mac sequencers

I'm a music teacher in a high school and I've just changed to a new school. There's very little technology in the music department, just a few basic midi keyboards and some old Apple Macs - Performa 475, LCII. I've done a fair bit of sequencning but not with these older machines. Anybody know any cheap or free basic sequencers I could use? Won't need all the flashy stuff that you get with VST and Logic. Cheers.

It's hard...

It's hard to recommend computer software for computers that are quite old. The LC475 is capable of recording midi easily although I would like to trust it with much audio at all. Other than checking the massive file area on this board (link below) I would put an ad in a local magazine and ask for software from this era... there is probably tons around and about if you can make the contact.

Good Luck...

software for recording

Please advise me which software I must use in order to tranfer songs from records (33 and 78 rpm) to CDs. I already have the CD writer software and hardware.

Regards

Gery

Depends on your computer.

That would depend on your computer platform. Also, I assume that you have a record player that plays those speeds although you didn't say. Don't try plugging the record deck into the computer directly. Plug it into a compatible amplifier and then run a 'tape out' from the amp to the audio input on the computer. Check the file area on this board for simple programs that record from the computers audio input to a Wave file, there are tons of them. If you have to play the 33/78 RPM on a record deck that doesn't support those speeds then you will have to time stretch the final result although this may make the overall sound of the final recording a little strange as the speeds are so different from 45rpm.

T-rackS - anyone out there use this?

Ran across this program which includes a limiter, compressor, and a parametric EQ for mastering. Anyone out there use this program? I see all kinds of testemonials on their site, but.... I need something like this to master analog 8-track recordings that have been mixed down to 2 tracks but lack balls & sound kind of like they're coming from a tunnel when you get them on a CD. Anything that would let me actually use this program fully without paying the hefty price tag would help, as I can't tell what this thing can really do until I use it & burn the thing to CD & try on a real stereo system. Wouldn't mind buying it if it does what I need.

If not, any other good (maybe even cheaper)alternatives to this program that really work?

Email me directly if possible - thanks in advance!

I have used it...

I have used this program in it's demo form which I think has a noise every now and again which obviously spoils the song. I loved it when I first tried it but find the TC works native CL easier to get a quick result out of. To be honest, you can get a good result with a basic compressor limiter and a decent Eq. The T-racks does give a good tube and valve effect though and some nice results can be had from fiddling for ages with the settings although there is so many places you can go wrong and ruin the mix. The presets are okay but it depends on the song whether they give a good representation of what it can do. The thing that lets it down is the price. Mastering isn't as expensive as it once was on the computer and there are other options. You may do better to pipe the tracks into a computer multitrack audio recorder like Logic Audio/Cubase or Cakewalk and mess around with the tracks there. You could compress and Eq tracks individually and then use a compressor pluggin on the output. It's not so hard! What computer do you have?

Recording skips -- line-in to mp3

I am trying to record from a MiniDisc player (via the line-in jack) to either a WAV or MP3 format track.
The hardware is set up correctly (to the best of my knowledge) but the microprocessor (Pentium II) doesn't seem to be up to the task of keeping up with the encoding process. I have closed all TSR programs and even tried recording at the lowest bit-rate possible, to no avail. Do I just need to use a faster system?

generator and windows2000

i have p3 700, sblive, 512mb ram. I use generator with cubase VST on win98 with no problems. I tried to get it to work on win2000 pro but couldn't get the midi to hook up with cubase. Does anybody know whether genereator is compatible with win2000?

Can I sample and layer multiple guitar tracks live?

Does anyone know where I can get a program that will let me play tracks live and layer them (ie, record a rhythm track, press a button, and immediatly play a solo track over it)? Someone I know saw Phil Keaggy do it live. He recorded the bassline, hit a button, recorded a rhythm track on top of it, hit a button, and recorded more and more tracks on top of the others. If anyone knows where I can get software like that please e-mail me. Thanks.

