HELP!

I'm trying to download a program that deals with audio mixing, I've never downloaded from here before and once I have somethng downloaded and I click on it all that shows up is wordpad with a whole bunch of strange writing. Am I stupid or is something wrong? Get back to me ASAP!! thanks!!

Re: HELP!

mmm this sounds a little funny. You'd need to be a little more specific I think. What platform are you on? Windows? Mac? Maybe u r downloading a PC file to a Mac? This would not work and may have the results you describe. If you are on a Mac your choice is limited so get a PC ASAP! or search for Mac music software. www.sonicspot.com is a VERY nice site why not have a look here.

That looks like something to do with MusicMatch Jukebox...Do have and MP3 player at all? Like Winamp? You'll need a player to listen to the songs you downloaded with Napster.

Using Shareware to arrange music for keyboard playing

I have a Technic KN6000. A friend told me he has shareware but lives in Florida. He arranges his music on the computer and puts it on a disk to play on his keyboard. Sounds interesting. How is this done. I am interested since I entertain seniors free. What do I need to get started, etc.

Re: Using Shareware to arrange music for keyboard playing

What you need is a MIDI sequencer. This will allow you to write music and then save it as a MIDI file which you can then load into your keyboard.
Take a look at <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/MIDI_SEQUENCERS/">MIDI Sequencers</a>

Minidisc recording

Any ideas on what (free) software to use when trying to record from my minidisc onto my PC?

The reason I ask is because I want to record compilations from my favourite Napster tracks, but can't get round the Serial Copy Management System.

Cheers.

Re: Minidisc recording

Not sure what u mean mate! Can't you simply plug the mini into your PC mic socket and record the tracks with Windows Sound Recorder? Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder

Don't ever plug anything into the mic socket, use the line in on your soundcard, it sounds a lot better.

Mixing MP3's for recording.

Hello,

I have a CD-R and I want to make my own CD's, but I want to be able to mix the tracks together professional-like, fading out and into songs. Is there any software out there that can do this? Particularly with MP3 format. Any help?

Thanks for your time,
Christopher.

Right, here's the deal. If you want to record the output from your MP3 DJing program to wav and you don't have one that has built in recording, forget about utilities like Total Recorder and Virtual Cable. Total Recorder seems to have problems recording the output of other programs unless you can set the output sound device to Wave Mapper or Automatic. Most MP3 mixing programs won't let you do that. If your program does let you set the main output to either Wave Mapper or Automatic, then you can probably use Total Recorder. Virtual Cable has enough of a delay between the input and output devices that in most programs I noticed a slower response time when pressing play. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist. The quality of MP3 has enough problems that I don't like the idea of using an analogue connection between two sound cards either. So after a lot of frustration, I finally figured it out. Here's what you have to do. Step 1: First you need at least one duplex sound card. Not much of a problem most of them are these days. Set your programs main output to a duplex sound card and the headphones to a second one if you have one. Step 2: Go into Control Panel under the Start Menu under settings. Open Multimedia. In the Audio Tab check to see if the Sound Card you set as the main output in your DJ program is the selected Playback device. Step 3: Click on the Playback button. If in step 2 the card you set as your main output in your program was the selected Playback device, make sure that Wave is selected and that the volume is set to something reasonable. It should say Wave or Wave/DirectSound or something like that. If you don't see it or if in step 2 the card you selected as your main output in your program wasn't the selected Playback device, click on the Options Menu, click on Properties, select the Mixer Device for the sound card you set as the main output for your program and make sure Adjust volume for Playback is selected. In the list select Wave or Wave/DirectSound and click OK. Now you should see it. Make sure it's selected and set the volume. Then close the Play Control window. Step 4: In the Audio Tab check to see if the Sound Card you set as the main output in your DJ program is the selected Recording device. Step 5: Click on the Recording button. If in step 4 the card you set as your main output in your program was the selected Recording device, make sure that Wave is selected and that the volume is set to something reasonable. If you don't see it or if in step 4 the card you selected as your main output in your program wasn't the selected Recording device, click on the Options Menu, click on Properties, select the Mixer Device for the sound card you set as the main output for your program and make sure Adjust volume for Recording is selected. In the list select Wave. Warning! If you don't have a duplex sound card you may not see it listed. Click OK. Now you should see it. Make sure it's selected and set the volume. Then close the Record Control window. Click OK to close Multimedia Properties and then close Control Panel. Step 6: Run your DJ program and a recording program. In your recording programs options set the recording device to the same one as the main output for your DJ program. If your recording program doesn't allow you to set the sound devices internally )most of them do), you'll have to set the sound card you selected in your DJ program as your Recording Preferred device in Multimedia. Start recording and what you mix should be recorded. Some mixing programs will take over your sound card. In this case you'll either have to wait until you close your DJ program to playback what you've recorded or you'll have to set your recording programs output to another device internally or in Multimedia.

Hi Christopher,

You might want to check out an audio editing program called Cool Edit. You can find more info. at: www.syntrillium.com

Cubase Instruments

does anyone know how to change the instruments on Cubase VST for a particular track?

thanks

Re: Cubase Instruments

Hi Anthony,

First select the MIDI track. Then click the arrow button in the bottom left of the arrange window to open the properties for that track. To change the instrument for the track, just click on the Patchname parameter to select a new instrument.

Best,
Scott

ACID2.0 editing loop tool

a time saving feature is the edit loop feature on ACID2.0 that allows you automatically to transfer the loop straight into cool edit or any other loop editor program by one click of the mouse and then to save the changes made in cool edit whoch will automatically save changes in ACID2.0..makes life a little easier rather than having to open folders and import it into cool edit and etc

Re: Thanks for the Tip!

