What's it for?

I am on the verge of buying the Emagic Audiowerk 2 card as it will provide a low latency decent RCA in and out with a SP/DIF. I don't want it to make any sounds on it's own, do you? There are cheaper ones but you have to be careful about the quality. A decent card will be noticably different to the sound cards that most people seem to have, I can say that from previous experience. There is the Audiowerk 8 card that provides more ins/outs or things like the Korg1212 which has been around for some time. Some of these cards provide ADAT digital connections that can give you many digital ins/outs to and from an ADAT compatible device or mixing desk. Quality is rarely cheap so you will get what you pay for.

Good Luck

Can a newer laptop run audio editing software decently?

Im in the process of getting a $2000 bank loan with the intention of purchasing an HP Pavillion N3350 laptop for music production. My band already uses a good old fashioned desktop PC, but the ease of portability given by a laptop appeals to me. Is this a good idea?

Re: Can a newer laptop run audio editing software decently?

As long as it meets the requirements for the software. Laptops are easy to carry around and make life easier.
Make sure it has a decent sound card if your taking audio/midi out of it.

Recording software

I'm trying to set up a home studio for my husband's birthday. He has a PC and wants to be able to do everything he can do at the pro studio across town in his home office. What is the best software? What about other things I might need to buy in order for it to be up and running by the birthday celebration? I'm a novice, obviously, and have no idea what to get. Help!! Thanks! :)

Re: Recording software

It depends what kind of music he plans on producing. If he is into standard Rock and Roll, Steinberg WaveLab or Cool Edit Pro are a good choice to make the tracks sound nice, and CakeWalk could be used to do all of the mixing.

There is a confusing list of software to choose from, but he WILL need a decent Audio Editing package (WaveLab, CoolEdit), and a decent Sequencing package (Cake Walk).

I have a recording studio for my band, and I feel your pain. Hope I helped a little.

Re: Recording software

His music is along the lines of Limp Bizkit,
Korn, Method Man, Dre, M&M with a little bit of
Rage. He needs to be able to do samples, record,
mix, burn cd's... Any more advice you can give
me as far as peripheral equipment I will need?
Many thanks -
Cheecha

Problems playing wav files

I have a problem playing back wav files, specifically when I am trying to record them to a cassette player hooked into the speaker jack. Problem is when its playing back it occasionally cuts out for a second or two. I know its not the recording cause when I stop the wav editor and go back over the same section it plays perfectly. Is there some background system that I need to turn off? I have windows 98.

Converting MP3s

Can anyone tell me why when I convert MP3s to WAV using Winamp, then normalise using Audio Catalyst, burn using Easy CD Creator 4, that the ends of songs are chopped of? If I try to use CD Creator for the whole lot at once it always tell I haven't got enough room, even with 850 megs free. Is there another program that will do the lot?

Re: Converting MP3s

Sorry for mi english. I send this mail From Argentina. Try using NERO soft. Or, if you wish, convert the mp3 file onto .wav with D.O.S. Decoder (I have this program, and don´t have ANY problem)

Mystery expanding files

I wanted to transfer audio tracks from tape to cd, so recorded the audio tracks as .WAV files. Since the audio quality of the tapes is not wonderful, I recorded as 22KHz, 8bit, mono. This gave me small files compared to a 'CD quality' .WAV, so I expected to be able to fit more tracks onto the CD. However, when using 'Easy CD Creator' the files mysteriously swelled in size about 10 fold so I only got the standard 74 minutes on the disk. Why did this happen? Is there any way to prevent it? Is my vision of an audio CD with several hour's of music on it a pipe dream?

Any help appreciated before I make further CDs.

Many Thanks,

Martin

Re: Mystery expanding files

Due to the nature of audio on a CD you won't get more than 74mins
The only way to get hours is if your where to burn MP3s to CD but you would then have to use a MP3 player to listen to them.

CDR newbie trying to choose a burner

I'm purchasing my first CDR drive and so far have narrowed my choices down to two drives both are CDRW and both are IDE drives because I don't believe my computer has a SSCI card. The choices I have come to are the : TEAC CDW54E and Yamaha CRW8424EX. Price is an issue I have approx. $150 to spend and both these drives are listed in pricewatch as around or under $150 with cables and software. My application will be mostly to burn audio CD's. The reviews I have seen are good for both but I have concerns with both. One review stated that the Yamaha CDRW ran hot....this concerns me because I have heard that if they run hot they don't last very long. The other concern is that the TEAC has a 2mb buffer as opposed to the 4mb buffer for the Yamaha, with IDE I'm concerned that I might get buffer 'underruns' my PC is a Toshiba, nothing fancy but it has a pentium chip and 4 gig. Any suggestions insight? Thanks!

