Let me tell you a story....

When I was 15, my buddy gave me a shitty mic. I had a tapedeck, so I figured I could record onto the tapedeck with the mic and my guitar. I plugged the MIC into the tape deck, and sang and played my electric. I knew I wasn't going to open air everything cuz I had tried that at a friends house and it sucked.

So I got a cable to run from the headphone out of my amp into the line in of the deck. I got a splitter too, so that I could plug the guiatr and MIC into the amp simultaneuosly. But then the guitar had no power, and couldn't go distorted even with the distortion on. I only recorded one tape like this. Lots of static. But I realized that MICs need power.

Next, I got two amps, plugged them into the spltter and into the tapedeck. Damn near blew the deck. Next lesson: Headphone out is too powerful. Try line.

Next, I had to give back the other amp, so I got a four channel mixer. Fed the MIC into a tapedeck with a MIC input and out to the four channel. Fed the guitar to my amp then to the four channel, From the four channel I went to the final tapedeck. Recorded 14 tapes like this. Couldn't do overdubs, or editing, etc. But it got great sound.

Next, I was introduced to MIDI. MAde MIDI song, plugged it and my mIC into the four channel, recorded to tape. Sounded pretty good. Did 1 song.

Next, I decided to record to my computer. Had only half-duplex (no simultaneuos play/record), so I used a splitter and fed the MIC into the left channel, and the guitar into the right. Edited each separately in CoolEdit, and mixed multiple versions together to create eerie panning effects and fades, filtering, and echoes, delays, etc. lot of work. Long time ago. Did four songs. They rocked, but the sound sucked. Lacked warmth.

Haven't recorded in years. Right now I'm waiting for my new computer to get here. PIII with Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96, Cubase VST, Gigasampler Full, Rebirth, Wavelab. This is what I will be using.

Re: about recording things......................

: what do you use to record music?

Well that seems like a simple question, but boy is
there a lot that could go into the answers :)

The best thing would be if you started by telling
us what kind of music you want to record (from CDs,
from a microphone etc.) and tell us what kind of
gear you currently have - do you have a soundcard
on your computer? a microphone?

With a little more info there will be lots of ppl
here who can help.

Slicing our tracks HELP!!! Steve, Dude Look!!

ok, im not exactly sure as to what u mean in the beginning, but think of it as me trying to take vocals or guitars out of a track on a normal old cd. (Say the new Creed.) like i wanted to make a parody or something. does that help you?

My band "Eteko" is searching for a way to take our mixed recordings from live performances that are digitally recorded, and take them on a PC and chop em up. What i mean by that is taking out lyrics, or my guitars, or taking everything out except my guitars.

Any Help is apreciated.

There is a Direct X drum-remover program in the Software section

...of this page.

Next, you can use the vocals remover made by AnalogX at www.analogx.com

As well, try building the song out of loops of the instrumental parts of the song. At the beginning of the verses, for example, do they play the chord progressions without singing? Grap these sections and loop them.

Next: how good is your MIDI rig? Buy a sequenced version. This is guaranteed to have all the tracks pre-separated and without vocals.

Need just vocals? I have submitted to AnalogX a method of isolating just vocals. Does it work? I don't know, but we can bug him into building it.

I wish...

I have a feeling that I have replied to an earlier message that you posted on the HitSquad forum regarding removal of individual instruments from a stereo or mono recording. I noticed a new message from you saying "Look Steve Dude" in the title, was that me you were refering to??

Plain and simple answer this...

On the whole you don't really have a hope in hell of breaking your mix in seperate instrument tracks. I say 'on the whole' because it is loosely possible. You can 'sort of' remove the vocals from "some" recordings although not completely using a Karaoke type program that simply put, seperates the center of the mix from the rest of the stereo spectrum.

This can work reasonably well depending on the placement of instruments in the stereo field. If you had a track with 'No" stereo reverb on the vocals that were placed dead center in the mix and a guitar playing panned hard 'left' and another guitar panned hard 'right' the program would find it easy to blank out the guitars or the vocal. Add some stereo reverb to the vocals and maybe another guitar (what a track!!) roughly in the center of the mix
with a stereo string sound and the whole thing generally gets confused. Add all the noise and stereo confusion of some live recordings the whole thing becomes hopeless.

