A follow up question. I have Soundforge. I want to edit out a chirp in the middle of a wav file. Does anyone know off of the top of their head how to do that?

Re: SUGGESTIONS FOR WAV EDITING PROGRAMS?????????

Soundforge : www.soundforge.com
Cooledit : www.syntrillium.com
Wavelab : www.steinberg.com

These are some of the best ones out there.

"Wavelab" by Steinberg is an excellent program. I prefer this to another very popular one called "soundforge". you can email me for further questions.

CD Track to Midi ?

Is there a way to convert CD Track (.cda) to midi.

Re: CD Track to Midi ?

Sure there is...I can understand why you want that so much...MIDIs are of a small size!

You first need a CD RIPPER which will take the song from the CD and put it as a "wave" file usually on your hard drive....from this site, find one in:
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/CD_RIPPERS/
then once you have it... and have the song (s) on your hard drive all you have to do is convert it to MIDI...
It won't be possible to convert it completely...because, um, it's impossible!
MIDIs are a totally different thing!
I would recommend you read this first...it applies EXACTLY to you!
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/9903_101/
look under
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/FORMAT_CONVERTERS/
for converting the wave file to midi...

your two best bets would probably be:
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/AmazingMIDI/
AMAZING MIDI!

and
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Digital_Ear/
DIGITAL EAR!

glad to be of service...

Re: CD Track to Midi ?

Nice answer Mystical. Inserting useful links into a message makes it informative for all the readers. I believe that Logic Audio is capable of converting it's tracks to midi although I haven't had this confirmed.

I have heard that it is important to give the software 'simple' audio information to convert like a solo instrument. A full song will more than likely turn to mush...

Ultimate Orchestral Percussion to be released

The DS Soundware Orchestral percussion library is the first sample library dedicated to giving composers and arrangers a true pallet of orchestral percussion sounds with capabilities unmatched by anything else available.

Due to revolutionary micing techniques, the samples were recorded with the natural acoustics of a professional hall built in thus, allowing them to instantly meld into your work with little or no vertical placement; instruments that sound like they are coming from their correct position in the ensemble, not the "in your face sounds" you are used to.

By sampling the best instruments played by professional orchestral percussionists DS Soundware ended up with the highest quality, most realistic percussion samples available. And, each instrument is provided with a vast array of performance possibilities including right and left hand snare hits for realistic rapid passages, consonant and dissonant triangle strikes to create the perfect tonal shading, tambourines with right and left hand samples, thumb rolls, shake rolls, crescendos, multiple pairs of crash cymbals with sustained crashes, choked crashes and scrapes, suspended cymbal rolls, crescendos, mallet hits, stick hits, chokes, bells and scrapes, mallet instruments and timpani with multiple mallet choices and all velocity switched allowing incredibly realistic dynamic changes. Also included is a great collection of exotic percussion; wind chimes, thunder sheet, almglocken, ratchet, finger cymbals, clay chimes, bamboo chimes, porch chimes, Chinese bells, Chinese bowl, Chinese nipple gong and anvil are all available.

*The shopping cart should be up on the site late tonight. The product will begin shipping next friday 4/5/00 and the price including shipping will be $299.00. For more info, pictures, and audio demos of all the instruments go to http://www.dssoundware.com

using wav as midi sound

Is it possible to take a sound recorded as a wav file
and make it availble as a midi sound? I've heard about
these ROM cards that provide additional sounds for
synths, but I don't have a fancy synth. I have a
keyboard controller (fatar studio 610), an external
sound module I hook it up to (roland sound canvas SD-35
which has excellent quality GS midi sounds), and of course
my trusty PC. Can I use midi mapper to do this? Is this
what is referred to as a "patch" or is that something
different? I also just got a new Roland UA-100 (usb dsp) which supports
midi; haven't played with that enough yet. any guidance just to get
me started or pointed in the right direction would be great. thanks

Re: using wav as midi sound

Maybe i didn't ask my question right. I am not interested
in converting a wav file to a midi file for listening purposes.
I am trying to figure out how to take a recorded sound (say a
hand clap) and then use that recorded sound as a midi
instrument. So I have this hand clap recorded as a wav
file. How do i get a midi keyboard to use this sound so that
the pitch changes as I go from low c to high c?