Missing serial number

I recently purchased your program "Music Write 2000 - Professional Edition." I loaded it onto my computer at home and then was required to move for college purposes. In the move process, I somehow misplaced the jewel case which contains the serial number. Please contact me with information on how to go about re-loading it onto my new computer here. Thank you for your cooperation.

Easy CD Creator Manual

Can anyone tell me where I can get an Easy CD Creator 3.5 manual online. Adaptec says they didn't make one, but someone must have written some kind of tutorial or manual at some point. I know it's easy to use, but I need some kind of reference when I'm having a problem. If I upgrade to 4, I can get one, but I just can't do it right now and sifting through the help files isn't getting me anywhere. If anyone has any info on this please let me know. Thanks, Kathy

Equalizing MP3's

is there a way to equalize mp3's when burning to a cd I would like to have all the tracks play at the same audio level, also what about mixing tracks and storing as a MP3 or other similar type ? any suggestions ??

Normalizing...

Using an Eq to balance the level of a combination of tracks is not the way to go. It will only boost/cut certain frequencies rather than the desired overall level of a track. Normalising will increase the track to just below digital clipping and will therefore suit your purpose. Most if not all audio editors will provide this function as well as many other app's. I don't know what computer you have so recommending software would be too laborious...

Cheers

Konvertor

Konvertor will let your convert all media files
associated with Windows Media Player even Mp3s and some not media
files as while. Someone here had asked about converting
Mp2s that program will do that but they can only be
converted to WAVs. So far I find it useful.
The link is only to a demo of the program.

LATENCY HELP!

Hi, I downloaded the vst 32 demo and the audio latency is really bad. I,ve got it down to 45 milliseconds but it's still very annoying! My vst 24 works perfect, so I cant understand why this does not. Please help!

Hmmm...

Everyone suffers latency to a degree and it's often related to the Audio card installed and the program you are running. Cubase has always had a bad rap for latency and claims to have reduced it in more recent version. Pro-Audio cards like the Korg 1212 or the Audiowerk 8 will give much better results. What computer do you have?

Sometimes, you have to live with it and mute annoying instruments whilst playing back and overdubbing. The best thing to do is time shift the tracks after recorded to match the information that you are recording, if you know what I mean. The offsets should stay roughly the same so you will get used to the adjustments you have to make. After all the material is recorded, it should be relatively easy to change the track offset delays so the song matches.

The good news is, a lot of people don't realise that offsetting things like bass lines to come in a little later than the drums (a tiny bit!) can create quite a nice groove. You then find that you end up with some tracks offsetting others because they sound good, not much of a scale balancer but a learning curve all the same.

Good luck

Steve

tapes to cd's

i would like to learn how to convert my analog tapes to cd's. i need the entire set up from a-z. thank u.

Re: tapes to cd's

This is how I do it. Record the tape into your pc through the mic line (Standard on any soundcard) and normal windows recorder. I then cut and paste the .wav as individual tracks using SoundForge or a similar audio editor, and then burn it to cd without the 2 second gap. Works great.

It's too hard...

It's too hard to figure out an A-Z answer to a questions that contains no information. It's obvious what you want to do but you must give people details of your setup otherwise they wont be bothered.

What computer do you have? OS? what are your soundcard audio inputs? what tape deck do you have? it's inputs outputs? if you don't know what they are called then describe them people are pretty helpful.

Steve

Any recommended Mac software?

I'm looking for software for the Mac that can take out the vocals out of a song. And also software that allows me to mix different songs together. Can anyone recommend any programs?

Thanks!

Firstly...

This website has a large file area work checking. Have a look in the Karaoke area and you will find some things. The thing to understand is that the Karaoke idea of taking OUT vocals from a song is nowhere near perfected, infact it's rubbish and will only impress on certain songs... Give it a go and be disappointed like everyone else.

As far as mixing different songs together, you should try looking in the same file area in Multitrack recorders and download a demo of something like CubaseVST. It's a shame that Logic Audio isn't available as it's a firm Mac Pro choice. I have seen 'full' versions of Logic Audio Fun on the front of music magazine disks so keep your eyes peeled. These programs will allow for recording from the Mac's audio input into the program or importing .Wav's or .Aif's and including them on the many tracks available. You can then move them, put FX onto them, do almost anything to them, a virtual mixing desk is available for functions like volume and panning Eq, the list goes on and on.

