Re: Dubbing Cassette Tapes

You don't say how you want them dubbed or copied. Is this tape to cd, tape to internet format? What are you looking for?
Kate W.

: Hello,
:
: I am looking for information regarding professional dubbing of cassette tapes. Can you give me some information on whom to contact to provide this service?
: All the tapes are voice only, mostly lectures and public talks, no music.
: I have around fifty of them, approximately half of them are 60 minute tapes and the other half 90 minutes tapes with one full side recorded and half the other.
: I am looking to make one copy of each.
: Thank you in advance for your kind reply
: and advice regarding this matter.
: Sincerely
: Ms. Thal

Re: Dubbing Cassette Tapes

It's difficult to say because I don't know where you live. However, if you look in the telephone book for
tape duplication services, you should find something.

One thing I should point out is that you may have trouble getting a single copy of each tape. Most
duplication services tend to run multiple copies off a single tape. For what you want, it may turn
out to be quite expensive.

mp3 files are stuck

I have some mp3 files that "get stuck" after I played them. I.e., my computer's mp3-player does not go to the next song on the playlist.

Any ideas how to fix this? Is something missing from these files (they might have been incomplete downloads or conversions).

Thanks!

Production Tips.

I am currently experimenting with computer music to create wave file looped techno songs. I am also delving into the MIDI side.

Has anybody got any tips on the use of EQ (frequency, gain etc) to make songs more interesting to the ear.

I am into techno music but I would also welcome comments from people into other styles of music.

Filter Sweeps?

This is the shiznit:

1. Download Rebirth demo.
2. Play one of the demo songs, but switch it into pattern mode so that the song doesn't play through.
3. Mute one of the synths
4. As a pattern is playing, turn the Cutoff knob (slowly) on the playing synth. This is the rejection frequency of the EQ filter. This is how to make things sound neat using EQ. people don't actually use EQ to make filter sweeps, they use special filters. Why?
5. As the pattern is playing, increase the Resonance knob. This increase the amount of sound re-introduced into the signal.

I'll continue, unless you already know all this.
Big filter sweeps on things like drums and even on the whole songs are very prevalent: stardust "the music sounds better with you" and daft punk's "one more time" spring to mind.

Also, a low pass filter sounds awesome on pad lines. Start with just the low frequencies coming through, and VERY SLOWLY open the filter to let the whole pad through. This is standard techno fare.

I could go on and on about all of the various plugins ect but (as already mentioned by Steve)you definatly have to keep refering to reference material cos your ears will fool you.
After each adjustment it only takes a few seconds to compare your music with something in the same vein. Your not "copying" them, your just making sure your mix is of the same quality(or better!)than theirs!

Thanx for replying.

I was thinking that myself.

Thanx to all who replied.

The trick..

...to production is to hear what you want, before you can actually hear it. This is a tricky way to work but all the best songwriters and producers have a view on what they want to hear. A good way to start is to have a CD of similar music on standby and reference your song with a professionally recorded piece.

Eq is a tricky one and most people can mess up a mix in no time using Eq. It's an individual art that is learnt by fiddling. The basic rule is, don't over do it unless you know what you are doing. I make some massive eq adjustments at times although I generally have an idea of what I want to hear and those sorts of adjustments are done from experience. If your starting off, then make adjustments of +/- 2db at a time. Apply this thinking to all of the instruments and then listen to what it sounds like.

A compressor on the final mix may make the whole song sound like you wanted it to so try out some compressors during the mixing.

Re: Production Tips.

You'll have to experiment yourself with the different frequencies to make the sound interesting to YOUR ears... I don't want to even begin telling you what sounds good, but anyway, depending on the software you're using, it'll be either a lot easier or a lot harder to mess around with frequencies to find the sound you want... lows and mids for a more ambient feel (good for reverb) or highs for a more energetic mood. It's really all up to you...

16 - 24 or 32 bit

I don't know what's mean in a wav file work at 16, 24, or 32 bit

Re: 16 - 24 or 32 bit

The bit resolution is the number of discrete amplitudes at which a sample can exist. It is measured as a power of 2, I believe as 2 to the power of n-1.

