Most audio editors (check this sites download area) offer something called "Normalising". This will increase the level of a track to just below digital clipping (distortion to you.. ;0). Do this to all the tracks and the levels should be close enough.

Although this will do you well, if the material you are using has some really sharp mid frequencies to them, they may appear brighter and therefore louder anyway. There is little you can do about this other than employing a series of parametric eq's and a careful ear. You probably wont need to.

I was trying to work out if the Fostex has any midi sync capabilities but it appears it doesn't. If this was the case, you could sync the machine via MTC (midi time code).

The only other way available to you then is to obtain some sort of multitrack program like Cubase or Logic Audio. I have recently posted that Logic Audio FUN was given free on the november 2001 issue or "Computer Music" magazine's front cover CD, This will do eight tracks which may or may not be enough. This will allow editing and mastering with a few Fx as well..

The idea is that you plug the master outputs of the Fostex to the minijack input on the G3 (unless you lucky enough to have an Audio card for better quality although the procedure is the same). Run a multitrack program, Enable a track to record and then select the audio input for that track to the input on your computer/audio card. If you were to start each track in roughly the same place then moving them around after is easy. You can hold down CTRL and move them anywhere you like. Either that, or you can select a track and observe the left most edit box and move a 'delay' amount in real time to line the tracks up perfectly, it's not hard.

Logic Audio AV isn't too expensive and will blow your fostex away with shear facilities and mastering options (as will Logic FUN actually). I still use a Roland VS880 occasionally however, due to it's portable reliability so I can understand your purchase.