Don't expect a nice walk in the woods with any of the more serious programs, they will take time and effort to understand the many functions, when you have, you'll never look back.

Good Luck

.aif or .wave to .mid ?

In order to play a sound file in the background of a home page, the javascript requires a .mid file.

I have .aif and .wave versions of the file...how do I save the file as a .mid?

DIGI 001, or SEA SOUND SOLO?

I am trying decide between the digi 001 software/hardware
package from digidesign/pro tools, or the software hardware
design from Sea Sound solo. Ive heard the software for
digi 001 is great being only a slightly scaled down version
of pro tools mix 24, but the sea sound has award winning
pre amps on its i/o box. WHAT SHOULD I GET? any suggestions
would be great thanks

Re: DIGI 001, or SEA SOUND SOLO?

Hi
How are you. I have some comments for you on the protools system you can download a free ver# of protools it will give you 8 audio tracks and 48 midi tracks. One thing that I would check out is the tech support on the sea sound and who has used the system. But I have to say only you can make that chosse.
I have checked digidesign out for a couple of months now and seems to be a great company. One other thing make sure that the system is compatable with yours on eather one. Right now I have a penteum 3 with 512 megs of ram with a Asus motherboard. The digi is great but do run into some things with the hard drives not being fast enough witch are at a 7200 rpm, well any way good luck Doug

The Techs with Pro Tools are awesome!

I initially wanted to go with the Dgi 001 but my system wasn't compatable.....I am using Sea Sound Solo with Cubase 5 now.

I had a lot of questions for the techs at Pro Tools and they even called me back at one point which is something you will never see with the guys at Cubase. The technical support with Cubase stinks.

I've had a problem with my system hanging up and not shutting down properly when I've been running Cubase and I've been trying to get a straight answer from these guys for quite a while ....if you can afford to go with the Digi 001 and run Pro Tools...I would really recommend it.

Slobber Slobber...

The sea sound has something to do with Tom Oberheim which gives it a nice reassuring glow. I have read a review on the Digi001 (used briefly) and one on the Seasound and both look cool to me. I suppose it's down to many things as the units are similar in what they provide although a choice between Cubasis as part of the package and Pro-tools LE set them completely aside for me. Pro-tools is a lush program and Cubasis is the butt end of a excellent line of sequencers.

The price is different from what I can see by about £150-200 pounds more for the Digi001 which is a consideration, but it has to be said, if you are considering either of these then I presume you are quite serious about what you use and therefore assume you couldn't resist the 24bit 24 track digital ProTools system over a probably very competent Sea sound unit with sadly Cubasis.

Good luck, both of them are lovely!

Help

I am interested in purchasing a musicalsoftware that would allow me to select and record certain tracks desired, saved to a floppy diskette, and retrieve recorded tracks from my Yamaha PSR 630 & PSR 720.

This is a first time for me to try this, so could you please give me your suggestion of which software that would best fit my musical styles?

....

You have to understand that floppies are old and slow and are capable of holding a suprisingly small amount of data. If you are planning on saving audio, even in MP3 format, you will achieve roughly 1meg per minute of stereo data as an MP3. Forget wav you'll get no time at all. Midi data is very small although it ONLY represents the information of what notes you played, when, how hard you hit them, how long you held them etc... This is fine if you have a Midi device that will interpret that information and play some sounds that you can hear.

It sounds like the recorded tracks on your yamaha's maybe in midi format or you should be able to save them as such. If not, then you should have a Midi connection to and from your computer and play back the songs and record their midi information onto a sequencer.

You could try the demo of the Cubase sequencer (available on both Mac and Windows), which is available for download on this website, (address link below) which will record Midi information from your keyboard and will play back through your midi interface to any midi campatible device. You can fiddle and tune the information and copy and paste bits where you like. The program is also capable of recording Audio from the input on your computer as well as importing .Wav files etc...

This is only scratching the surface as programs like Cubase offer much much more. The demo is for the expensive version of the program however you could opt for cheaper versions like Cubasis or even go over to Emagic's 'Logic Audio' range which also includes cheaper versions. Try them first if you can. the amount of audio you can playback at one time is relative to your computers processing power, memory, HD speed etc... so if you have an older computer then don't expect the world!
