I was wondering, I know how to make a note longer in the piano roll but how do u make it hold the note so it actually plays it's whole length instead of just one beat no matter how long it is?

what microphone for recording grammophone records?

I have a HMV cabinet Grammophone player (78 speed records) and I would like to get these recordings onto CD before damage/wear to records. I have a PC and the right burning software. I was thinking of purchasing Total Recorder for the recording of the audio but I need a microphone for connection to soundcard line-in. Not one of those useless little numbers, something that will record half professionally the output of the grammophone horn..

If anyone has tried something like this PLEASE let me know what equipment you used?

muchas gracias

Re: what microphone for recording grammophone records?

Frankly, the PZM from Radio Shack is totally
awesome. I have two I've used for all kinds of things. W/ the addition of a different power supply, it should equal the Crown PZM. Forget expensive mics and multiple mic placings-- use the PZM first-- I bet you'll be totally amazed.

There are...

...two main mic types. Dynamic and Condensor (capacitor). Dynamics are hardy and great for live music, condensors are delicate and need a power supply (48vdc known as Phantom power) which can be supplied by a stand alone unit OR most minor (upwards) mixing desks with proper mic preamps. If you are on a budget but want good quality, then you could go for a battery powered mic often refered to as electret condensors. The cheapest one of these that I know that is worth using is a PZM or boundary mic. These mics were copied in design by tandy (radio shack) and sell for a nominal amount. Despite their price, the quality of reproduction in a non soundproofed room is excellent. You have to find a place of little reverberation in your house to record the record player and play it as loud as it will go without distorting the poor old thing. Mount the PZM on the wall and plug it into a mic input. The mic has a battery inline on the mic lead itself which is usually 1.5vdc batteries (maybe x2, can't remember). These mics got radio shack in trouble as they were much cheaper than the original but similar in quality. I was taught at college that the solution to this was an agreement that they would underpower the mic themselves from the original 9vdc supply down to 1.5 (or 2x 1.5). Everyone at my college had one for their unique room levelling qualities and chopped off the existing battery pack and fixed on a 9vdc supply. The quality improved.

There are other mics to recommend but it's worth trying the PZM out on the strength that taking a PZM back to tandys for a refund is probably easier than taking a U87 back to a mix center. They are cheap too...!

If all else fails, a simple sm58 or maybe an sm57 by shure will get the music onto the computer but don't expect the world. Close mic and keep it out of bouncy rooms with hard surfaces.

TIP: Grab your mattress and up end it. bend it around in a U shape and curtain down the other side. You know have a cheap soundproofed area although small. Fiddly but it worked for me many years ago whilst recording a saxophonist for the first time...

Re:

A more expensive solution would be 2 or more dynamic microphones (all in different places of your grammophone speaker & at least one in a different angle), in order to create the desired space, colour & clarity (the same technique is common to guitar amps micing)...

Re:

Since a medium quality microphone costs more than $400, if you think you can afford it you can see Shure microphones site, or use a search engine for other companies. You can use some of the noise reduction software located on the download section of this site to remove clicks & hum noises...

alrighty then..

So that is how much a good microphone costs then.. errrrrhmmmmm.. if you could so kindly assist me further kozida, in your opinion what standard/quality microphone would be necessary for this type of recording considering like you said there will already be alot of noise and crackle from the records themselves. Audio restoration software would be a must in this case. Don't microphones have different ranges or fields of reception?

Re:

Microphones do have different ranges, you can get some general mic info here:
http://www.dpamicrophones.com/
(It covers both general & particular issues about mics)
For my vinyls I use Diamond cut restoration tools (the new version is called DC-Art Live! in the download section); though you need to be carefull in order not to lose bits of music along with the clicks, it works fine.
After reading the basics about microphones, you could search the net about the mic(s) that suits your needs...

bitheadz phrazer demo manual won't download onto my mac

How come the phrazer manual won't download onto my desktop? I have acrobat but the manual only downloads on my netscpe screen. any help would be much appreciated.

Jason is right although...

it's the option (apple key) and then click on the mac. If you have a right mouse button, then it's the same thing.

Yes Steve - you would think that I would have remembered
to look at the source code of Andrew's message to see if
he was on a Mac, after all I added the code to the message
board program that puts the data there :)

Jason.

