converting aiff to mp3 and/or how to mix my cassette 4-track int

sorry the subject line is so long. i don't know what is important to ask about.

i've got an analog cassette 4track (fostex x-28h) and a mac g4. i've got the USB-1/8th inch input converter already, so i can get the sounds into the computer. i have a simple "soundrecorder" program that will save to aiff, but once saved i can't get it into itunes to convert, so i don't really know what to do with it. i'd love to know which sound programs are best for me, optimal settings (i.e. should i record in mono or stereo), and how to save the files to eventually burn them onto a cd (i use the standard itunes now, but if i need a function that it doesn't provide, i can switch to another).

thanks for listening

rh

As far as I know...

iTunes burns playlists. They can be either Aiff or Mp3 and it's literally a matter of making a new playlist and then dragging the songs (either format) on to the iTunes playlist window. The burn disk option is then clickable at the top right of the window. Note though that converting them to Mp3 will reduce the quality of the files. The sole reason for Mp3 is to reduce the size of the file to around a tenth of the original at 128kbps. This is great if you are challenged by the size of your HD or if the files are internet bound. or to a CD player that can read Mp3's as audio files.

If your sole purpose is to burn the songs to an audio CD then you are looking at this the wrong way. Leave the Aiff's as is and drag them to iTunes or a similar CDRW burning software, Toast is top... and burn away.

Another thing you could try is actually multitracking the session from the 4 track. Although the 4 track may or may not receive a midi sync signal, you can still do it by simply recording the input on the G4 into an audio sequencer. There are some cheap ones that are worth a try like Cubasis or Logic Audio AV (Logic FUN comes on music magazine CD's free from time to time and will offer you 8 tracks of audio versus the 16 in AV). If you feel flush, then you could go with a larger version which will offer many more tracks and facilities to blow your Fostex into the bottom of the nearest drawer...! Lining the tracks up afterwards is childs play as is adding fx...

How to convert WAV and MP3 to MIDI FOR NOKIA MOBILE PHONE

Re: HELP-How to convert WAV & MP3 to MIDI FOR NOKIA MOBIL PHONE

As I haven't tried this download myself I cannot vouch for how well it will work, if at all. But you will lose nothing by giving it a go:
IntelliScore Polyphonic - Realtime polyphonic mp3 and wav to midi converter

Others:
Digital Ear - Convert Audio (.wav) files to MIDI
NOKIA COMPOSER 2000 - Compose ring tones for you Nokia mobile phone

: How to convert WAV and MP3 to MIDI FOR NOKIA MOBILE PHONE

Re: HELP-How to convert WAV & MP3 to MIDI FOR NOKIA MOBIL PHONE

You can't convert WAV or MP3 ro MIDI, simply because the data isn't there. A MIDI file contains information on which notes are played and which instrument is used to play it. This information is lost when the MIDI file is converted to a stereo track.

Sounds like..

....a questions of quality of hardware. You neglected to tell us what equipment you use which makes it oh so hard for a serious answer. The high pitched noise is more than likely interference due to cheap soundcards and bad microphone or transformer sheilding. Some computers were never designed for audio recording and have badly insulated transformers and low end sound hardware. The best idea is to move the mic way away from the computer when recording and use a proper audio card. Using USB and Firewire has benefits as the A/D convertion occurs away from the computer which should reduce noise. USB is slow though and only allows for a minimal amount of simultaneous tracks for recording and playback. Firewire doesn't suffer the same problems although most of the audio solutions available today for firewire are expensive.

Good audio card with proper Mic pre-amps and a decent mic with decent mic cable should sort the problem...

Is there cool stuff out there ?

I have my system running around a fairly quick PC using Cubasis VST and Recycle Lite.. Its all quite basic, but its not too bad. I'm making Hip Hop, Drum 'n' Bass type tunes, and wondered if anyone knows of any applications, or programs out there that might be useful. Maybe some free stuff at a website or anything like that - maybe a dedicated bass or drum software ?? I know theres some good stuff here on this site, but I'm a little clueless as to what is good and what isnt - or what I might need - Hope someone can answer this very vague question !! Thanks anyone

Re: Is there cool stuff out there ?

I don't think you're gonna find a site better than this one. You really have to work out for yourself what's good and what isn't. Everyone's a ^$^$^ing expert these days.

Rubberduck is pretty good and this site has a drum section. Don't be lazy. Check it out.

