Re: MP3S should be outlawed

In junior high and high school there was always this core group of guys that DJed. They had to buy stuff as soon as it came out as they had to have the newest music for parties. And everybody would ask them, "hey make me a tape, or a mix tape." And usually, unless you were really cool with them, they charged for it. This was in the 80s. Now with the technology the format has changed. This is one of the things that copyright law just can't do anything about. I suppose you could muscle your son to talk, and then turn the guy in. But the industry already knows a certain amount of music is going to be bootlegged. As with movies. When I was in Asia my friend's entire DVD selection was pirated. 5,000 bootleg copies here or there is not really a big issue. But with things like Napster, what one guy may be doing in his neighborhood suddenly expands to millions. That is an issue. But the guy around the corner doing CDs for friends? Unless you appeal to his moral side, he's pretty much untouchable.

I sympathize...

Selling the compilation CD's is a bit much although he's only a kid, it's probably up to you to explain to him that it's not the done thing and the reasons why. A lot of us here though don't think much of the industry as it is and don't care at all for their lost profits. It's their capitalistic approach to musical creation that has caused so many musicians to have to live on bread and water in the vain hope of being one of the chosen few. The whole thing is in the process of changing and ironically, it's the advent of easy pirating that is making the change. I don't steal peoples music for the sake of it, it's because I believe that this very process is the one that will bring down the industry as is and open up a much larger playing field which will benefit the creators of this world, I certainly wouldn't re-sell it!

The Artist is being ripped off at both ends but there is a solution. I can almost imagine a world where the Internet is the main form for exchanging music that we have made. Setting up your own site containing our own music for people to download. If you hit a note with the general listener then good things could come of it. At least the people get the option to distribute their music to the General Public which is rarely the case under the current regime', it's got to go.

If it was my child I would tell him to go and get a real job but I would chuckle over my shoulder at the fact that he is indirectly and unknowingly chipping away at the music industry machine that I despise.

Regards

Steve...

Re: MP3S should be outlawed

I understand. I agree 100% with what youre saying. but, look at the good side of mp3, and any media that can be distrubed on the net. mp3.com gets I don't know how many bands in the public eyes. My web site has pieces of my songs in mp3 and it has landed some good jobs. I like the concept behind LiquidAudio, but too expensive to be worth buying into as a musician.

But, musicians NEED to eat too.

Re: MP3S should be outlawed

It's hard to stop kids doing what they want to do isn't it? MP3s aren't really the problem in this case. It's the fact that someone is selling these compliations (if I assume they are pirate CDs). Even if MP3 was banned, it would never stop people trading or selling music in other formats. The best thing you can do is let your kid know how buying pirated music is essentially paying some dude who is ripping off musicians like yourself. If your kid points out that the record companies rip off the consumer and the artist, point out that the guy selling the CDs is also guilty of the same thing but to a greater degree. But the difference is that the record companies pay the musicians and provide financial backing. Pirate line their own pockets. Record companies desire profit so much that they often back commercial failures in the desire for commercial success - whether that be a long ot short term aspiration.

Still, I was a kid once. I bought heaps of bootlegs and copied 100s of albums. Times changed, I grew up and my views are different.

: My Kid is forever coming home with cd's that were made from mp3 files and the source of them is charging at times big money for compilations...I am a musician / composer and I would be damned if someone will ever bootleg my music for resale anyway...BMI-ASCAP ?
: What good are these organizations if we can go out and profit on anyones material anyway !

I understand your concern but MP3 isn't the cause.

You can make compilation discs with normal uncompressed
audio, or with RealMedia files or some other compressed
format. If DVDs become more popular you will be able to
put as many uncompressed songs on a DVD as you can put
MP3s on a CD.

I don't know the answer but I do know that MP3 isn't the
cause of lots of people copying and bootlegging music.

Alf.

Re: MP3S should be outlawed

I understand your position, the MP3 controversy us definately a volatile one, however, I can see how the MP3 format can be used to promote an artist more than any record company does.