Waves have amplitudes that vary over time. Amplitude is the distance from flat. In real life, the amplitude can be anything, but a computer must limit the size of the amplitude to discrete values, say +1, +2, +3, +4, -1, -2, -3 etc. When you increase the number of bits, it can capture amplitudes between +1 and +2.

The Hz value is the number of amplitude samples taken in a second and really has no bearing on bit resolution. However, when 1 increases, most maufacturers increase the other as well to give you more reason to buy their product.

Re:

Roughly, the ammount of bits of data that are transfered on a given time, & therefore adjust the quality of digital music.
16 bit is used in CD quality, 24 & 32 in digital recording studios (which after mixdown is pulled down to 16 bit to produce commercial CDs -the clarity & the wide spectrum of equalization is easily distinguished on those CDs that use higher bitrates)
Another factor is Hz 44.1, 48, 96.
It's about cycles; the more cycles a digital recording device is allowed the more digital information comes in (proper analogue to digital convertion demands 96 Hz use to obtain reference recordings).
The higher the numbers the more Kbytes the wavs occupy.
SuperCD (sony) would be (hopefully) the first mass produced media that could provide reference recordings of the highest quality possible today.

mighty mouse, where are you?

hi boys.

q. of the day: i have borrowed HP's m820e cd-writer
and am trying to hook it up to a desktop pc
with win 98, through an Adaptec AHA-2940UW PCI SCSI
adapter host. what do i do? i get absolutely
zero response from the silly machine. no
cd-writer listed anywhere. and no, www.hp.com is
no help, nor www.adaptec.com.

who knows what i should do? new drivers??

Re:

Possible solutions:
The CD-R is connected at the end of a SCSI chain but the previous device is terminated, so you need to remove previous device's termination tag, add it to last device of the chain & wintoes would recognise it at logon.

Start/Control Panel/System/Device Manager/SCSI Controller see the Adaptec? If not run the adaptec CD for the drivers.

Adaptec's Site HAS the drivers if you don't have the CD...

Burning Karaoke CDs

When I burn karaoke CDs on my Philips CD burner, everything goes as planned, but when I put the burned CD in the karaoke player, I can hear the music but i can't see the words on the screen. I use the Adaptec Easy CD creator to burn CDs. Do I need new software or hardware? What can I do to solve this problem and properly burn the graphics files onto the CD? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Re: Burning Karaoke CDs

The problem isn't with your program or burner, the problem is that with that program and burner they do not read or burn the sub-codes in a cdg, that is why you get music but no words. You need to have a Plexwriter cd burner about $200.00 and the cdrwin program from goldenhawk.com then you will be able to burn away, hope this helps.

Re: Burning Karaoke CDs

What stores can you buy a Plexwriter cd burner at. i seen a couple of places online but i was wondering if any stores carry it. i live in St. Joseph, Mo i doubt there is any here but i was hoping there was a place in Kansas City that would sale them

Re: Burning Karaoke CDs/CDGs

Any new info on burning CDGs? Anything would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone would like to swap CDG songs, my current library includes over 3,000 titles, so let me know... i'm always looking to expand!
Thanks!!

Ross,
Making CD+G back-ups is what I got a burner for and since March, I've learned a couple things. I've made over 300 perfect copies so I'll tell you what worked for me. EZ CD Creator is not going to do the job. My personal opinion re: cracks is forget it. If you're serious about duplicating those Expensive CD+G's go to mtu.com and see if your burner is supported by them. They have a trial version that is easy to use, and the site is dedicated to Karaoke. Another good site is burningissues. And you don't need to send me any CDG"s in return for the info. Best of luck.

Your burner doesnt support writing in the subchannels required to burn a CD+g bin file... use a Yamaha (any model) or a high end Plexor to do this the best. If it doesn't say that the format is supported in the manual, it most likely is not. good luck

: Try using the program Clone CD. You get it off the website for about $25. It works perfectly for me and I had a similar problem with my burner. There is a trial version for download for about 21 days, so you can test it before you buy.

