Sample CDs

: I'm new to the electronic music scene. Can someone tell me how to use CDs of samples so I can get better sounds than my synth provides? Do I need a sampler to use them, or can I load them directly into Cubase and assign them to various tracks from there? Either way, how do I do it and what do I need? Also, what are some potential problems with samples? Is there a limit on the duration of a note I can create with them or...? Thanks.

Sample CD's either have a section of audio which you can record, and maybe loop, or a specific sample that is already mapped out for the keyboard (simplified...) and is loadable by the type of sampler specified on the sample CD. Emu or Akai are popular formats for Sample CD's although you can load Akai format samples into many different manufacturers machines, Yamaha A3000/EX5 for example.

You will either need a sampler or a sampler card or software sampler to load in the machine specific samples providing they can load the relevant sample format but, the Audio samples could be recorded onto you computer and used within an Audio Sequencer package. I use Logic Audio and it can load .WAV/.AIF samples directly onto a track to then be processed, looped etc... I should think Cubase can do the same.

How to convert midi files to wav files??

I have been trying to covert midi files to wave files but all my efforts so far have been futile. Either there is an unsuitable program or I have no wav patches. Is there any reliable program that can convert midi files to wave files?

EASY TO CONVERT MIDI TO WAV ...COSTS NOTHING

IT CAN BE DONE.

Go to http://www.mopflash.tk

But to summarize, you need to open a midi player like destiny. Others should also work. Open sound recorder ( from accessories in windows 98) and open volume control. On volume control, click options, properties, recording, then click the check mark by 'mixed output'
then click 'record' on sound recorder, and then 'play' on your midi player. when done, save as' in sound recorder. You will have a wav. And it costs nothing.

Download FREE Music software at : http://www.simtel.net/simtel.n

Cubasis and basic home recording

I am making a first attempt at setting up a small, basic recording studio. It has been suggested that I pick up Cubasis for my laptop computer, a small mixer with good mic preamps and two good recording mic's. While I won't be able to record multiple tracks (which I don't need at this point), this appears to be a relatively cheap and easy way to record some basic stuff. Any comments on this setup and particulary on whether Cubasis is a good choice of music software?

Recording Vocals

I am currently working with Cubasis VST and a Omni I/O/Delta 66 Sound card. I have been having problems setting up Cubasis to record audio from my microphone. Whenever I record enable an audio track, and try to insert it on the channel mixer, a small "m" appears on the arrangement next to the selected track. Why is this "m" automatically appearing? What is or isn't configured correctly?

Re: Cubasis and basic home recording

If you are operating on a small budget , you can pick up small handheld preamp to convert mic to line levels etc for about a hundred bucks. It will probably VLZ or very low impedence which is the only recommended way to go. The great part as long as you do not need multiple inputs this unit will be all you need ever pre-amp wise. Sometimes these are called mic to line conveters. Good Luck

Re: Cubasis and basic home recording

my wife wants to record her own song and make a cd.
i am good with computers.
what will i need to record a song.? and how much will that cost me.
i do have a pentium computer.
thank you

I think Cubasis (especially the cheap Cubasis
VST) version offers a great value for money and
will absolutely do well in a basic studio setup.
Besides, if you have that version, a future
upgrade to "bigger" versions of Cubase will be
relatively cheap - should you need it. And best
of all is that Cubasis is compatible with the
other cubases...

Software worth "buying"

Free software is usually something we tend to look for, I for one, have been caught in a few fiascos that I don't care to mantion, but learned that research is the best weapon, trial and error stiil is a great way to get things to work for you, but sometimes depending on your needs and deamands, a little research and a bit of trust will take us far. My last "three point shot" was with the Mixman Remixing Studio. I got the free demo at first cause I had read something on RollingStone Magazine, the demo was cool so I thought I'd get it and work it. Great Move. There were some other options at that point, including Acid. The Mixman site, interface and fx features simply met my needs better. There's a community around users of the tool, but unbias opinions is something I also trust and was hoping to get feedback and notes from users of the same software.

VST MIDI stumper

I am having fits with my system after 2 trouble free years.
I am running VST 3.7r2 on a 350PII, 128mbPC100, 2-4.3gb UW
SCSI hd's, Layla (5.02), and Opcode MIDI Translator serial
through the VST dongle.

Everything got along fine together until I recently had to
have Echo replace the power supply in the Layla. When I got
it back, I reinstalled the Echo drivers, and VST, and now
Cubase will periodically lose touch with the MIDI Translator.
The Opcode diagnostics show that everything is fine and will
talk to the synth, but VST won't until I reinstall the Opcode
drivers. This has happened about 5 times in the last two weeks.

Any help would be appreciated. Further info: I have an Alesis QS6.1
on one channel of the the Opcode, and a Yahama RX-17 drum machine on
the other. I have a POD hooked to the Layla's MIDI i/o, and don't seem
to have any problems with that in VST.

Re: VST MIDI stumper

I would recommend reinstalling your OS. I HATE WINDOWS because it is so unstable, and I have to reinstall it every 6 months or so. My setup isn't as sophistacated as yours, but it gets used a lot.

Reason to recommend reinstalling OS: I bought a 400 Mhz AMD K6-2 with 128MB RAM, SBLive! and an IBM 14.4 gig 7200 RPM HDD (fastest at the time before going to SCSI). It came with Windows 98 OEM installed.

Cut to the chase: when I recorded digital audio every where else EXCEPT sound recorder, I got these annoying clicks in the audio. Servicemen came out to my house four times, they replaced everything in the machine one piece at a time, then shipped it out to California. The people at Creative Labs didn't know why this was happening. I was to the point of throwing my hands up. I got Windows 98 full and installed that. Clicking was gone. I reinstall my OS every 6 months or so when it starts to lock up too much.

Peace
Neptune303

Re: VST MIDI stumper

Thanks for the input. I need to bite the bullet and
start with a clean slate. I configured this machine
totally for audio and MIDI, using all of the available
recommendations from Dan Duskin, etc, and as I said, it
has been a joy to work on until this last spate of troubles.

I am also going to pick up a USB MIDI interface, as I
have never had total faith in the VST dongle not causing
problems at some level. I have a serial ZIP drive that will
work thru the dongle, and the MIDI Translator will work thru
the dongle, but neither will work when connected together
thru the dongle. I probably should have gone USB prior to
this, but the old "no broken, no fix" adage seemed
to apply. Plus, I am saving my hard-earned beans for the
new VST-24 5.0.
