2. i have a technics keyboard which i have connected to soundcard (using both in&out jacks on the keyboard) but does not actually control any of the above-mentioned synths.. how do i set up midi controller?

Midi Interface???

Hi, I've got an Apple Macintosh PowerBook G3 Processor

And a Yamaha PSR-630

can I connect these to up,,, and if so what extra stuff do i need....

some people have spoken to me about Midi interface .... what is that?

i hope someone can help!!!

thanks a lot!!!

FRED

I've got MidiMan cheap!! Plus cables, mics, etc....

Hey, Fred--
Once you figure out what it is you want to be using,
email me your list, and I promise I will save you
tons of $$. I sold my store and have left over
NEW inventory. Even the cables you'll need are
pretty pricey, so let me know. I've got one MidiMan
interface left, for MAC.

Hope to hear from you--
Guitar Mama

Midi...

I have used the MidMan Midi sport 2 x2 USB interface on a mac for some time with no problems so I recommend it. You could go for the cheaper 1 x 1 interface as you have only the one midi device. If the price between the two is small then it might be worth considering the 2 in 2 out version.

Midi interfaces are a link between midi devices. A computer midi interface will provide you with a means to connect your computer to midi devices so the can communicate. If you run a midi sequencer on your Powerbook it will talk to the Yamaha. This means you could play the yamaha and record the information on the computers sequencer which will then play it back for you.

It's a big wide musical world out there so you will need to read up on midi and multitimbral synth modes to get you started. Don't be scared to learn as you have the makings of a reasonable synth and audio based studio already. You just have to learn how it fits together... Keep in touch and we will sort you out.... ;0))

Advice needed! Reward offered!

Sorry, No Reward! I'm too poor to give rewards! Maybe I can help out with samples though! I'm interested in putting together some Danceable Grooves! I play percussion and guitar along with a little Didjeridoo and odds and ends. Mainly I want something to edit and clean up samples and something to trigger them with in Real-Time. The main problem? I need them small(no memory or HD space) and Free(or Cheap in a pinch!) Anyone have any recomendations? Much Appreciated.
Nadim

get a cheap ext hd storage

Hey, Nadim--
Why don't you buy one of my ezflyer 230MB external
hard drive data storage units. This just sits out-
side your mainframe (like a zip-drive) and can store
just your music, or whatever you want. That's what
my customers liked to use when they needed space or
just someplace to store music only. I have two left.
My sticker says retail is $119, but I'd sell them
for $45 each. Let me know at guitarmama@usa.net.

Using PC Live Recording Edit To CD

Hello!
I am interested in getting info about-
Using my PC (at various locations like Churches); to
make Live Recordings to PC and Edit at a quality level
and establishing a market for "Small Church Community."

Can you tell me what is best Musical package that can
provide this service?
I am not wealthy, but adventurious, enough to attempt to
do this.
Also, with whatever equipment you do list, what is the best way to be trained on this?

Awaiting,
Rev.DRF

Mic's

As andy said, two good microphones go a long way in a church. If you are recording a choir or such, then all you need is a good placement of two condensor mics, preferably. There are a bunch of different ways of mic'ing sound sources that are considered to 'mix themselves', like choirs and orchestras. If you have a soloist, then include a third microphone for them as this can make the odds in the final mix.

If you had a cardiod (re. mic polor patterns) and a figure of 8 polar pattern then you can point the cardioid at the sound source and then position the figure of 8 mic behind the cardioid mic with the figure of 8 polar pattern pointing left and right. The name of this procedure escapes me but it works a treat in those situations.

At this stage, you can see that a microphone mixer that provides 48vdc (phantom power) and any decent two track mastering tool will do. I have a friend that records string quartets in this way on a professional level and uses two very expensive mic's with a very expensive mic pre-amp and masters to DAT tape. He rarely uses anything else. The final results make it to CD for sale.

I am just trying to plant a seed here as hulking your computer around maybe overkill. This sort of recording is better left to mix itself rather than trying to multitrack everything. A decent 4 track or greater takes preference with me in this situation. If you recorded to DAT or even MiniDisk on a budget, you could import that into the computer when you got home and master it for amplified listening.

Think mic's and stands. Think quality mic preamp (small mackie desk will do though) and a decent two track mixer.

Re: Using PC Live Recording Edit To CD

What sort of quality do you want? If you want to record anything live
that is "decent", then you'll need two good microphones and stands, a PC
that's reliable enough to withstand being transported around, and above
all, a recording environment that is very quiet.

It's not easy, it's rarely cheap and it's not the way I'd recommend, but
but there's nothing stopping you from trying.

convert atari 520stfm notator midi software files to PC

Does anyone know any way of converting old atari 520stfm notator midi music software files to PC land?
Thanks.

Midi files...

It can be done but you have to make sure that the disk they are saved on is in a windows (DOS) readable format. Windows have never made a point of being compatible with other disk formats until more recently and certainly not back in those days. The Atari however made sure that it could read DOS formatted disks although 720k DD for most of the atari machines. If the files were saved as normal midi files rather than notator specific files and on a 720k DOS format disk then it should be readable by a midi sequencer that can import midi files.

If not, then you will need to boot and atari with notator and save the files as standard midi files onto a DOS 720k. I think there is a DOS command for formatting 720k although some of the atari disk software offered this as standard.

Good luck

Steve...R

p.s. also, look out for any windows utilities for converting atari format to DOS format as there is more than likely some somewhere...

I'm developing an harmonizer

I've been working some years on a harmonizer which at the moment does quite well. It can produce choir harmonies from one single voice and even from speech. Since I never heard any digitech or eventide or mackie or whatsoever if not in radio songs, I'd love to hear from you if you know some places on the net where I can download audio demos... You can hear one from me at

Thanks a lot for your attention

Best software for "On the Fly" Burning?

I don't seem to have much luck with copying discs on the fly - 1 in 3 doesn't work and I waste a disc! Just wondering if I need better software - I've got Pent2 233Mhz, 24spd ROM and 4spd Yamaha writer - any software suggestions other than Nero (I can't get it to work!!) that give reliable on the fly copies, at FULL burning speed (4x)?

Re: Best software for "On the Fly" Burning?

On-the-fly burning is problematical at best, even with a
quad speed writer. It's not a problem of the writer itself,
but the rate at which data is fed to it. It sounds as if
you're suffering from buffer underruns (i.e. data isn't
being fed to the writer fast enough).

Two options are : store the data first then copy, or replace
your CD writer with one that has Burnproof technology.

CD Reader too slow?

If the data is not being fed to the writer quick enough, then could it be a problem with the reader being to slow?

What else can you tell me about "burnproof technology"

Cheers,
Spiller.
