Software Description

Groove Mechanic is a noise reduction system optimized for repairing the sound from vinyl LP records and cassette tapes. It removes clicks and pops such as those found on vinyl records, removes tape hiss and reduces rumble (subaudio frequencies). Use it to regain the original sound quality from records and tapes that have deteriorated over the years.

You can use it to record the sound from your turntable or tape deck, remove clicks, hiss and rumble, normalize the amplitude, and split the resulting file into individual tracks. You can also convert the tracks to MP3 or OGG format.

Re: Analog sucks!!!

I figured I would add to this.
I agree that albums in good condition on good equipment sound better than CDs. Partly because CDs are mixed differently (harshly?) and partly because the mechanics of a turntable, even a good one, tend to "muddy" the sound, making it sound fuller and warmer.
When converting an analog signal to digital the sampling rate must be at least twice the highest frequency being sampled. However, to get a reasonably accurate reproduction a sampling rate of three to five times the highest frequency is needed. Digital playback equipment gets around this by artificially rounding the analog signal. There is also a valid argument about how much of an effect higher frequency harmonics have on coloring analog sound, even if those harmonics are above the threshold of the human ear. A 44 KHz sampling rate doesn't come close to picking those up.
Speaking of the human ear, I recently read that by age thirty the average person can only hear up to 13 - 14 KHz. Since I'm over thirty I figure all those higher frequencies are a wash with me anyway.
I'm starting to record all my old albums to CD for a few reasons. I don't have to flip it over every 22 minutes to hear the whole thing, turntables will be getting harder to find, and I have some very obscure music. A lot of what I have is impossible to find on any media anymore. By copying it to CD I can keep the original in better shape.

Re: Analog sucks!!!

: Analog sucks, why do you think they make progs to fix
: analogs sh.t sound?
Believe it or not vynyl records actually have a higher fidelity than CDS i.e. they are truer to the original sound. This is because real life sound is analog. When music is recorded digitally the analog wave form is analyzed and the audio levels are recorded at a set interval. For CDs the sampling rate is 44.1kHz. So the audio level is measured 44,100 times per second. So the resulting file is essentially a bunch of points not an entire wave form. When the song is played back the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) "guesses" to fill in the gaps between these points. LP records do not have this problem because they do not have samples just continuous grooves which cause a needle to vibrate. Because of this, LPs are truer to the original sound.

Re: Analog sucks!!!

Colin must be a young un'. Only the brain power of youth would casually dismiss reality for the harsh digital realm.

Re: Analog sucks!!!

Analog sound sure beats the hell out of the nasally, harsh highs of digital sound

Re: Analog sucks!!!

: Analog sucks, why do you think they make progs to fix

Analog sound is similar to the secret of the Universe...
just because you don't understand it, doesn't mean
that it's stupid or unimportant. If you don't like
records, then DON'T LISTEN TO THEM! But don't you
think that there's more to it than you may know?

Re: How about digitizng old music!!!

Dear Colin:
I have some old Arabic music and wish to digitize it. They are on cassttes and Lp's. I am grateful for anyone who offers a utility to clean the hiss, clicks and noise.

Re: How about digitizng old music!!!

I think Aladin has a point, I myself coverted some old tapes to cd because it's NOT available !!
But I still think that lp's sound better(besides the scratches and pops)

Re: How about digitizng old music!!!

The only reason digital exsists is because it saves manufactures huge amounts of money and time. Because every living human wants something that does everything that fits in the palm of their hand. Imagine how much money they save by shipping stuff that weighs a tenth of what it used to. Digital may have less backgound noise but digital definitely does'nt "sound" any better than analog. It's funny that its always trying to prove itself in the face of analog sound though. So why not just build evrything analog? Because you woud'nt be able to afford it... Plus nobody could lift it. Beside that... Please keep purchasing -costs a fortune today and worthless tomorrow - technology. I'll take the analog stuff you wrote off as worthless.....

"Besides the scratches and pops"

Ah! And that's just the point, isn't it!

I have been listening to CDs now for some years, but have about 400 vinyls from which I have recently decided to try capture my favourite tracks on to CDs. Listening to them again, I am *appalled* at the amount of noise in them, much of which requires painstaking manual removal using digital editing programs, because I have yet to find a program that I feel I can trust to automate the process.