Information

I have a collection of over 1,000 + albums, 0ver 300 '45's, many tapes and many CD's. I love to burn down music that , these days seem to get lost with the CD format. There is music out there that will never be heard again. How can one find CD quality recordings of these songs that no longer exist due to Money gabbing CD producing Fat Cats? The music is there...my quality of music is well preserved. We seem to be going for the big buck.. lotsa filler crap.for a 1 - 2 song expensive CD / Album. Napster had a great idea..yes the Artisits should be compensated. How many bleeding copies of LP's / CD's / Tapes of the same material does one have to puchase? Technology is great ! But there is music out there that...perhaps no one wants to her. ( I doubt that ) but there is some music out there that will never see the day of light ....and it is GOOD...NOT FILLER CRAP....Just my opinion.. Man, I still have original Rock n' Roll music, that everyone loves to hear.....and the LP's are in excellent condition. Whaz Up People?....I'm only 48......listening to some mighty fine stuff... I realize everything changes...Lets not forget some trully excellent tunes. That's just my opinion. Would appreciate a response. Positive hopefully. So we puchase a song no longer available on CD format.Due to todays technology, we should have the freedom of rights, to burn down our own personal copies for our own use.......no only on TV call 1 - 800- #'s , Visa only trips.Well thanks for listening, have a Good Day..........Paul

Re: Information

I agree with you, man. My dad kept his vinyl in great nick. So did my mum. There's heaps of great deleted music from the 60s and the 70s in their collection. They're good people - honest and fair - but they'll be damned if they will fork over the $ for a remastered version of an album they already have just because it's now available on CD.

EARN A WHOLE LOT OF QUICK CASH> UP TO $50 000 in a couple of we

**HOW TO MAKE QUICK CASH IN WEEKS FOR ONLY $6.00!!!**

IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off, it is decent; it's legal; and it is virtually no risk - it really works!! If all the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends. PLEASE NOTE:
Please follow the directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and
integrity of the participants.

STEP one: Get six separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 U.S. $1.00 bills and place ONE inside of EACH of the six pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the six envelopes and seal them. You now should have six sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What you are doing is creating a service.

Mail the six envelopes to the following addresses:

1)Isaiah Cross, 994 west Kendall, Corona, CA 91720

2)R.I. De Tienne, 516 36th st., Newport Beach, CA 92663

3)Ransom Bishop, Rt 1 Box 204, Amoret, MO 64722

4)Dennis Ribble, RR3 Box 32-1B, BENTON, PA 17814

5)Mark Cornell 5690 Louisville Rd. Lot# 187 Bowling Green KY. 42101

6)BRIAN ADAMS
Box 482
Mitchell, Ontario, Canada
N0K 1N0

STEP two: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (six becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, and etc.) and add YOUR NAME as number 6 on the list.

STEP three: Now post your amended article to at least 200 news groups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200.

PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to directions. Look at it this way. If you were of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will come your way.

DIRECTIONS FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWS GROUPS!!

STEP one: Put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's memory.

STEP two: Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into the notepad so that you will add your name to the list.

STEP three: Save your new notepad file as a txt. File. If you want to do your posting in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.

STEP four: Try searching for various new groups (on- line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)

STEP five: Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done. You're done with your first one!!
All you have to do is jump news groups and post away.

***REMEMBER THE MORE NEWS GROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200***

That's it!! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days!!***JUST MAKE SURE ALL ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT***

People have said, "What if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money?" What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest people who are joining every day and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual Internet. Remember, play FAIRLY AND HONESTLY and this will really work.

THANKS

speeding up dig. audio gradually w/out pitch change

Hello, I have a passage of a song that I'm recording that I want to speed up - gradually - with no change in pitch. Of the digital audio programs I use, Logic 4.7 & Peak are both capable of changing the tempo, but not in a CONTINUOUS way. The effect I'm after is akin to those 60's recordings where it sounds as if an lp is being spun faster & faster till the sound squeaks into oblivion. The sound I want is similar, except I want to maintain the pitch as it speeds away. At this point the only thing I can figure to do with what I've got is to cut a section the music into little chunks, speed them up in Logic or Peak and then paste them all back together. This is a very difficult route and still won't quite achieve what I'm after. Even the programs like "Transcribe!" whose whole reason for existence is about changing speed w/out changing pitch don't seem be to set up for a continuous playback that gradually increases the speed. My thought is that if I could put the passage of music in some sort of program that does do that I could perhaps do it manually (with something like the "speed bar" in "Transcribe!") and record externally to a DAT machine. Anyway, at this point I'm stumped!
Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks,

Corbin

Answer!

Hello Corbin,

OKay that's easy. Buy a voltage regualator connected to a tape recorder. Slightly reduce the the voltage to 66% and begin recording. When you play it back at normal speeds it will be 300% faster speed w/out changing the pitch to the normal "donald duck" voice.

There is a track by...

Fat boy slim although I don't recall the name. They exactly what you are looking to do on that track. Funk soul brother is a lyric although I don't know if it's the name of the track... Check it out..

I 'know' that the engineer used a program called Hyperprism on the Mac to do this. I have an old version that gets used occasionally although the suite of software is stunning. The idea is that it lets you draw on the screen in real time with the music the effect you wish to achieve. This can be everything from Delay and ambience to time stretching and it's more than impressive even on an old mac. Hyperprism is what you are searching for...