Can you tell I'm a drummer?

What is the best music notation software?

Has anyone heard of Miracle music notation software? Is it any good? Why? How does one get it?
If you haven't heard of Miracle, what software do you recommend for music notation and why? I have Rhapsody and also Finale98. I was told Miracle was best, but I can't locate it. Thanks for your help.

Re: What is the best music notation software?

Finale is the most powerful music notation software program in the world. When it comes to features, power, and flexibility, Sibelius doesn't stand up too well to it. If you need more than that, feel free to e-mail me... I can show why.

Re: SIBELIUS V FINALE

Sibelius is good and easy too use...but not as deep as Finale. Im not 100% sure but I think Finale is good if you are serious about publishing score as its more flexible with details. Where as Sibelius is easy to use and good for composition. But of the two I feel better with Finale, despite what most think.
Its harder to get your head around though.

Re: What is the best music notation software?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Allegron and Finale.
I'm told Allegro is a little simpler than Finale. But
Finale is what a number of music publishers use
(Hal Leonard) for example.

A Hal Leonard rep recommended Music Time. I have used
that program. It's very easy to use AND, as the rep
said to me, you get a lot of "bang for your buck"

I think the best music notation software I ever saw is Melody Assistant, or even better, his "bigger brother" Harmony Assistant. Why? Try yourself at www.myriad-online.com and download their demo versions.Enjoy the quality of sound and the easyness of use.

Sibelius...

Sibelius is probably considered the best one. It's used by many musical institutions around the world and touted as the best choice by them. Download a free Macintosh/Microsoft demo at...

I have found "Mozart" to be the best notation software for scoring arrangements.

Re: What is the best music notation software?

You can't beat Melody Assistant. It's shareware for less than $20. Has similar features to software costing hundreds more. I can't believe they sell it that cheaply. Check it out at: http://www.myriad-online.com

Re: What is the best music notation software?

What a big question, Which is the best music notation software. It is of course possible to get used to anything which will be used on a regular basis, and this includes Music software.
I am only an amateur musician, my main instrument is the trombone and a small amount of piano tinkling. I have been using 'Encore'for 9 years now, and this was formerly published by Passport Designs, but now owned ny GVOX, who are supposed to be redeveloping it to V5, sadly this has not yet happened !!!!!!!.

I have only ever used Encore but have tried a trial version of Sibelius, good ,yes, but somehow I was not totally convinced. It seems to me that there are just two contenders, Finale & Sibelius. But all software programms will work, some better that others. In the final reckoning it will be the quality and content of the music composition/arrangement that is the final goal.

I would have considered Encore 5, if it had appeared to have been the best music software,
but of course that is just my opinion.

Happy hunting and deciding your software.

Best wishes to all you musicians.

Nicholas Cooper. ( UK )

Re: What is the best music notation software?

There is a cheap music notation software program (20 GBP) called Muse, available from www.musements.co.uk which has a 30 day free trial. Customers of Muse say it is quick and easy to use. There is also a feature to convert normal 5-line music notation into guitar tablature, it can transpose, play back and has many other useful features.

using 32+ meg sound font with a sb live

I know it's possible to make a sb live use a sound font bigger than 32meg, but I forgot the trick. I remember it was something to change in the register...
Can someone help?
that'd be nice!
Rodolphe

Re: using 32+ meg sound font with a sb live

If you add more memory to your system, and slide the memory settings you should be able to go past the 32Meg Boundary for sound fonts. I had 64MB of memory, and the soundfont manager didn't let me get past 31.5MB, when I upgraded to almost 200MB of memory, the SoundFont manager allowed me to get up to about 90MB Sound Font data. You should be able to do the same. (Of course this only applies to the SoundBlaster LIVE Card, as far as I'm concerned). Try that.

