Recording from stereo to pc

i recently got a cd-writer & know i can record from cd to cd. what i'm looking for is software &/or equipment to record from my stereo (particularly vinyl, as i spin a lot) to my pc (to make demo cd's). any tips/recommendations? thanks!

Re: Recording from stereo to pc

Soundforge is what you're looking for, but of course it's not cheap. However, windows has it's own audio recorder hidden away under multimedia, so you can record the songs (as WAVs) and play them back....but not much else. Depends what you actually want to DO with the deigi files, really

Re: Convert *.mid to *.wav

just in case you get a reply, could you let me know, i really need to change some midi files i downloaded off the net to wav files
thanx

This is how!!!

You'll need to record the midi while it is playing using either the Sound Recorder that comes with Windows, or an external utility such as CoolEdit. The exact procedure depends on your system, but typically it goes something like this:

Open NWC (if recording an NWC file) or Media Player (if recording a straight .mid file), and load your file. Size the window so you can also open Sound Recorder or CoolEdit, etc. Go to the midi window (NWC or Media Player) and start the midi. Go to the recorder window and click record so you can set the recording level (using the mixer utility that came with your sound card). Stop playing once set, hit Record again (discarding the old recording) and start the midi playing.

You'll usually be given choices for sound quality; higher quality means larger files. The best quality is with 44,100 Hertz sampling rate, stereo.

The font drivers don't get loaded for some reason you have to copy the three fonts in the musictime directory into you fonts directory in windows, It will then run ok

Do you still have Atari?
If you do, it`s easy:
- format FDD on PC to 720 Kb (put plastic tape
on that square hole on the right side - not to
one for write protection! and format in Win95)
- Atari reads 720Kb PC formatted disks: just put
FD into the ATARI drive and copy midi or Cubase
files.
- Copy this onto PC Hard disk and use it!

Hope this helped....

Buying computer system to support music software

I need HELP!!
What l am wanting to do it create a work station which
will be capable of running two synths, a four track,
and eventually a drum machine. However l have no idea
as to what type of set up l should be looking at.
In short l want to produce tech, so l need advice on
what type of software and hardware l should be getting.

Long response...

I have been really happy with my setup...I have
worked through a couple of slight glitches, and
now I have it all working perfectly. I have a
Windows95 machine with Cakewalk Pro Audio 6.01,
and a large hard drive (5.2GB) dedicated to audio.
The computer is a 200Mhz Pentium with 64MB of RAM.
My other hardware consists of a GINA multi-channel
sound card (2 inputs, 8 outputs, digital I/O). If
I had it to do over, I would get the LAYLA, which
is a souped-up version of the GINA. These cards
are made by Echo Technologies. I also have a Mackie
1202VLZ board...very flexible, and has great sounding
mic preamps. Having the board really makes the
setup flexible. I also have a standard 16-bit
Creative Labs sound card in my machine to handle the
midi. Cakewalk will let you easily sync digital audio
tracks with your midi tracks, and also has all the
effects built in, so you don't have to buy a bunch
of expensive outboard processors. Basically, I build
a mix one track at a time, with or without a midi
sequence. Then I add effects, edit the mix, and
mix it down to 2 available tracks (Cakewalk has 256
available tracks in each composition). From there,
I output as a stereo WAV file, and burn it to CD
using my CDR and Adaptec EasyCD creator. It's great,
and all digital. Hope this helps. BTW, DO NOT
skimp on your computer hardware. My setup is slightly
limited by my actual computer; if I were starting
over, I would get a Pentium 2 350Mhz at least, with
128MB of RAM and perhaps a 10GB hard drive. Oh,
one more thing. I use my CD writer to archive my
multi-track originals. Then I delete them from hard
disk to free up space.

another long response...

Very good answer from Fiona. I'll add my two pennorth by sort of summarising and it may help a little:
Get the best computer you can, with as much memory as you can. Audio recording and processing effects takes it out of your CPU.
Get the fastest hard drive you can. A big one would obviously be best but it's not essential, it's just a pain when it starts to fill up. There ARE those who advocate 2 drives....one for all your windows based progs, and one solely for audio.... again replaying 5 minuted dance tunes with 10 audio track works your hard drive, and if it fails, there goes everything else.....again this is not essential and could easily be added when the (inevitable) second wave of spending takes place.
Get a good sound card, designed to record audio. I have the GINA too and it's really good... the Layla is better but obviously more expensive. Unfortunately there are lots of good ones and getting sensible advice is difficult, but if you look up so-called I/O cards at all the music sites like the synthzone, harmony central, you should be able to find one for your budget. Bottom line is that the perfect all-round sound card doesn't exist yet so you'll need one for audio and another for midi, like Fiona (I gave up on my SB clone and bought an OPCODE midi card, twice as many midi channels, very useful for multiple synths....but that means I lose my joystick...o well)
So really only 3 important areas: CPU/memory.... fast hard drive....."pro" sound card....

The most important thing to do is not to rush into it, spend the next coupla weeks on the web with your budget written in front of you and you should get something really good.

Oh, of course this all assumes that you want to take the PC option (which inevitably leads to Cakewalk). I've got a good PC system now, but in all honesty I always wished I'd started with a Mac. They work better, are more reliable, Cubase VST works on them etc. But they cost a lot more money to buy/run. Maybe the days of Mac superiority are almost over, but not quite yet.

Need conversion utility for WAV -> CD -DA

I have used Adaptec cd creator to get songs off LP (Record) and are now stored as Wav files. In order to hear these files in a cd player I need to convert these to cdda (cd - digital audio) format. If someone can guide me where to find such program, I will really appreciate it. Thanks in advance

Re: Need conversion utility for WAV -> CD -DA

Try using GEAR Audio (http://www.gearsoftware.com/).

It translates 44.1 16 BIT 2 channel WAV files to CD-DA.

Note: WAV files that are not 44.1 16 BIT are not Red Book Audio file
format conforment. Gear Audio will not link WAV files that are not
not Red Book conforment. Adaptec CD creator gives you the impression
the user can write other audio sample rates
to Red Book by re-sampling the data and generating 44.1 data prior to
creating the Red Book file. Both programs are good, it really depends
on the user's restrictions and reguirements for data translation.

Simply use Adaptec's cd creator! This is what it's made for isn't it. (I use it anyway)

: I downloaded a shareware product which converts .mp3's to .wav files and then used adaptec's cd creator to make my own cd's out of the tunes of my choice. The shareware product, called goldwave, can convert .mp3's into a variety of formats,,,, mp3 -to- midi, .wav, and a whole lot more. You can find it at

http://www.goldwave.com

and download it from there.
