Help Please??

I need to make wav files from a CD, then make them small enough to upload onto a website. How do I do this without loosing sound quality? Some please help??????

Re: Help Please??

You need to start with a <a href="/smm/cat/CD_RIPPERS/">CD Ripper</a> to record the CDA files on your audio CD to WAV format on your computer.

Now, making a WAV file smaller in file size is in effect compressing it, and any form of compression (unless in an archive format like a ZIP file) will reduce the sound quality by differing levels.

You could go with MP3, Windows Media Audio or RealAudio. The resulting audio quality is determined by the amount of compression applied, ie. the lower the sample rate the lower the sound quality. 128kps MP3 will sound very close to CD quality and its file size would be about 1.5 MB per minute of audio (roughly).

You'll find heaps of info on this website and on <a href="http://www.mp3machine.com/">MP3Machine</a>. Just browse your way around!

Sound Cards Troubleshooting

I removed my sound card to install a new video card, I
know that I plug into my CD Rom with one connection,
but stupidly did't look to see where I unplugged the
connection to my Motherboard. I'm going nuts with no
sound. I have an Intel PII board. I would appreciate
any assistance, as I have had no luck getting tech.
support from the manufacturer. My sound card is a Az-
tech PCI 338-A3D card. I am begging for help. THANK-
YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the score...

This place has it's benefits but on the whole, you would be better off speaking to people that will know the answer to this...

Chose the PC chat room and let you question fly. The mac forum there is very very well attended and therefore you should assume the same with the PC one and check back often otherwise it's a bugger to find your message..

Not the best person for this but...

There must be somewhere obvious to plug it isn't there? Is it a ribbon cable? Count how many pin holes it's got and then locate somewhere on the motherboard where you think you may have unplugged it and see if the number of pins corresponds. I can't believe it could be that hard to find. Most PCB's have markings beside plugs and sockets, have a close look at the writing around the different available recepticles

Best of luck

Thank's Steve but it has not been an easy task. I
am not totally computer illiterate but I cannot
find an obvious place to plug it. Thanks anyway!

bug in recording with Quartz Audio Master

Hi,
I'm using this program (freeware version) under WinME, all is ok but when I want to record, something goes wrong and I have only to reset PC! (No problem recording with other programs). I'have reinstaled QAM; maked scandisk...: no result!
Can you help me?
Regards from Italy.

Re: bug in recording with Quartz Audio Master

I read in another discussion forum that this may be a conflict with the sound card driver, they said try to get the most updated drivers, or try another sound card. I downloaded the freeware version on to my computer at school and had no problem recording, so it must be the sound cards, or it could be a driver problem with Windows ME, because I am using Windows 2000 at School, and ME at home. If anyone else has anymore info please post it.

Re: bug in recording with Quartz Audio Master

I'm having the same problem, If anyone knows how to fix this please post it.

iMac recording

i have a friend with a Rev A 233 MHz iMac. can you record direct to one of those bad boys, say through the audio-in port? he knows about midi breakout boxes and the like, and is more concerned with recording directly into the machine. i told him that it would be easier to get a newer Mac with firewire than to work through the USB ports with a sieries of adapters. can anyone tell me different? i'd like to know. thanks!

If the iMac has a line input (in the form of a minijack, walkman size) then you can record into the iMac. The quality of the input is useable although if you wanted to record at semi/pro quality, then you would need to purchase a USB audio interface. There are a few including the Roland UA-30 which comes in the form of a small box with analogue and digital inputs/outputs.

Firewire is however much faster which is great for people that want to process audio with many audio ins/outs at the same time. A lot of people are happy with a couple of decent quality inputs and USB is fine for that. Lots of people admit to using the minijack ins/outs of their soundcards and are often happy with the result.

Get yourself an adapter from a tape machine or CD players audio outputs (phono/RCA usually) to the "Stereo Minijack) connector and give it a go.

Check the file area on this site for recording software and multitracking audio and midi software and start creating...

Good luck

midi works, no sound!

I've got a Roland JV30 which I use with a Mac running Logic. All I have to do is turn the local off on the synth and the whole thing works on all channels. Just tried using the synth with Logic Fun on PC and although it shows the midi signals travelling both ways no sound comes out of the keyboard. And yes, I have turned up the volume! This is with Local off. With local on you hear the synth but the programme change info has no effect. Any ideas?

Re: midi works, no sound!