Look at it this way. Imagine your making a cake and you have 4 ingredients. Once you've mixed the ingredients together the chances of you seperating them are extremely remote. This is a loose comparison to the problem you are dealing with but it does explain the complexity of what you are expecting a computer to do.

fruity loops hogs soundcard... is there any way to get it to sha

I really need to record live what I do in fruity loops... I know about the whole internal sequencer and all that... but, I like to mix tracks live... and I would really like to be able to record straight to cooledit or soundforge while I mix in fruity. is this possible? do you need a special type of soundcard? or, is this just something that you cannot do with fruity loops? thanks

Come to think of it........

If you have the processing power to do it, I think you can get Soundforge to record from the Wave Out, without any extra interconnects, but to do so, you probably need a lot of power, I tried doing something similar once, but just playing back a file, and recording, there was no real mixing going on, and it was using a lot of processor time.. anyways, it was done using an SB Live card.... try it out...

Re: fruity loops hogs soundcard... is there any way to get it to

Hmmmmmmm... What kind of soundcard do you have?
What about recording to an ADAT or DAT? then you could transfer it to the PC later, for further editing..
I JUST got Fruityloops yesterday, and I LOVE it, but am still learning about it....

I have soundblaster live

yeah, dat would work... I was just wondering if there was a way to do it all internally, so I wouldn't need to spend the money on any extra recording gear. I think I'm going to have to stop being lazy and just start sequencing instead...

HELP!!!!

my original question is way down by now. thanks for looking.

Paying CD

: my original question is: I called before 5 days ago,for buying a CD. and I did not get my CD yet.there is any rong in my crdit cart or some things rong with mail.so i need you to call me at 716-241-9790 or email me at malmansuri@hotmail.com

Re: HELP!!!!

That depends on how you record.
If you record on a multitrack,, like an ADAT or minidisc, then it's relatively easy, you can edit it later on, if you want to use a computer, you can get hardware for the ADAT to let you transfer the tracks to the PC, where they can be edited/mixed, etc..., then sent back to the ADAT.

One way or another, let us know what you are currently using, and how you record, then we can go from there.

What computer program can remove music from songs??only left voc

Please tell me!

THE REAL WAY TO LEAVE ONLY VOCALS:

I have only theorized this, but it should work. All you need is for someone to bug the software guys to develop it.

All you "I'm so big because I know how vocal removers and inverters work" guys will agree with me on this one I guarantee.

Check my math.

Original - (Original - Mono) = Mono.

That's right TWO PHASE INVERSIONS !

1. Invert right channel. Mix with original left channel. This gives Original - Mono (left).
2. Invert mono-canceled left channel. Mix with original left channel. This gives Original - (Original - Mono )

Re: THE REAL WAY TO LEAVE ONLY VOCALS:

I believe it doesnt work. I think i tried what you said (and its same as what ive tried before) i sne dup with the original song

Re: THE REAL WAY TO LEAVE ONLY VOCALS:

Yes, you are dumb.

"1. Invert right channel. Mix with original left channel. This gives Original - Mono (left)."

right channel = x, left = y
-x+y = x-y => 0 = 2x-2y

"2. Invert mono-canceled left channel. Mix with original left channel. This gives Original - (Original - Mono )"

Ambiguity: mono-canceled left channel

tried it..

I used Goldwave to try this out. It never worked. Re-check your math, i see how it may work tho. maybe i made a mistake, i don't know. I haven't been successful yet though :p

Re: What computer program can remove music from songs??only left

Sorry, I misunderstood your question!!!!

Something that leaves only the vocals?!? Never heard of it!

then how do I mix a pop song to a techno or house dance version?

I have mixman studio,hammerhead,fruitloop..
how to do with these? please teach me someting
please!

Re: What computer program can remove music from songs??only left

You don't need a computer program to do this. It's a fairly simple circuit called an inverter - you invert, i.e., put 180 degrees out of phase, say, the left channel of a stereo song, and then you mix it with the normal (in-phase) right channel. Anything that's in mono, i.e., exactly the same in both channels, cancels out. Usually this means (at least) the vocals, bass, and some of the drums will disappear.

I think they sell those things in the back of music mags, like Guitar Player or something. You might also approach an electronics tech-type person - if he knows his stuff he could build you one.

Hey!! Karaoke...

This has become the age old question and the answer never changes.

Basically, there is no 'reliable' way to remove any sound completely from a stereo/mono track/song. The Karaoke method is the most used and can sometimes give very good results depending on the songs mix.

