anyone here who tried the progs "total recorder" or
"renovator" ?
I installed them yesterday and they were working
alright. but now I can't start soundforge anymore.
even re-installing didn't help.
seems as if one of those progs made some changes in
several DLLs.

anyone got an idea how to fix that problem?

Don't know if this helps, by I had all three running on my system w/o any problems. I would guess that they were installed (over a period of time) in this order

1. SF
2 TR
3. reno

I took a quick look and I can't see what TR could've changed to injure SF, BUT.......

TR switches your default SC to it's own drivers.

This can cause all kinds of problems and I wouldn't be surprised if this could cause SF to hang on you.

Try resetting your SC properties back, and see if that helps.

I can't imagine ReNovator effecting anything.

I have a question to ask you, guys. This Cubase is very new to me, and I don't know how to record a guitar on it. I keep trying, but when I want to play the part that I "created", I hear nothing. I am using Soundblaster Live Value soundcard. I wonder if there is a problem with that ( maybe it's not set up properly).
Anyways, I would very appreciate your help. Detailed instructions would be so cool.

how did you connect your guitar to the SB-live?
(a guitar has to be pre-amplified)

enter the SB-live setup and check if
- line-IN record is activated
- wave-volume is turned up
- master out is turned up

start cubase and check
- if audio-section is activated
- the channel-volume on the audio-monitors
- that the channel isn't muted

which version of cubase do you use?
and do you work with a mac or pc?

Help on Freefilter needed

Could anybody tell me how to use Freefilter(direct-x)in Wavelab,because I don't know how to make a new wav file with the Freefilter recorded on it!
In the Mastersection of Wavelab I know how to set Freefilter(learn source/learn dest/match)but when I want to apply it to make a processed wav,it doesn't work!
Please help!

finding dj type audio editor

Help!!!!! I need help in finding a good audio editor
which will help me make mastermix cd's.
Must have ability to cut wave file and save the parts
in separate files so that i can burn each part as a
separate track but have the mix continue by setting gap
time to zero......you know ala mtv party cd,s.

there are several good audio editors out there but i use cool edit pro. it's multitrack studio is excellent. as for burning tracks together you must use disc at once option in your burning software an set gap to zero.

The Horror of Hiss

I recently purchased "Wavelab" and "Clean" from
Steinberg. I'm trying to digitally remaster some
old demo tapes that are laden with tape hiss. I've been
able to add punch with EQ and Compression, but i can't
eliminate the hiss buried in the tracks. Can anyone
tell my what frequencies are most affected by hiss so
I can try eliminating it with the Parametric EQ in
Wavelab. If you have other suggestions, I'd like to hear them,as well!!!

as mike mentioned it's very hard to remove such
hiss-sounds without changing the sound...

I think such noise has frequencies from about
2 KHz upwards.

if you don't mind spending more money get the
noise-reduction plug-in from sonic-foundry.

but I'd try the plug-ins mentioned by mike first.

I think from my own experience, that the best way
to reduce unwanted noise is to use Direct X
plug ins like Denoiser from Steinberg or noise
reduction plug in 2.0 from Sonicfoundry (manufacturer
of Sound Forge).
Wavelab is Direct X compatible so you can use any Direct X plug in from within the Wavelab.
I can also suggest DATR pro98 software or Sound Laundry
that can do pretty good job.
Eq I am afraid can not give satisfactory results.

cool edit pro seems to work well for me. but you must use its multipass function which takes a bit longer but well worth it.

The problem with tape hiss is that once you've got it
it's really hard to remove without altering the sound
noticibly.

One thing you could try is to download some of the
noise removal programs on this site such as <ul>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/groovmec_win95/">Groove Mechanic</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Audio_Tools/">Audiotools</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/WAVclean/">WAVclean</a>
</ul>

You can find more of these types of programs and plug-ins at

They all have differing side effects such as harmonic distortion so
it's probably best to try a few of them and see which ones work best
for your tapes.

how do i mix down midi in cakewalk 8?

hi, thanks for reading this. i want to mix down songs from cakewalk into wave files that hold all the audio and midi data. when i use the mixdown audio function only the audio tracks are heard in the wave file. how can i mix down tracks so that the midi sounds are heard in a final wave file?

Midi tracks are not audio. They are inaudible midi signals converted to audio via some sort of synth. Record the line out of the synth whether it's an inbord card or an outboard sound module to a new track(s) and then mixdown audio.

Fuity Tracks will allow you to mix mp3s with wavs. I'm not sure what you are looking to do, though.

A mixer prog (like VTT) would be more flexable if you are looking to make a mix of, let's say, a song on mp3 and a sample wav.

For any serious mixing, working with wavs will allow you more options.

For "on the fly" applications, mp3s would be fine.

Is there a CD looper for Mac? i.e. play & replay a segment from a CD and be able to control speed without changing pitch. This exists for Wintel, but I haven't been able to locate for Mac.

Make sure you're using the Audio CD option in lieu of the Data CD.

there are many mp3 decoders .
go to any shareware sites and enter search for mp3decoders . u will get many.
i use a mp3decoder and it work.

enter the winamp-setup and step to the plug-ins
menu.
select the DISK WRITE plug with doubleclick.
exit the menu and hit PLAY. you won't hear
anything now while winamp writes the MP3 to disk
as WAV.

i don't use winamp myself. I would suggest geting yourself a dedicated mp3 decoder prog.
personally, i use mp3 decoder from hpl software.
but you will also find several here at hitsquad
