The most expensive one I think is Gigasampler and most people seem to swear by it. I personally haven't used it.

MTC...

Hi,

I don't know cakewalk very well and I have had no contact with the D-90. I did take the time however, to read up a little to see if can receive Midi Time Code (MTC) and it does. This is generally the answer as MTC is perfectly usable.

If you start and stop playback and recording with the computer then make the computer the Master MTC device, if not make the Fostex, the choice is yours although most people I know do it from the computer. Make the other device the MTC slave and make sure that both machines are running at the same frame speed per second (FPS) otherwise a warbling effect can occur. Also connect a Midi lead form the Output of the Master device to the Input of the Slave device. Like i've said, I don't know cakewalk but try and head towards the Midi settings page and find something like, "Transmit MTC" make sure that this is selected. By rights, the system should be in place to work although you may have to do things like, press play or, record and play on the fostex, (if it's the slave) which may enable a flashing play light, waiting for the play signal from the computer.

Music Studio for IBM...?

12 years ago I bought a simple little sequencing program called Music Studio (by Activion or Audio Light, I think) for my ATARI 1040. I foolishly sold the computer but would like to run the software as there is a lot of important music to me on it. Does anyone know if this software was ever written for IBM and where I can get it? Or where can I get another ATARI 1040?

Re: Music Studio for IBM...?

I dont' know if there is a program as such anymore, but if you let us know what format it is, there might be a program that can read the same format, i.e cakewalk, or something else.

fruity loops midi and audio

I really like fruity loops feel and use it to sequence my beats, but when I export midi files my sequencer can't read a lot of the midi info.

Another thing is, is there any way to get fruity loops to play audio samples AND control (midi) an external synth, at the same time: in sync.

My fruity loops version 1.4 plays audio and triggers midi at the same time, but the tempo of the audio is different from the midi tempo.

Can anyone help?

Re: fruity loops midi and audio

Hey there,

I don't think I can answer the question, but I can tell you that heaps can be done with the latest version of FruityLoops.

16-bit as a master????

I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 with a 16-bit soundcard.
I wonder whether it's pro quality for a master copy.
Is there any pro quality standard for making music with a desktop????
Do i have to upgrade my soundcard with the 24-bit/96 khz to reach the standard for a master copy.

Re: 16-bit as a master????

If you are making a professional CD, and it will be mastered, or is being sent to a pressing plant, then you want to have the audio in 16 bit 44Khz otherwise, it has to be downsampled, and they WILL charge you for that. however, pre-mixdown, it's a good idea to do effects, etc at a higher bitrate i.e 32 or 24. You do not need a 32 bit soundcard to work with 32 bit audio..howeever, to listen to it, you have to downsample when playing it back.

16bit/24bit, lets call the whole thing off...

24 or 32 bit has become the Pro-Level norm although the important thing to remember is that the main consumer and professional platform for listening to music on is CD which is 44Khz@16bit.

Sound cards some in all shapes and sizes and sadly most of them don't really go for high quality components, usually the opposite, I suppose due to the fact that people want the cheapest thing available for computing regardless of the quality. I'm just glad that most people don't have the same view with other domestic products and i.e. High fidelity, washing machines otherwise the conciencious would have to put up with cheap rubbish or pay a premium for something decent due to the fact that nobody else will. Anyway...

If you have a digital output on your card then use it to master from, if not, master to an internal CD burner. Buy a 24bit card by all means although you may find that, if your just using the Phono (RCA) connectors on the back of the card, the Analogue process will be disappointing. Basically, I have albums that have obviously been made on cheapish equipment from the past and I would still rather listen to them than some of the more refined ones due to the fact that the quality of the performance and songwriting is the most important thing.

Need Help setting tracks on JV1010

Its Sunday and I have a borrowed JV1010 with no manual. All I need to do is set about 7 tracks so they will play what I choose with my Logic song played on the Mac computer. Everytime I think I have set them, they change if I stop the song. THere is some sort of preset default happening and I have no idea what to do. It would be great if someone knows what to do.
Thanks,
Kathryn

SysEx

How well do you know logic? It sounds like you have the 'Receive System Exclusive' turned on on the Roland which maybe why the programs are changing when stopping (or more than likely starting) the song. If your not using them to enable logic to send program change information to your Midi device then don't use it.