Re: bitheadz phrazer demo manual won't download onto my mac

: How come the phrazer manual won't download onto my desktop? I have acrobat but the manual only downloads on my netscpe screen. any help would be much appreciated.

This is because Acrobat works both as a stand-alone
application and as a plug-in for Netscape.

If you click on the link to the .pdf manual as if it
were a link to a web page then it will cause Acrobat
to load the document into Netscape.

Instead what you should do is hold down the 'shift'
key while you click on the link and Netscape will ask
you where you want to save the file.

Once you have downloaded the file to your hard drive
you can then open it directly from Acrobat without it
loading into Netscape.

WHAT'S THIS SONG???

ok, i don't know the artist or the song title, all i know is the chorus of the song which goes "if i sigh then i'm halfway to science, if i try, then i'm halfway to triumph, i'm alive, but i'm halfway to dying, i'm laughing but i'm halfway to crying," it's somewhere in between rock, punk, and ska. i heard it on the radio, and it sounded really familiar, and i really liked it and i'd like to find it and other songs by the artist... if anyone has any input, i'd appreciate it! thanks.....

Re: WHAT'S THIS SONG???

it's called "c'mon" and it's by the rustic overtones...

Re: WHAT'S THIS SONG???

I don't know what this song is called or who sings it but I would love to get it, it is a duet with a guy and girl and they are singing :i just wanna hold you, i just wanna kiss you..."

Emagic-Logic

I cannot seem to figure out how to move audio events in the arrange window of logic other than bar by bar. It seems to be stuck on snap to bar and I cannot get an event to move arbitrarily. Would anyone happen to know?

Re: Emagic-Logic

Hi,
There are several ways.On a apple MAc.
A handy Key command is hold down 'option' key when dragging your piece of audio. If you then hold 'shift' as well it will move in really small increments. If your use a PC just try holding some similar keys down when you drag.
Also on the transport bar, increase the bar increments to max( I think 1/192 or something). There is also a menu option to turn off the snap somewhere.
Hope thats help

Re:

I don't use it, but since it's #4 on the sequencer
top ten it should have a global snap to option, which you could set to 1/32 or other...

is there a website where i can download music software for free?

Coverting Mac to windows

I have a cd made under a Mac system and platform, of rare music, copied under mac onto a cd from tapes. This was done for me by a friend some years ago. I have a windows 98 system and the cd will not play sound. I have taken the cd to a sound engineer who has advised me that it plays well under a mac system. I want to be able to play this on my windows system and also copy the files onto my computer and remix them and enhance them. Is there any converter, that will,
1. play the cd with sound under windows
2. copy the files from the cd onto my hard disk so that I can play them direct off my computer via winamp or such like - this si the problem as I can copy them but they wont play with sound.
3. convert files from mac in windows into mp3
There is nothing wrong with my sound card and the problem very much is that as I dont have a mac platform
and as the cd was done under a mac platform I cant play it or get any sound under windows.
Ccan you help at all - If so I will download and purchase any programme or converter available.
Thank you

What are the files though...

Do you know what the files on the CD are??? I suspect they are .aif files which are virtually identical to .wav files. They could be Mp3's but you say some years ago which suggests that it may have been before the mp3 revolution. I think windows is the same as the mac in the sense that if you change the file extension i.e. xxxxxxxx.aif or xxxxxxxx.wav the computer will consider that this is what the file is. It could be as simple as identifying what the files are by changing their extension. Copy one of the files into and folder and then rename the extension to .wav. You may find this creates a listenable file. Try loading them from inside audio applications as well, like Windows media player.

If all else fails, then tell me what the smallest file size is and if it's not too big, then I will let you send it to me and I will check it out on my mac and let you know the best way to go. Don't just send it though as it might be quite large...

Re: can you copy ps2 games yet?

Jason,

Read and shut the **** up Choir Boy!!

Keep the following in mind when making a backup of an Original Game CD:
You are LEGALLY ALLOWED to make a personal backup of an Original Game CD as long as you are the owner of the Original Game CD.
You are NOT ALLOWED to sell, rent or give away any backups of copyrighted Games CD's, as this is not allowed by Copyright Laws.
You MUST DESTROY any backups when you don't legally own the Original Game CD anymore (e.g. selling or giving it away)
Before making a backup, check in the supplied manual or on the back of the CD, if there are special conditions for making a personal backup.