Re: Burning Karaoke CDs

Easy CD Creator supports CD+ (Text Information) that is utilised by karaoke. You should check if your Philips CD-R supports this function as well on the Easy CD creator menus.
Check Adaptec's Site for more info...

Yes... Easy CD Creator supports CD+ (Text Information) but that is NOT what karaoke uses. The karaoke format is CD+G (or CD+Graphics) but in computer burning terms, the type of burner you want, has to be able to burn subchannel data. Ive done a lot of research on this. Here is a list of burners that were tested and proven to burn karaoke. this is from www.goldenhawk.com which has a burning software available to download from that site. I ~dont~ suggest you download it. i did and didnt like it at all. it is a restricted demo that only lets you burn at 1x until you fork over the $. i just didnt like the program alltogether. the 1x didnt bother me but it was the program i didnt like. you can use ANY exact copy burning software as long as burns an exact "disk to disk" copy (cd to burner) or a disk to image then image to disk copy. if you dont have this, you dont have nothing, anyway the following have been tested for burning karaoke CDGs:

To backup CD+G discs, you must have one of the following recorders...

Hewlett Packard 7500 / 8100 / 8200 / 9100 / 9200
Panasonic CW-7501
Plasmon CDR4240
Plextor PX-R412C (must have firmware version 1.07)
Plextor PX-R820T / PX-W4220T / PX-W8220T)
Sony CRX100E / CRX110E / CRX120E / CRX140E / CRX140S
Yamaha All Models
All of the above recorders (except the Yamaha CDR100/CDR102, CW-7501, and CDR4240) are capable of both reading and writing CD+G discs. If you do not have a model that can read CD+G, then you will have to purchase a separate CDROM drive that has this capability.

The following CDROM drives are supported for reading CD+G discs...

Plextor 4Plex Plus
Plextor 8Plex (not recommended)
Plextor 12Plex
Plextor 12/20Plex
Plextor 14/32Plex
Sony 76S (not recommended)
Sony 415 (only works well at 1x reading speed)

7/8 of these burners are scsi and require big bucks. if any ide are supported, the graphics are almost always distorted.(in easier terms... if the burner is ide, your picture quality is gonna be really bad and even though scsi burners cost twice as much and require a scsi adapter which is costly, the quality is so much better.aka crystal clear~ some ide you cant even read they are so bad.). if you have no idea what im talking about, which is normal, go to a computer store and ask them tons of questions~ dont heasitate~ and ask them about burning subchannel data.

burning CDGs for cash is ILLEGAL do NOT use this helpful information for ILLEGAL pourpses :)

a good burning software for cdg that is easy to use is clone cd. you can get it from http://www.elby.de/CloneCD/english/
its NOT too hard to use and has some awsome features. as far as i know, clone cd supports the above listed burners.

Umm, that is all i can think of~ im getting kicked off the computer so bye.

PS there is a program out called SCSIRO it reads any CDG from your CDROM or burner. its like a computer CD player, but it displays the karaoke graphics as if your computer was a expensive karaoke machine. ive tried ALL of the others. this is my favorite. the only disadvantage is that your cdrom or burner has to be able to read karaoke and has to be SCSI. i havent tried it on ide but SCSIRO stands for SCSI Read Only.

OMS 2.1

I 'm a french guy and I'm looking for download OMS 2.1 for Pro tool Free

The mac version made it to 2.3.7 I think...

But you don't mention the computer you have... It's not hard to find. Go to a search engine like www.google.com and type in OMS download and you will find...

Steve....R

Re: The mac version made it to 2.3.7 I think...

Is there a PC version of OMS? I've been looking for one or a similar program for PC and haven't had a lot of luck.

A friend of mine....

....uses hubbies loopback (hubbys (sp)??) which I think is an midi routing program. Check it out...

Opcode, who make (made OMS) has now defunct. I am not sure the reasons for this but I think it had something to do with Gibson buying someone out then letting the side down. The good news for Mac users is that the OMS guru is now working for apple (at last report anyway) so I hope OSX will see some intergrated OMS style routing at some point...