I know Logic well and use it on a Macintosh G4 although I have never used the roland JV. The idea should be simple though. Your multi timbral parts in the module should be midi numbered 1-16 therefore you should be able to select part one as say, drums and then select track one in Logic as Midi channel 1 on the selected midi output and so on. Get back to me if the sysex thing doesn't help.

hello everybody,i hope somebody can help me,i downloaded d-lusion drumstation some time ago but i have had to format my computer since, my problem is that when i downloaded drumstation again the program would not initialise, its telling me that [crc]parameter is wrong, can anybody explain what this means and perhaps tell me how to solve the problem,i would be most grateful for any help forwarded. leo

CRC

Sounds like a faulty checksome in the program/archive.

Re: What do I need to set up my own studio (Personal Use)

If you just want to keep things easy and 'cheap', there are many options for you explore. I'd start with taking a look at n-Track Studio.

There's also Cakewalk Guitar Studio 2.

Audio recorder...

Hi,

This sort of question can have many different answers from different people, here's mine.

If you already have a PC then you could look into one of the new packages, the main ones being Logic Audio, Cubase VST or Cakewalk, the favourites being Logic or VST these days although Cakewalk has some devoted followers. These programs are Audio and Midi recording devices that use the power of you computer, negating the necessity for external hardware. (Not really negating, more giving an alternative).

From the guitarists point of view, this will give you the ability to Multitrack upto as many audio tracks as your harddrive and processor can playback at once and give you the option of Pluggin's which are cool insertable effects for individual tracks. There is also a lean towards insertable software synthesizers these days with the affore mentioned companies fighting it out for the most impressive soft synths and drum machines usable within the programs. Some of these are most impressive and would more than likely suit your needs.

Your mention that you don't have that much money so this software solution maybe favourite for someone in your situation. The top flight programs mentioned can run upto £550 although the companies offer 'cutdown' versions that will probably do you just fine. Cubasis VST is one of them and Logic Audio fun (AV) being another. I have a full working version of Logic Fun that came free on the front of a magazine and I think the newer versions can load VST and Logic audio pluggins which will keep you busy for ages. Computer music magazine last month gave away 27 VST pluggins on the attached CD so this is more than just a budget exercise!!

The audio possibilites combined with amazing Midi spec's will give you the starting point for a home studio. The effects offered are often professional level and support the guitarist. You have the hardware, explore the software!

Looking for certain program, need name of it????

Looking for a program that allows me to save sounds and then play them back whenever I need them, and easily, as I broadcast a radio show over the web. Thanks,

Max

Re: Looking for certain program, need name of it????

Try winamp.
it's supports most formats (not just mp3)
and you cna have a playlist.
the only problem you may come across, is it wants to keep playing files in the playlist.
otherwise, keep all teh sounds in a single directory, don't use the playlist, and drop teh file into winamp, and it will play the file once. then when you are going to play the next oone, just drop it in...

Cakewalk as a drummer

I am very impressed and surprised at some cakewalk drumtracks that sound like a session drummer. Are there any creators out there who have mastered some of this and could i hear your work. also could you suggest some tips... for example.. do you click your in with a mouse.. tap them in through your keyboard through midi..etc.
what about legitimacy of cutting pasting some tracks. Are the drum tracks that come with pro audio 9 usable like acid or are they not free for the taking. is there such a resource..?

MP3 download errors with MP3 Finder software

I just purchased Magix playR deluxe audio mixing software which included MP3 Finder. It works great locating downloadable MP3 files but every one I try a download it starts downloading up to about 270 kb, then tries to open the file. I then get an FTP error message saying the file was unable to be opened. When I copy the URL to copy direct from the web site I either get the same message or I get a
non-authorization message.

How do I copy a karaoke CD with CD-Graphic text format?

Please recommend a software that can successfully copy both the audio AND CD-Graphic (CD-G) data from my original karaoke CD's onto a CD-Recordable disc.

Re: How do I copy a karaoke CD with CD-Graphic text format?

I think the easiest way would be to make an iso of the disc, then burn it onto blanks.

cd burning on Mac platform= ADVICE SOUGHT

I am using TOAST DELUXE on a powermac 8100/ 110 mhz.
When the copying process or burning begins, my
computer freezes. Computer has been diagnosed as
problem free by Apple tech, and the software manufacturer
says this should not and cannot happen.
Anybody know an alternative software to Toast, for burning cds on Mac ?