Sounds like...

Sounds like standard audio multitracking. I could do that will a computer or my HD recorder. It's not hard. Did he play little sections then loop them? He may have done it on a computer and just had a loop setup. I have a tape somewhere of jaco Pastorius playing a bassline into a digital delay guitarists pedal and playing over the top of that. I used to do that when I was a mere youngster in emulation of him...

help me with my music

i am interested in making music on my pc and i need software that will fit my needs. I am in a band but the problem is we need to start recording with software but we can not find something that will dub in a second guitar or dub in the drums or even voice... the software that i have is good for recording but if u want to dub u need to do it with a completely separate file and i can never get the timing just perfect, so what i need is something that dubs in but also acts as a karaoke so that when i play the fill in's on guitar i can also hear the rest of the instruments... if anyone has a suggestion on the software that is appropriate for me just email me..thanx

Audio Multitrackers.

Audio multitrackers are extremely popular and are used by beginners to professional recording houses. You could have a look at something like Cubase VST on the PC or Cakewalk. I personally think Logic audio is the best on the Macintosh and i'm sure it's nice on the PC too. There are demos of programs and shareware equivalents in this sites download area. Try the cubase demo, I think it's in there. It will confuse you at first but persevere and you will achieve what you want.

BTW, don't plug your guitar straight into the soundcard, you'll break it. Get a DI box and a small mixing desk and run the line out from there. Don't over or underdo the levels into the computer. Those little minijacks are struggling enough as it is!

Anybody have a program to open a .UMX file? (Music)

Just asking....

Re: Anybody have a program to open a .UMX file? (Music)

HI !!!
You need the Modplugplayer or Modplugtracker.
Go to www.unrealed.de there you will find the programms to download.
You can also take the editor from the game Unreal
Tournament he is for creating the maps to the game, and there you must open the musicbrowser and then you can heare the umx file.
Here the link http://unrealed.gamesweb.com/news/info.php?DownloadID=275

Nope, sorry but...

I don't have such a program but I might know somebody that does. I have a friend that programs levels for Unreal Tournament in his free time and is currently helping with the UT version of the "Weapons Factory" add-on. I am going to contribute at least one music track for the add-on, which will be featured on the CD that comes with an upcoming issue of PC Gamer magazine. I came here because I'm having trouble encoding an MP3 or WAV from the line-in jack. Anyway, I don't think this guy would appreciate me handing out his e-mail to everyone so send me one and I'll see what I can do.

I need software to clean up vinyl recorded on PC.

I have recorded some old albums I have via a guitar cord and an AC adapter. Is there any software I can use to clean up the audio, get rid of the hiss and hum? I would like to make a CD out of various songs but do not like the poor quality sound.

Help with MIDI,iMac CUBASE and QY70

Hi,
I am willing to play midi files with Cubase. Also edit them but for the moment I couldn't hear no sound.
Does someone know how I must configure my iMac Cubase so that I can hear MIDI files through a QY Yamaha sequencer (or if not possible with other instruments like QuikTime) ???

Thanks,

Caristo

Don't know cubase...

I don't know Cubase very well anymore. Are you using OMS? You can route tracks to quicktime somehow but I have never done it. I will give you the below address for a forum that will help you if you can't get any help here...

error

Hi, Can anybody help?

When ever I use my sequencer/s (Cakewalk pro7 – Power tracks pro) I have a reasonably fault free session, but when it comes to shutting down (Start - shut down -re-start/shut down) I get the following during the shut down process:
A fatal exception OD has occurred at 0000:00000000. The current application will be terminated. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL again to restart (when I haven’t pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL in the first place) Press any key to continue. This I do and on re-start, Norton chips in and performs scandisk before Windows will re-boot. This is only if I hit a key almost as soon as the error message appears, otherwise everything locks up and all I can do is hit the dreaded “Reset” button.
WHAT’S GOING ON????????? This only happens with midi.