Confused.... ahem... So with Local OFF, does it actually work properly? Most keyboards have a light to indicate that they are receiving Midi Data, is anything flashing when you play some midi from Logic? What Midi interface do you have?? You not using Midi Thru are you?? So many possibilities.. there are a few things to try.

1. Confirm that Midi information is making it to the JV30, there must be a midi light to let you know.

2. If the midi light is not reponding then it isn't recieving midi. You will have to check you midi cables and connections carefully. Also, make sure that Logic is sending midi data out of the correct port. Is it USB or serial??? using OMS???

3. If the midi light is flashing then you may have changed something in the Midi Page or in the Audio configuration of the synth. (I don't know the Jv30 i'm afraid...) It's often worth checking the synth manual and finding out how you do a "factory reset". If you have backed up all your Voices and Performances etc, then you shouldn't have anything to lose.

trance melodies

need some help: ok trying to get a nice trance layer going, but just cant seem to get anywhere with it, have any advice?

Same with most music...

Find a sound that suits the occasion. If it's trance then get yourself into a percussive pattern or a string chord turn around. It's the starting which I find the hard bit too. It's a matter of being in the mood that you are trying to recreate as much as being able to hear what you want before you start making it.

I find it easiest to pick an instrument and try and start something with that. As you add and arrange the instrument, you can often start to hear other sounds and instruments. It's then a matter of adding until you have a passage you like and then arranging that into a song. I usually copy and paste the passage into Logic Audio and then repeat it for ages. Listen to it and the start cutting bits away and adding new parts to create a changing experience. Use your ears and head for what you know and like...

If all else fails. Do what many well knowns do and copy the hell out of everyone. When you get the hang of it, then start to evolve your own style. It's a cop out in some ways, just know when to go your own way, that's all

Best Wishes

mac recording of streaming audio

Is there a program that will record streaming audio to my hard drive on my Macintosh

Try....

MacAmp from subband software.

www.subband.com

It's an all in one MP3 player and Radio streamer. I think you can use it to stream Mp3's from the net as well. It has a record button that will either record an .aif or mp3 directly to a folder.

I think it's still $15 so it's well worth registering.

What is triplet timimg

One of the challengtes of electronic music is to make it sound 'human' and give it a groove. I often hear the tern triplet timimg linked to this but no explanation of what it means. Investigation on the net just gives musical notation, and not knowing my crotchets from my semi quavers, its not much help. I'm guessing that its putting a note/hit on every third measure in a 4 beat bar split into 16 measures. Is this right? Please help, I feel stupid not knowing this.

Humanise...

A long time ago, midi sequencer packages started giving the user the option to Humanise a passage which would randomise velocity and note event timing to give the appearance of the track being played with standard human timing and velocity errors. These days there are Groove Quantise functions as well.

Take for instance Logic Audio.

If I record a basic 4/4 drum riff over 4 bars and then quantise it to 16th's so everything is on the beat... (unless I played it really badly...!). I could then import an Audio file, from a CD say, that has a section of drumming in it that grooves, (lots of jazz albums often suffice...!). Assume we have a section of pure drumming from the start of a song. Logic allows me to analyse this audio passage and it will take from it it's 'Groove'. I can then select "Make DNA groove template" and it will make a quantisation patch that I can apply to a Midi passage.

I can then select my simple drum pattern and apply the groove template I made 'To it' and the drums will groove...!

I have done this on occasion and it does sometimes impress but don't rely on it as it can get confused if the audio is muddy and has background noise

Applying triplet timing to a drum riff to make it sound human is possibly a confusing way to look at this. try out the groove quantises and find the 'Humanise' function that must by now be in most if not all proper midi sequencers and play away...!

Re: What is triplet timimg

You'll find the answer <a href="http://www.drummingweb.com/lessons/lesson5.htm">here</a>. They're not too hard to learn to play on the drums, although they can get pretty complex if you want them to be so.

Re: hello

what??????

I need help with the page layout

I need some help.

I have created a choral arrangement of a hymn (I split it into 4 staves). Everything works great, playback is great. However, each page has the staves separated differently. To explain: On the 1st page there is a nice 1" or so gap between the 1st set of 4 staves and the 2nd set (2 to a page). On the 2nd page there is a huge 3" or 4" gap. On both the 3rd and 4th pages they are too close together.

I have tried to move them closer together using various tools, but not without severly damaging the rest of the piece.

Here is the file for downloading:

http://www.geocities.com/unibodyford/greenhill.zip
(zipped with WinZip 8.0)

Like I said, everything else is great. Just that visually, it looks sloppy.

Anybody have a minute to take a look?

Thanks,

Dan