Any suggestion on troubleshooting my computer freeze,
or alternative software advice will be appreciated.

Jim Brunswick

Re: cd burning on Mac platform= ADVICE SOUGHT

You may want to try a simulation burn at a lower recording speed, if you haven't already and see how the computer reacts. There might be a lack of processor speed but it would seem as though any power Mac would be fast enough ? I had a simular problem on an older Performa Mac but when I was fortunate enough to move up to a G3, the huge increase in speed made a big difference and I have had good results since with Toast.

There are others...

Hmmm, that sounds weird... I don't generally get problems like that with the Macintosh. Toast in particular is very reliable in my experience. It's worth doing the usual 'rebuilding the desktop' processes just incase it's not finding a file that it's looking for and running Norton disk doctor to make sure there are no errors. I personally find that this sorts out the problems.

EZ CD creator I believe is available for the Mac or direct CD from Adaptec.
Go take a look.

cubase working in multi audio but only 1min

hi everyone,
thanks for your help.i now have ews88mt card and cubase multi recording in 8 inputs.
but i can only record up to 1min of sound.
have tried in 22khz but programm crashes, i can use salplitude lite up to 5 inputs and 10min no problem, please help.

Re: cubase working in multi audio but only 1min

How muc h free disk space do you have? Also, make sure you defrag often, definately beofre recoridng.
1 min of 1 channel recirding @44Khz 16 bit mono = approxamitely 5 Mb
So, if you are recording 8 channels, each mono 44Khz 16 bit, it will be about 40Mb per minute, until they are mixed to a single stereo track.

converting files to windows format??

I download a lot of music (cult theme tunes etc) from the net and I want to be able to use them as 'sounds' on my computer- for 'start windows' - 'exit windows' etc. But when I try to put them on I get a message saying that the file is either damaged or uses an unrecognized compression format. Is there a way of converting these files? and if so how?
Thankyou....

Re: converting files to windows format??

You need to convert then to wav format
you can do that with winamp.
To convert in winamp, turn off the repeat button, and click the button at the top left of winamp. and select option / preferences / output
select disk writer, but rememebr which one was selected before. double click disk writer, and select a directory on your HD. then put the songs you want converted into your playlist, and play the songs.
you won't hear anything, but if you have visualisation, it should work.. you might want to disable the visualisation too though. once it finishes, go back to the option, and change back to teh driver you were using before.. wav out or direct sound
Just a tip though, if you are planning to use full songs, it might take a while to shut down, and you'll find it annoying....

Plz. Help With Cubase VST Latency Issue...

I Have A Latency Problem With My VST. It Occurs With All Of The Midi Modules And VST Instuments I Have. When I Press A Key On My Midi Keyboard 2 Trigger A Sound, I Don't Get The Actual Sound Until A While Later. My System Should Be Able 2 Handle This Level Of Work, Based On The Specs Given. I Have An Intel Celeron 433MHz, Ultra DMA Hard Disk 4.3GB & A Fast IDE 20GB Hard Disk, & 128MB SDRAM...I Think It May Have Something 2 Do With Audio Buffers & Things Of This Nature, But I'm No Audio Pro So I Don't Know 4 Sure. If Some One Could Help Me With This I Would Be VERY Grateful. Plz. E-Mail Me At LNationsBest@AOL.com And/Or Post Here....

Latency, oh dear...

Just a note. The speed of the machines processor is rarely the main cause of latency. It's the time the signal takes from one point to the next. In this chain you have to consider things like the soundcard, Midi interface and application. VST on the PC is a bit of a dog for latency although they claimed to have sorted out the problem with later versions of Cubase. Logic Audio is supposedly more able to deal with the app. side of the latency problem, I don't really notice a latency problem with my system which is a veritable bonus.

If you plug your keyboard into the PC's audio input and plug in the Midi. Record an audio track from the keyboard and the midi track as well. Play one note. Try playing back the track and see what sort of delay you have. You can see by lining up the Audio track aside the Midi track and measuring the difference in time, which will give you the information on how much to offset the Midi tracks versus Audio tracks. In practice, this is a pain but it's a solution if your latency is out of control.

Cheers
