Turntable to PC connection

I just purchased a used turntable with stereo plugs and a ground wire. What do I need to purchase to plug this turntable into the sound card of my PC?

It's easy...

The cheapest way is to buy an old duffer of an amp that used to be classed as reasonable quality. Plug the Record player into the phono input and then grab a record output from one of the 'tape' busses. Plug that into your computer and your away.

Because a lot of Amp manufacturers have ommited a phono input stage on their amps, you can buy a phono to line convertor from most Hi-Fi shops. Don't spend tons on an audiophile level one, just get a good brand at a good price, that will do 99.9% of us.

The likelyhood is you have an Amp with a phono stage otherwise you wouldn't be able to play your records...!

If you want to get music onto your computer
from vinyl, your best bet is a standalone
CD recorder. Prices start at around $300-$400
(for a Philips consumer model), but if you
pay around $500-$700 for a Tascam professional
CD recorder, like the CD-RW2000, you'll get
a very clean copy onto CD. Then you can just
play or 'rip' the CD to a .wav file on you
PC (with any reasonably new CD-ROM drive).

But the output from your turntable is probably
not at 'line' level. (Its probably about 1000
times too quiet : phono output level.) So you
need a phono-amplifier. A lot of home amplifiers
(but not all anymore) have a 'phono stage' or
record/phono as one of the inputs. Get one of
these, wire up the record player to it, and
connect the CD recorder like a tape deck that
you want to record to.

Any amplifier over $200, like a Kenwood, would do.

Or, you could use a DJ mixer (which takes in
a record player signal and puts out 'line out'
from the master output.) But you won't have any
speakers to check what is being recorded. So
get some headphones. I use a Numark DM1200
mixer ($200 at Sam Ash, Mars Music or similar
on-line store.)

There are a lot better mixers, but this is good
enough for me to make CDs I can DJ live in a
club.

(Now this 'aint a cheap solution, but it'll
do you records justice.)

Midi following software

I am looking for something that you can put in an entire midi song (With piano and accompaniment for an example) and when you performer it live the pianist would play the track with the feeling and jumps as required and the other tracks would follow. I had seen a product by Cakewalk (In Concert) that was supposed to be able to do this but... It doesn't seem to be available anymore and the version of the product that I had I can't seem make work as promised. Anyway, is there anything similar or is there any other suggestions on how to make a midi track used in live performance more flexible. A well done midi file of a score is GREAT as a "canned" Karaoke type of back-up tape but it is still “canned” and not really something that I would really want to use for a live theatrical performance but it is a huge step above a backup tape and a lot cheaper than an orchastra…

Audio sampling software????

Hi all,

This is a nice board! I'm wonderring what you all would suggest as a more sophisticated replacement for the windows audio recorder. Windows recorder does what I want it to do however it is limited to 60 seconds. I want a sampler that is not time limited.

Best suggestions?

Regards,

Adam

Mp3 file help.

I need some help!1 AHHH!! I have two computers. All my mp3's are on my old computer, which I blew out the modem. I want to transfer them to my new computer, but I can't get the files compressed enough to fit on a floppy disk. I have WinZip on both computers, but with that I still can't get the files small enough. Any suggestions, email me!

Network...

Do both of your computers have ethernet?? if this is the case, then you could set up a small network with an 'Ethernet crossover cable" connecting the two computers. If the network is 10/100 base ethernet, then it will take no more than a couple of seconds per 5 meg Mp3.

Other than that, it's CD burners, ZIP drives (if you have to...) or any other storage system less archaic than the crappy and virtually unuseable, floppy drive.

If the modem is gone in the first computer, then maybe you could rip the one out of the other and then pop it in the one with the Mp3's. Get yourself a 50meg or 100 meg 'Free' online drive and then upload them all. It will take some time so if you have to pay for your calls, (why does anyone bother anymore I don't know) so think about how much it will cost.

Borrow an external CD burner. Some people have them although most are sadly hidden away inside a computer so you can't tell how naff they are.... ;0)

Good Luck...

Steve...R

Re: Network...

Thanks for the tips. Sadly, I have no ethernet hookup and both computers are laptops so I can't take the modem. I guess I have to suck it up and redownload from Napster or some other source.

sarah:)

Mac laptops??

Sarah,

They're not Mac laptops are they. If they are, you may have firewire ports which means you can link the machines together with a firewire cable and exhange files at lighting speed. Worth a mention..>!

Re: TuneSpark CDMaker

It can record WMA files directly to CD but it doesn't work with RA files.

It's best not to record streaming audio direct to CD because you can get glitches in the streaming audio.

The best way is to recording the streaming audio to disk first then burn to CD - the best program for the job in my opinion is Total Recorder.

MIDI Drivers???

I'm looking for a good midi driver for my PC. I'm using Pro Tools Free for recording and using a Yamaha PSR-530 keyboard for my midi device.
Trouble is I can only access the 128 general midi patches from my keyboard. I think the right midi driver will enable me to access the other patches but I don't know what one would be the best choice.
Thanks.

Re:

Goto the site of your soundcard & download the latest drivers. 128 Is your soundcards limit.
Do it my way:
Work Harder, buy a better soundcard & a good rack synth.
Most pro Soundcards can be connected with duplicates & multiply the available channels...

Anybody know how to get Winamp to scroll CD text?

Hi.. If you make MP3 or Midi files with a long title...Your Name, song title, ransom notes etc.. they will scroll while the file is playing. If you write text files to a CD and you have a Cd player that reads them... they will do likewise.. but such CD's won't scroll text in Winamp or Sonique.. anybody have a means to accomplish this.. or how to write them on the CD so that these players will scroll the text.. thanks for any comment.

Help Needed!!

Hi, just wondering if there is a program out there that will take an audio sample, for example a beat from a record, and convert into midi. I have an MC-505 and i was just wondering this because the pitch control on the MC is rather difficult to use. The roland DJ2000 has this built in also. Anyways, thanks for you help....

You can sort of do this but not really.

Here are some programs you can try but bear in mind that the results will vary depending upon how many instruments are in the audio sample and how distinct the beats are...

music online

Here's an interesting program where you can download music for free. The artists on this program are paid everytime we get music from them. It's lauching this summer with already an impressive list of independent labels and artists backing it up. Check for it at www.flipr.com
