Re: ERRORS when trying to burn cds

You might want to try recording (or simulating) at a slower speed for the buffer underrun error. I used to get that error when I first started cd recording on a slower computer than I have now. When I would attempt (2x) it would error, so I tried (1x) and it wrote ok. The sessions will take longer when you decrease the speed but it should help overall. The other errors I'm not familiar with. Good Luck

HELP!!! NEED A ASF/ASX to WAV/MP3 converter

I'm throwing this one out to the experts here.

I'm familiar with Winamps disk write plugin
to transfer ASFs to WAVs. The problem is
that I need to convert a streaming ASF/ASX
file.

I am also familiar with Virtual Dub, but like
the Winamp plugin, only converts a file that
resides on your hard drive.

Surely there has to be some way of capturing
the audio from a streaming file into WAV or
MP3.

I've even tried playing the streaming file and
then bring up sound recorder to record the
audio, but I can't run two audio devices at the
same time.

I'm sure this knowledge would help out a lot
of people on the board here, so please post
a response if anyone has a good idea.

Thanks!

John

You can do this but you need two programs.

Firstly get <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&method=or&format=builtin-long&words=SID">SIDPLAY</a> so that you can play SID files
then get <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/TotalRecorder/">Total Recorder</a> so you can make a WAV copy
as you listen.

You don't need a sound card with a Mac but it will improve the Input/Output quality of the audio as the MiniJack connectors are hardly professional. They will be ok for demo's etc.

Specifying what equipment you need depends greatly on what your going to do with the studio. It would be silly for anyone to recommend a synth module that may only do half of the things your wanting to do. Microphones, pre-amp's also fall into this awkward catagory to recommend. For an initial idea I will list the things I own and use to give you an idea of what other people are using for their studios at home or wherever...

Macintosh 6400/200 with Steinberg serial Midi interface running Logic Audio 4.0
Yamaha EX5R Synth sampler with SCSI interface connected to a ZIP100 drive for backup and storage. (This then connects to my Macintosh to enable SMDI sample transfer between my computer and sampler, recommended!!!)
Roland D110 old synth module
Roland W30 sampler (used as midi controller keyboard mainly)
Roland VS880 HD recorder with effects and digital desk
Behringer 26/4/2 Anologue mixing desk
Philips audio CD burner connect digitally to the VS880 for digital mastering and connected to optical CD player for sampling etc...
Digitech Studio Quad 4in 4 out Multi effects unit connected to Behringer Aux's and returns
2 x quad 303 power amps connected to ex-BBC (broadcast) flat response monitors fed from behringer (Also feeds Gale GS 301 monitors from Denon Amp/preamp)
AKG 451 condensor pencil microphone
EV408 dynamic microphone
Various others including PZM boundary microphone.
Loads of other tit bit's collected over the years...

This may be unhelpful or not. I'm not recommending you buy this set up or any of the equipment listed, it's just an insite. Give some more feedback on what you are wanting to acheive with the studio and you will receive more guidence in the direction you should take

Regards

Steve

Re: Home Studio w/ Mac

Steve, Thanks for your response. What I want to do...well, I want to record and mix acoustic guitar/ piano/ voice tracks and put them on CD. This is primary. Secondarilly, I'd like to orchestrate some tunes I've been working on...w/ horns, electronics sounds, percussion...mostly sampled sounds, as i don't play all the instruments I want. Eventually, (when I learn engineering) I plan to offer my services as a low-budget portable studio for amateur musicians who'd like to give their music to friends, family, or to go as far as each person would want, but that's down the road.
Question: if I run a mikc into the CPU can I get by without a preamp for a while?
What else do you think?
Again, thanks for responding. I'll make good use of the info you've sent me.
Chris
: Steve

That's ok...

I do the same thing as you with my home setup I suppose. I try to be as acoustic as possible and compliment it with electronica. You mentioned 'portable studio'. Portable studios are cool but rarely involve a computer system unless it's a portable truck studio or more major operation, i'm not quite sure what you mean. I have the Portable VS880 HDisk recorder which is very portable and excellent sound quality. It allows me to multitrack on the move and then bring it back home and intergrate it back into the home studio. I don't think I would bother if I had to hulk my computer and peripherals around anyones house unless they were paying me well...

If I were you, I would invest some money in Microphones. The reason I say this is because if your primarily doing acoustic recording, it's important that you have a good source signal. Quality condensor Mics are essential for a real professional sounding acoustic instrument. You could plug a dynamic microphone into you computer as it accepts Microphones as well as Line level. Don't forget though that condensor microphones need 48vdc power and wont work directly into the computer.

When you mention Pre-Amp, I think what your wanting is a Mixing desk. The output provided will be at line level despite what you have plugged into it which allows you to connect straight to your computers audio input. You could then plug all the microphones and synths into it including condensor mics providing the desk has the 48vdc power supply (Phantom Power...) and mix the output to your computer. You could then multitrack, add effects and mixdown your song to the audio out of the 'puter or burn it to CD. Reasonable desks aren't that expensive these days. Mackie and Behringer are recommended, the latter being better value for money although probably not as good as Mackie. I've got a Behringer 26/4/2 and it's as quiet as a mouse.

Just a few ideas...

Cheers

Steve

Re: Home Studio w/ Mac-What do I need??

Hi Chris,
I'm at work right now. I can't go into much detail. If you would like to drop an e-mail to me at adsmith1@mindspring.com and I'd be glad to share info on the setup I am currently using. Be advised once you start with this Home Studio" thing the addiction is at once totally overwhelming! Hope to hear from you soon.