downloading .ZIP files from this site

Hi guys n gals.
Im havin a problim trying to download the .ZIP files
from this site. When they appear on my hard drive or
zip disk, they have a movie player icon on them and of
course windows won't let me open them to execute them.
I have an unzip tool from winzip and one from iomega,
but i don't know how to get winzip to recognize the file
as one of it's own. Compressed files are buggin the
heck out of me cause there's so much cool stuff here.
Canya help a dummie?
Thanks

:) Here's the help:

Hey there,
:)
I had the same problem....
when files download from specific sites, and have the wrong extension, (in your case: .mpeg instead of .zip) i wished for the "Open With" window to come up with a list of programs to open it with...a few months later I discovered how:
Click once on the ".zip" file you downloaded (and is opening as a "movie") once it's highlighted in "blue" from you clicking on it, hold down the LEFT SHIFT key... then, while holding the left shift down, right click once on the icon (that won't open right) in the "pop down" menu, the word "OPEN WITH" should appear in the menu, left click on it, and voila! Choose a file to open it with...WINZIP preferably (www.winzip.com) and if WINZIP Is not in the List, (it should be) click "BROWSE" and select where you've got Winzip stored...I'm sorry I'm explaining so long, but here's it for short:

1) HOLD DOWN LEFT SHIFT KEY
2) CLICK (RIGHT) ON THE ICON
3) CLICK "OPEN WITH"
4) CHOOSE A FILE TO OPEN WITH!

Simple? pretty...
there's a lot of windows shortcuts on the keyboard,
any more help? just keep posting on this message board!

See you,
mystic

What audio formats are accepted by CD player

What are the audio formats that the normal CD player accepts.
What is the software to trim audio files(songs)

Re: What audio formats are accepted by CD player

You can only use two types of files for CD audio, depending on your software, you can use wav files
or MP3's. Regardles of which of those two types it it, they MUST be 44.1 KHz or else it will give you an error, and wont' burn it.

Logic Audio manual

anyone does have the LA manual v. 4.0 for mac?
thanks

No Pirates on this site...

You can buy a book on Logic Audio but I don't know the name. If you bought the program then you will have the manual. If you've lost it then you could buy one from Logic if you are a registered user. If you have an illegal copy then you would do better to 'NOT' let people on sites such as this know. It's the perfect place to get yourself in 'Hot Water'. Don't be fooled by the many illegal requests on this site recently... it's NOT the place for this sort of discussion...

n-Tracks drum tracks

I'm having difficulty creating a drum track with

HOw are you doing this? I guess I would probably
make a drum track in an external app and import
track into n-track. Have you tried that?

FREE Top-Notch Digital Reverb

All,

I had recently been looking for a decent Shareware PC plugin reverb. Unfortunately there only seemed to be commercial offerings. As for Freeware plugin reverbs - forget it. They simply don't exist.

So I recently decided to write my own high-quality reverb. It didn't take long to write the code. As a Sound Engineer the thing that took the time was "tuning" it to create the best sounding reverb possible, with silky-smooth reverb tails.

The aim of "Freeverb" (as it's called) is to provide PC users with studio-quality silky smooth reverb - FOR FREE. It is already getting extremely positive feedback on discussion forums and through emails to me (and it's only been available for since 22nd April!).

Anyway - if you get the time, please feel free to try Freeverb for yourself at:

http://www.dreampoint.co.uk

It's a studio-quality Digital Reverb that costs nothing!

If you like it, then please pass on the recommendation. High-quality reverb is essential for modern music production and it seems wrong to me that some people are denied it simply through budget limitations, when their existing equipment is more than capable of providing it.

Anyway, please let me know if you think it's good/bad/rubbish - whatever.

Very best regards,
Jezar.