I mean, every record goes to a record store... it's not like you have to look too hard to find anything.. record companies dont' do anything for the artist with that money.

I think if MP3 was eliminated completely (WOn't happen) and dosc prices were decreased by about 10 or 15 percent, and more of the money made was given to teh artist, the world would be a better place.

pitch bend by numbers

Which software and/or plug-in alters the audio-frequency of a given sample (e.g wavetable or gigasampler) by an adjustable amount, controllable or verifiable in numbers or %?

I use SoundForge and CoolEdit and they both do this fine. I'm sure there are some freeware progs that can do this too though.

I don't know the PSR, but it may be able to
do a "MIDI DUMP", meaning it will send its
contents through the midi-cable so you can
"capture" it using any midi-sequencer that
can record incoming midi-signals. I don;t
know if that will solve your problem but
it's worth checking out I guess...

How do I convert audio tapes to mp3?

How do I convert audio tapes to MP3 files?

Re: How do I convert audio tapes to mp3?

you need to connect your tape player to the input of your soundcard. you can do so using a Y cable which connects the output of the tape player to the soundcard input. then just set your input (Line in) volume level, and record..

How can I copy a CD without track skips?

What software is best for duplicating an audio CD without breaks between tracks? CloneCD?

Every type of software I've found so far has a pause between tracks. This is really annoying when you're trying to record a DJ CD which is continuous with no sound breaks. Bad for some classical CDs too.

I also want to use the same audio image to copy to flash memory for my digital music player. Would RealAudio be the best format for that?

Pls advise, and write to pstjmack@netvigator.com if you have the answer. Thanks!

Paul

Re: How can I copy a CD without track skips?

: What software is best for duplicating an audio CD without breaks between tracks? CloneCD?

The trick is to enable the feature called
"Disc At Once" (DAO) which is implemented in
most cd-recording applications. Sometimes it can
be kind of hidden into deeper layers of the
menu's though. But enabling that option will
burn your CDs without the 2 second gaps...

Cheers,

JJ

Re: How can I copy a CD without track skips in media player 9 ?

I have looked through all available menus and cannot find the answer. In previous Media Players it just copied as per the original CD.

Please help as i am pulling me hair out.

Thanks

Muzzy

Re: How can I copy a CD without track skips?

If you use Easy CD Creator, when you click file, then Create CD, then click the Advanced tab. Choose disc at once to get rid of the two second breaks between tracks.

I would really recommend Virtual Sampler, which can be used as a stand-alone application or as a VST instrument. You´ll find it at http://www.maz-sound.com/vsampler

You will find heaps of them on this web site at

One of my favorites is Signum 1100 DX which is a
DirectX emulation of an AKAI S1100.

Transposing Music using Software

Many of the songs I play to accompany our congregation on the organ are written in a higher key than is comfortable for many people to sing. Is there any software out there that will allow me to scan music and then have the software program transpose it to a lower key so that I don't have to rewrite everything?

Re: Transposing Music using Software

I had the same problem at our church, and I've been searching the internet for a quick solution. So far, I have found 3 programs:
1) Finale - top of the line, very elaborate
$447.00 ($287.00) for academic/institutions
2) PrintMusic! - Simple
$64.00
3) Allegro - A level between the previous two
$177.00
At my school, we have a program called "Rhapsody." This is a simple, yet effective program for transposing and composition, yet I cannot seem to find it anywhere on the internet. It may not be produced anymore, but it is very helpful program! I hope this helps you! Try this webpage for more details: http://musicmall.com/cmp

Very much so. Music Publisher 32 (Windows 95) and its add-on MP Scan does the job. A few Sundays ago I scanned a hymn in F minor and reprinted it in E minor in a total of 5 minutes.

Have a look at www.muspub.com for further information and evaluation download. Price is $120 or 80 pounds for Music Publisher and a $90 or 60 pounds for the MP Scan add-on.