Vocal cancelling relies on the vocals being in the 'middle' of the mix and the rest of the music being panned off center. Recommending any software as you didn't mention which platform you use Mac/Microsoft is tricky but programs like Audion (Mac) MP3 player has a Karaoke mode in the menu options, that's all I can help with. Other people should recommend software for this man (if you've read this for) for both platforms.

I hope this basic technical information has been somewhat enlightening.

I don't know...

Err... I don't know to be honest. Being a Macintosh user I was hoping one of the PC users was going to jump in and recommend something.

Post a message to the Forum asking for Karoke software or have a look through the downloads on this site. They have a good selection...

Sorry...

How do you do MP3 to CD?

I know you can copy cd to MP3. I know you can copy MP3 to .WAV. But how do you copy an MP3 DIRECTLY to CD?

Re: How do you do MP3 to CD?

Download the Nero Demo - this program converts
MP3 'on the fly' and automatically records it onto
your CD-R.

help with JP8000 + Midi?

I have owned a Jp8000 for about a while which i use with VST on my Mac, all works fine, but the problem that i am having is that i can't work out how to adjust the cut-off freq, modulation etc via midi. Unfortunatly the manual is of little help. I would be greatful if anybody can shed any light on the subject, thanks. Mat

SysEx...

I use Logic on a Mac and must confess I don't know Cubase that well. The information that you should be looking for is to do with the System Exclusive information that is sent via Midi to and from Midi devices. If your sequencer is receiving SysEx information then it should record this information from your JP as you play. This will include program changes if selected and all manner of things like knob adjustments. I'm probably not much help as my experience with the JP has been having a fiddle in a music shop. Nice sounds though. Check that it and the sequencer has SysEx switched ON.

ACID on a laptop?

HELP!
Now thats a good way to start a posting..
I've got a Toshiba Tecra 510CDT and need a program that
works like ACID, but will run on this older system.
SYSTEM SPECS:
p133mhz, 64meg, 10xCD, Crystal PNP audio, 2gig HD.

Please note: I'm not looking for mod softs, just a good
multi-track wave looper kind'a thing.

Also:
If any of you have this same system... How or why does
my modem want to answer the phone when it rings? I don't have anything that would cause this installed, unless Wintendo 98 has some sort of twisted need to call home or something.?!.
Thanks for what ever help anyone can provide........

mac computers and me....

okay, i know its mostly about personal opinion, but what is the best way to
a: record sounds from an outside source ie. turntable, microphone, acoustic guitar, electric guitar/bass or drums or pretty much anything
b: edit these sounds into a full song
c: burn them onto a cd ie. what format do they have to be in.
And as for midi, wav, etc, what is the difference and can they both be put into the same song?
Now, I believe that the best route for me to go is Cubase VST combined with ReBirth and maybe ReCycle, but has anyone heard of Reason?
Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have.

You should use a mic preamp that has a DI on it. Then plug that into your computer/tape recorder/sampler/microwave/whatever.

b: edit these sounds into a full song
You just need some audio/sequencing software like Cubase/Logic/Cakewalk..... A sampler would work also for the audio portion.

: c: burn them onto a cd ie. what format do they have to be in.
To burn them on to a CD they would need to be a Wav or AIFF file.

: And as for midi, wav, etc, what is the difference and can they both be put into the same song?
Yes they can be put in the same song but they are completely different. You should do some research, it will help you in the long run. Check out the following:

Not a bad way to go. Reason is not out yet. It's supposed to be really cool.

Hope that helps

Increasing volume and vocals of a live recording

I have a live digital recording(minidisc) of a concert I went to, but I had the recording volume set low. So I need to increase the volume a little without extra noise, and if possible increase the vocals. Any suggestions?

You need to get a two track editor for your computer like: Sound Forge, Wave Lab, Bias, something like that. With the careful use of EQ, compression, and normalization you can master your recording. Do you have a computer w/ a sound card?
A unit like TC Electronics Finalizer would also do the job.

Hope that helps

Re: Increasing volume and vocals of a live recording ANOTHER WAY

Not to diss greg but i would try this. If you have a decent stero with a line out feature and you own the cord, plug you minidisc in. set its play level to max, your stereo input to max, then depending what you want put it on after (say cassette) turn output (or recording) level to what you want. The back noise you still have to play with eq and that shit. I have an aiwa that can accept minidisc and a 400 watt rack amp from my guitar rack. thats usually how i boost though: amp - - - -> stereo - - -> to output. If you can get a hold of someone with great guitar (or anything with an amp not bass though) it will be awesome.
