4b

My system freezes every time I try to record a track. I've got an AMD 1.4 Ghz processor, an Asus A7V 266 motherboard, 512 Mhz of DDR memory, a 40 gig hard drive, a Philips Acoustic Edge sound card, and Windows ME. I shut down all programs except for Explorer and Systray. I've had the computer into the shop twice, and they assure me all the hardware's working properly. I've had many hours of frustration and difficulty over the last few weeks. I'm still trying to record my first record. Can anyone help me with this?

THANX!!! ;-)

trying to buy!!

I downloaded the trial software and like it. For the past two hours I've been trying, without success, to register for the full version. I go to the secure web site and am asked for credit card info and then advised that I've ordered a copy to be SHIPPED to me (which I obviously don't want or need, since I already have a copy that is all but registered). Then I try to do the reg via e-mail and the address is wrong (the entire web site for this software seems to be moved??)

so - hello, is anyone there, and can I register quickly and start using this, or shall I look into other programs??
Thanks, Jane Alev

Using MD as an intermediate between LP and CD

Any problem with doing that? My stereo is in the other end of the house. I plan to record on MiniDisc then transfer to sound card via a portable MD player. I wouldn't expect any sound degradation from MD to CD.

I Like Your Support

I have not decided to do anything yet, I am just looking around, this is my first night at this, but I like your
support. Thanks for being there for us.

RECORDER

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO COPY SOME OLD CASSETTES, SO THAT I CAN BURN THEM ONTO CD'S, BUT ALL COPYS ARE IN DOUBLE TIME AND UNRECOGNIZABLE. WHAT IS GOING ON?

CAN THE YAMAHA RECORDER BE RESET TO NORMAL SPEED?

Re: How many times to remove all clicks & Pops?

It depends a lot on just how bad the LP was. Often it is necessary to do 2 or 3 repetitions, but there's rarely any advantage to going more than that. At that point usually any clicks that are left are inaudible.

: I was wondering just how many times you need to put your wave file into the remove pops and clicks feature? I put a wave through once and it did the analyzing and said I had say 345 found, I removed them but when I tried to do it a second time, it said I still had 115? Is there some that won't ever be removed?

Don't know, but 2.4a is available at www.coyotes.bc.ca, and it's better than 2.2 in every way.

Re: Why don't the "fixed" files play?

You don't need to save the file explicitly. When you open the input file, you get asked for a save file name. Specify the name there. Then do the analyze and repair. That's it. The file is already saved. If you attempt to save it by some other means (eg. Capture - Select Save File) you will overwrite your good file with a blank file.

: When I record, fix and save, I get a Wav file of the original name with "Fixed" after it. Fine. But it doesn't work! Attempts to play it either result in error messages about the file being corrupted, about it lacking header detail or a complete computer crash.
: Not a lot of use! Anything I can do about IT?

How do I get started?

O.K. how do I hook everything up to transfer a lp recording to a digital file?

Re: How do I get started?

To get the LPs into the computer, you need:
- a turntable :)
- a stereo or something with a phono preamp (eg. home stereo)
- a sound card in the computer
- a cable to connect the stereo to the sound card.

Connect the Tape Out jacks (usually 2 RCA jacks) to the sound card's Line In (usually a 1/8" stereo jack) using an adapter cable (commonly available in Radio Shack for a couple of bucks).

Play the record, and turn the stereo's selector to Phono. Start the Windows Volume Control application (eg. from Groove Mechanic's File menu), select Options, Properties, Recording, OK.

Adjust the volume level with the Line In slider.

There are more details in the online helpfile. Any further questions, just let me know.

Where do I find filtering theory info

Post recording clean-up

I recorded ~100 minutes of music from a cassette tape. I didn't have time to remove hiss, rumble & clicks at that time so I just saved the .wav file. Later I removed the hiss rumble & clicks and saved the fixed file. Now it won't play because it's not a .wav file. What did I do wrong?

Re: Post recording clean-up

Please try using this Software, Direct real-time Audio Recorder w/ NR. This software will convert or record real-time stereo audio at CD quality directly to MP3 or WMA with Hiss removal. No more converting. Just plug an audio source into the sound card, record (with Noise Reduction) and have a ready-to-play MP3 or WMA when you're finished. The real-time Noise Reduction Block very nicely removes cassette tape hiss so that old cassettes can be cleaned up easily and brought closer to CD quality. The software will also clean WAV, MP3 or WMA files directly.Has Automatic Song detection to split tracks and Silence detector to eliminate silence. Also provides a "wide" stereo spatial effect which enhances the audio causing the listener to feel more like they are surrounded by the sound. Now has recording timer. Includes ID3 Tag editor.Download it at http://www.lapsaudio.com/download/LAPSrecorder.exe

Re: Post recording clean-up

Sometimes that happens to me too..Every now and then the saved "fixed" file saves as a non-wave file..I usually restart the prgram and do it over again..But since yours is 100 min. long and probably took a long time to process--you might want to go into file properties and see if you can rename the file extension as a wave file..

Re: how to register?

When you start the unregistered version, answer "yes" to the prompt "register now?". You will see a 9-character system tag. E-mail that to Coyote Electronics (at my e-mail address above) and you will get a key by return e-mail.

Re: How about digitizng old music!!!

: Hey, this is an old post, but guys, you've been conned. Have you ever religiously played a CD? After a while it will get scratched, it will get a nice laser groove burned into it, and it will not last for a thousand years. Just count all the CD's you have that are scratched beyond repair. Hell, I take great care of my CD's, but sometimes the surface is so delicate I still get scratches. And I thought you guys already knew that DATS are of a higher sound quality and fidelity. I can't remember the bit rate, but it is of a higher quality, but then again, like reel to reel masters, you wouldn't want the public getting their hands on a master copy of a recording. Still, I think their is an argument that certain recording mediums should be exclusively for those that are professional recording engineers, and those that wish to pursue the craft of recording.