This is similar to a tip I ran in a past issue of my newsletter. You can do the same thing within Cakewalk by selecting some audio, lauching an external editor, editing the data, and save it back to Cakewalk. Here's a reprint of the tip:

DFreqTOPIC - Adjusting the Cakewalk Tools menu

Copyright 2000 by Scott R. Garrigus. Reprinted with permission.

Cakewalk Pro Audio, Guitar Studio, and Home Studio allow you to launch other software applications using the Tools menu. For example, if you have an audio editor installed on your computer (such as Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge), you will see it listed in the Tools menu. This lets you edit your audio data using another program without having to close down Cakewalk. But the Tools menu can also be used to launch any other type of software. Programs like Sound Forge are automatically detected by your computer, but for other programs like software synthesizers, you have to add them manually. This is done with a little tweaking of the Windows Registry.

WARNING: Manipulating the Windows Registry can be a bit dangerous. Even small changes to the settings can cause your computer to crash, so please be very careful and follow these instructions very closely. I won't be held responsible for any damage that may occur, so please take care.

The first thing to do is make a back up of your Windows registry. That way you can return it back to its previous state in case you have an accident. To make a back up, follow these steps:

1. Select Start>Shutdown.
2. Select Restart in MS-DOS mode, and click OK.
3. At the WINDOWS prompt, type SCANREG /BACKUP (be sure there is a space between SCANREG and /BACKUP).
4. At the WINDOWS prompt, type WIN to restart Windows.

If you get into trouble and you need to restore the Registry, do the following:

1. Select Start>Shutdown.
2. Select Restart in MS-DOS mode, and click OK.
3. At the WINDOWS prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE (again, be sure there is a space between SCANREG and /RESTORE).
4. Select the first file in the list that appears, and hit ENTER on your computer keyboard.
5. Restart your computer when prompted.

Now lets add a new item to the Tools menu. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Select Start>Run, type Regedit and click OK to open the Registry Editor.
2. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the list.
3. Click the plus sign next to Software.
4. Click the plus sign next to Cakewalk Music Software.
5. Click the plus sign next to Tools Menu.
6. Right-click on Tools Menu and select New>Key from the pop-up menus.
7. Type in the name of the program you want to add to the Tools menu. For this example, type in Volume Control. We'll add the Windows Mixer accessory to the menu so you can have easy access to your sound card volume adjustments.
8. Right-click Volume Control and select New>String Value from the pop-up menus.
9. For the new value, type in ExePath.
10. Right-click ExePath and select Modify from the pop-up menu to open the Edit String dialog box.
11. For Value Data, type in the file path for the program you want to add. In this case, type in C:\WINDOWS\SNDVOL32.EXE for the Windows Mixer.
12. Right-click Volume Control again and select New>String Value. Type in MenuText for this new value.
13. Right-click MenuText, select Modify, and type in the name for the program that you would like to appear in the Tools menu. In this case, type in &Volume Control. NOTE: the & is not a typo. What this does is add a keyboard shortcut for the letter V, so that you can launch the program via your keyboard rather than your mouse.
14. Right-click Volume Control again and select New>String Value. Type in StatusBarText for this new value.
15. Right-click StatusBarText, select Modify, and type in the text that you would like to appear in Cakewalk's status bar at the bottom of the screen when you go to select the program in the Tools menu. In this case, type in Run the Windows Mixer.
16. Right-click Volume Control one last time, and select New>String Value. Type in Type for this new value.
17. Right-click Type, select Modify, and type in the category the program belongs to (such as WaveEditor). If you don't know the category, just type in Generic. Do that for our example too.
18. Select Registry>Exit to close the Registry Editor.

Now when you run Pro Audio, Guitar Studio, or Home Studio, you will see a new entry in the Tools menu called Volume Control. If you select this entry, the Windows Mixer will run. Neat trick, eh?

Re: garage drum feel

thanks jason, your tips were quite use full ,sorry it took a
while to thank you, any oter tips on drumming and programming
garage etc would be usefull if you have time ,iusually programme
drum loops about 4bars ,let it loop then start to add fills etc
preceeding the next section, is this common practice or is it
better to do 2 bar phrases,im not a drummer by the way, i play
classical piano and have moved on to write pop etc, at the moment
im having a bash at this garage scene, if theres anything i can
help you with, or me being in london england helps you in any
way ,please dont hesitate to contact me ,thanks again .H

Re: garage drum feel

Hi,

Sorry it's take a while for me to respond. Being the CEO of this
company means I don't get a lot of time for personal correspondance
or writing music these days.

The only other tip I could offer is that when I program drums I don't
use loops when trying to go for a 'natural' sound - I program the whole
song start to finish in a MIDI Sequencing program. This doesn't mean
you have to program every beat because you can use 'Cut & Paste' to
copy bits you want repeated and then just make small changes to timing
and volume of individual hits just to give it that natural feel.

I hope this helps,
Jason.

Encore v4.?

Will someone please tell me where i can purchase this program?

Re: Encore v4.?

Hi,

Encore has long been a favorite for musicians who need scoring or notation. Unfortunately Passport Designs filed for Chapter 7 bankrupcy recently so this will likely be the last encore version you will see for a while. The Passport web page is gone, but you can get comparitive notation info at http://web1.pmci.com/~bbshop/passport.html you can still buy Encore - most places sell it for $300 now.

Hi SMH,

I'm not totally sure about this, but I don't think Encore is available on the market any longer. If you need a good notation program, you should probably check out Coda Music Software (www.codamusic.com).