It's not just that CDs are more convenient, they are also more durable. I lost count of the number of new vinyls which had heartbreaking accidents, and sod's law always dictated that the resulting ditches and ramparts always ended up on my favourite tracks. It might *just* be possible to claim that a brand-new vinyl on a very expensive brand-new deck (costing £n000s) equipped with a brand-new stylus (costing £n00s) sounds as good as a CD on a deck costing about £500 or so, but after a year in the average household played on the average record deck there really is no comparison between a vinyl and a CD!

What has been said in this thread about CDs being a series of discrete samples while old analogue recordings are a continuous wave is true. However, the absolute upper limit of human hearing is about 25KHz, and very few people can hear that high - I tested my range when I was 17, and could hear 23KHz, but just a few years later at 24 I could only hear up to about 17KHz; (how much of this deterioration was due to natural ageing and how much to a then liking for heavy metal is open to debate, but just to be safe, I turned the volume down). The CD sample rate of 44KHz is adequate to recreate accurately a wave form of with an upper limit of 22KHz. Add to this the fact that the highest transients in music are so faint that they are drowned by the various sources of noise in analog recordings such as hiss from the master tapes, stray magnetic fields affecting the cartridge, and the noise of the stylus in the groove, and you can see why I take the claims of vinyl die-hards with a pinch of salt ...

In fact, CDs are perfectly capable of conveying that 'warm' analogue sound, it's just that the people making them choose not to do so. In other words, CDs may have acquired a bad name with some because:

1) Tastes in music change, and that includes the sound balance. The advent first of disco and then of club and dance music, as well as the influence of genres of such as rap, have led to a modern taste in sound which to my ears is bass heavy and artificially aggressive. I find my ears tire of this sort of music much more quickly than they do when I listen to something which has a well-balanced sound. Further, because modern sound engineers are used to this sound, if called upon to restore analog recordings, they tend to try to recreate it from them, hence ...

2) When being prepared for CD, instead of merely being sampled digitally, many analog recordings originally released on vinyl have been digitally treated, resulting in the afore-mentioned unbalanced sound. As an example of this try comparing those Fleetwood Mac tracks which are on both their Greatest Hits CD and the Rumours CD. I think you will agree that those on the Greatest Hits CD have an authentic balanced sound and compare favourably with the original vinyl, whereas those on the Rumours CD sound muffled/bass heavy/lacking in transients and do not.

Nope, give me CDs any day. I shall be a happy man when I've finished transferring my vinyls, assuming I manage to do so before I die! I hopefully will have achieved relatively quiet and noise-free transfers (after all, that's what's taking the time), I won't have to lug around all that weight when moving house, I won't have to buy new styli at £n00s a time, I won't be ruining any irreplaceable old recordings through just simply listening to them!

So, now the point of all this, does anybody know of a program that I can trust to remove all the noise and still leave me with an authentic sound? I've tried DartPro, DC-Art, and Ray-Gun, and none of them really measure up. Please mail me at Charles_Harrison@compuserve.com if you feel you have useful advice.

Thanks.

I wanted to know how to get the programs for tranfering digitally to my computer. I could then put them on winamp and listen to them while I work

lps

thank you for having groove mech. i belive that lp records will eventualy replace cds. everything will be on lp and nothing on cd in the futre. no, im not crazy.

Re: lps

He's right. Think anout it. Digital media to imitate analog sounds? Nope. Only analog can imitate analog faithfully!

Re: lps

: thank you for having groove mech. i belive that lp records will eventualy replace cds. everything will be on lp and nothing on cd in the futre. no, im not crazy.

Please Explain - otherwise we will all think you're crazy :)

No, they're both lunatics. Go back to analog LP's? Right. After a few months of use, the record is damaged, has pops and clicks. So you buy a DIGITAL de-clicker, but now you have to listen to it on your PC. EERRR! No longer analog.

Everything is digital. YOu may like analog, but the economics of it are long gone. MP3 and RA are taking over. YOu will not even know what the format is anymore after a few years. All you'll do is visit an online music library, input your online purse number, and listen to any song ever recorded (older stuff having to have been digitized) for mere pennies per track.

Think about it. It makes perfect sense. The companies can distribute the music more effectively, the artists can be paid more accurately, and the consumer doesn't have to rummage in a store if he/she doesn't want to. Some online tracks will be free, so not everything will have to be paid for.

Eventually our walkmen will be on the net, and play your favorite tracks all day. No local storage.

Analog may sound better, but it'll never be back as new.