Here’s my spec:
AMD K6-2
4.3 HD
SB16 PCI (Basic cheap & nasty but does the business)
US Robotics 56 modem
Yamaha psr-730 keyboard – hooked to sb16 joystick/midi input

All intelligent replies will be most gratefully received

Thanks in anticipation.

looking for a good program

I am a deacon at a church. I'm not a musician, but I try to help our choir who needs new choir books. I need to buy a good program to write choir music (notation for four voices and text). Can you suggest a good program for this ? It will be even better if the program has the ability to scan and recognize (as much as possible) handwritten music and text.Thank you and God bless.

Try Sibelius !

its expencive but works great.

Re: looking for a good program

Hello: Tray with NOTEWORTHY COMPOSER. It cost is $ 39. I use it from 3 years ago. I'm musician and I can work without problem. The program it is very easy to use... Bye... Bye

Expensive...

There are some excellent notation programs available like Sibelius

http://www.sibelius.com/

although they will set you back a fair wack, try and put it on the churches expense account, hehe... You may want to have a look around some of the shareware on this site for some ideas. I'm sure you'll find something in there

Problems with EZ CD Creator and Burning

Anyone know how to install a CDRW burner for pC and also how to troubleshoot EZ CD Creator 4 problems?

Re: Problems with EZ CD Creator and Burning

I recently got help for EZ CD from the website: http://www.adaptec.com/support/overview/cdrec.html
You didn't say what name brand your CD burner is, but if you haven't already done it, check to see if the company has a website where you can receive technical help.

.....

Does that mean that the interface isn't working? I have a Mac G4 running Logic Audio synced to a Roland VS880 which I can tell you how to do although I don't know either your Cakewalk software or you means of addressing it from cakewalk. When you need help with the former then get back to me.

I WANT FREE SOFTWARE

Does Anyone know where I can download a FREE FULL VERSION of either Encore or Sibelius?
Please let me know if you do.
The prices in New Zealand are quite expensive for Music Notation Software, and I don't really wish to fork out a huge amount of money to buy it.
So please let me know where I can get a FULL, FREE VERSION of either Encore or Sibelius
Thanks.

There are no free full versions - only demos.

I can't afford to drive a BMW - I'd like to but I
don't have the money - I also don't go out and steal
one and that sounds exactly like what you're trying
to do here.

This is an open forum and a lot of software developers
and copyright enforcement agencies come here -
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/wwwboard/warning.shtml">you have been warned</a>.

But all is not lost, there are cheaper shareware
alternatives which you can download from this site,
check out the software listings at
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/NOTATION/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/NOTATION/</a>

Some are also completely free - look for the ones
listed as "Freeware".

The conversion of major currencies into our local South African "geld" makes the aquisition of top line software extremely expensive and in the majority of cases unobtainable.

TO all those who replied to I WANT FREE SOFTWARE

Ahhh, dudes,
I don't wish to steal it, but I take your points. Note I said FREE not steal. You cannot steal anything free, but I kind of would be breaching the copyright laws, so I won't steal it.
Demos will do for now.
Sorry to Neil if notation software is unobtainable in South Africa but I can't do anything about that.

And on a completely different note, how come you lot are so damn touchy?

By the Way Jason BMW's suck compared to Subaru's
You can't exactly download one of those, but you obviously can't download what I was looking for either.

sick of 128 choices of voices

I'm currently a amature home studio 9 user. I'm sick of my limited choices of 128 voices. While reading an electronic keyboard magazine I learned of the XG Yahama products resulting in over 400 new voices. I went to the Yahamasynth.com website and learned of plug in's. I generate with an old roland D-5 so these plug in's do me no good,as I understand you need the Yahama keyboard with the expansion slot to use these. Where can I go from here to expand my voice capabilities? What kind of dollars are we talking? If anyone can get me started in this search I'd appreciate it. Thanx.
