CD-G

Is there any software that will play CD-G/Karaoke records (with the text being displayed on the screen)
on a PC, shareware, freeware or for sale

Mini Disc format

[The body of this post has been reconstituted from replies so it may differ from what was originally written.]

Three questions:
1. Can anyone tell me the difference (if any) between the format used for Mini Discs and CD-A?
2. IS there any software that will allow vinyl tracks recorded to disk that can be 'de-noised' without loosing too much effect.
3. Is there any way at all of creating an on disc decoder as track 1 read from the root header that will allow mp3 files to be read and played on a CD-A player. I know the answer is no but maybe someone can think on this at least.

Mini Disc format

Answer One:(MiniDisc)
MO Recording
MiniDisc equipments record audio data onto discs using MO technology Magneto Optical. The process involves laser headheating up the recording spot while the recording headuses positive and negative magnetic signals to write audio data paterns. As the disc moves away,
new spots are recorded by the magnetic recording head, while the already recorded spots cool down retaining the magnetic signals. All these complicated processes require no physical contacts between the laser/recording heads and the disc itself.
The disc does not wear out even with repeating writings. With that, the MiniDiscs can be recorded up to at least 1 million times or more. Only time can prove this statement.
Just like a computer's hard drive, the audio data is recorded in fragments and scattered (efficiently by the recorder) inside the disc for fast retrievals and editing. The recording method is called Non-Linear recording, differing from tape's Linear recording in which the audio data is recorded sequentially.
With the MO technology tracks can be divided, combined, deleted, and moved within the disc.
Other information such as recorded time, disc name, and track title can also be stored and edited.

ATRAC Compression
Unlike Compact Discs, in which the audio data is stored without compression, MiniDiscs use ATRAC technology-Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding to compress
audio data in 1:5 ratio. As a result, it can to record as much as a CD (74 min stereo / 148 min mono) or more (80 min discs are now available) with the same sampling frequency (44.1 kHz) in a much smaller disc. The advantage of ATRAC, however, is that the compression method
incorperates a noise reduction system that eliminates noises and inaudible frequencies and only records data audible to human ears. The Sampling Rate Convertors inside the MiniDisc recorders automatically convert 48 and 32 kHz frequencies to 44.1 kHz
during recording to ensure the best quality of sound.

CD-A or CD-DA to MiniDisc recording, is a fine line. MiniDisc although has more to offer and "IS" the future evolution of musical editing. Gone are the day's of my 8-Track, soon to be CD-A App's as well.
To envoke even more fear into your heart, now there is DVD-A Or DVD-Audio and Super Audio Compact Disc (SACD) With Both formats targeting sonic perfectionists with using high resolution, increasing the dynamic and frequency ranges.
The SCAD uses a 1-bit system that encodes an input signal at 2,822,400 samples per second (or 2,882.4kHz)While DVD-A improves on what the CD approach was with Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) encoding. Which i think DVD-A is still round the regular 44.1kHz...but i could be wrong.

Answer Two:
There is numerous software out there for "de-noising" of tracks. It all depends on personal preference and application purposes. For instance running a track through a sequencer applying a "his hum removal" might due for one track yet a auto-calibrated frequency gate for nasty fluctuations in record "pop's" might be necessary. I suggest picking up a copy of the magazine "Computer Music" to fully explore your avenues and to discover the full dynamics of what you want in regards to "de-noising" for there's a vast sea of products out there.

Answer Three:
Mp3 and CD-A's Both run at the same kHz (or should) if not try altering the SPS's.
I know there is an answer for this, i;ve read it somewhere.
Do you want this to occur simultaneously? Otherwize i think you might have to play areound with the current file formats....
Sorry....
Cheers

Recording from tapes

[The body of this post has been reconstituted from replies so it may differ from what was originally written.]

I have a lot of old LP's that I wouyld like to tape from so that I can then put them on the computer and burn onto CDs.
Not knowing anything about it I would appreciate it if someone out there could tell me what software I need and how to do it.

same question...comp drive vs stand alone units, etc, are cd's rewritable and if so how many times, can a "compilation" cd be put together from numerous different audio tape sources as you go along over time, adding new songs to the cd at the end of the last one you recorded and are these "searchable" from a tape (or even a cd) source, what would you reccomend for someone who just wants to put all his rare taped material onto non degradable cds and not pay a lot to do it
