: I am learning how to record my voice and guitar onto my computer and then burn it onto a CDR. I want to get a mic. And I don't know much about them. What are Unidirectional and Omnidirectional mics? And how exactly do they connect to my computer? Also what are the best and most inexpensive brands?

There are too main types of Microphones. Dynamic and Capacitor (condensor). The dynamics are lesa accurate and generally more hard waring. This means they are usually used for live sounds. Condensor Mics represent the best quality reproduction and are usually a lot more expensive. They also require a seperate power supply called {Phantom Power}. Most mixing desks these days provide phantom power (48Volts Dc) for use with condensor Mic's. Dynamic mixs DON'T require any external power.

If you value the sound that your voice and guitar makes then I would spend as much as you can on a Condensor mic. If you plan on taking the mic to a live gig then I wouldn't bother as a condensor mic doesn't like to travel (OR be dropped). Because they are also very sensitive, it will more than likely feedback a lot with a PA unless you know exactly what you are doing and then it's hardly suitable for most situations. A dynamic mic is the answer for live sound but loses out to the condensor in the studio at creating that Pro-Sound.

I bought a Rode NT2 large diaphragm condensor mic a few months back and can't believe I haven't bought one before. The reason is more than likely because they have always been very expensive. The good news is that there are some very respected Mic companies battling with prices of large diaphragm condensors at the Rode NT2 price. I bought mine in England for £299 which I think was a steal. You could look at Audio Technica or AKG at similar prices, don't have the exact numbers to hand though, sorry.

If you opt for a dynamic, then you will be compromising the quality of your recordings unless you get one suitable for your voice. Almost all vocal mics will be happy with the frequency of a guitar and others instruments too. Make sure that it is best for your voice rather than the guitar.

Omni-directional and UniDirectional are known as Polar Patterns. If you look at the symbol on a microphone it will show the sensitivity pattern of the microphone. Look at the symbol and imagine you are looking at the microphone plan view. With a cardioid polar pattern, it will have a little dip in the pattern meaning that the back of the microphone is the least sensitive part. Omni directional is sensitive in all areas and will have a polar pattern in the shape of a circle. Cardioid is the most used with hypercardioid being favoured by many vocalists although. Cardioid will do for you.

Dynamic Mics: Check out Beyer Dynamic and Akg. Also, EV (electrovoice) make an excellent Unidynium mic range. Shure SM58's are cheap and okay, especially for live work as they are durable. Sm57's are sharper sounding and cheaper but maybe a little brash.

Last tip. Try some at a shop. Listen to the difference in sound carefully as it will shape everything you hear in your recordings. DON'T cheap out on an important mic... Enough said
