need to convert MIDI files to sheetmusic ASAP

I have written several songs that my daughters wish to sing at Student Convention - they are needing these converted to sheet music form so the judges can see that they are singing correctly. Pray tell are there any such programs that will allow me to save music from my Kurzweil keyboard to floppy disc - and insert the disk into the PC and presto sheet music?? Please say there is... Or if this is not an option what would be the fastest and easiest way to go about this? Thanks in Advance

Re: need to convert MIDI files to sheetmusic ASAP

I believe that Noteworthy software will let you do that. Noteworthy.com - it's about $40 or so to purchase or you can get it on demo for 30 days or so. Good luck!

Alesis qs6

Dear friends,

I'm looking for a technical support in Brazil for Alesis keyboards. The crystal liquid display of my QS6 ins't working well anymore, the information appears with broken letters and some words simply don't appear. A friend told me that the problem would probably be some internal damaged fuses, which should be changed so that the display would work well.
My power supply (original) also presents an anoying noise always when I turn on the keyboard.

Please, any suggestion and explanations about the problem will be helpful.

Thanks.

Re: Alesis qs6

Hi
I have the same problem, please send a e-mail to me if you find out whats wrong with the keyboard.

De-essers?

Does anyone know a piece of de-essing software that actually works?
Of course preferably shareware but commercial product recommendations are also welcomed.

I'm using an Oktava MK-319 mic, a great buy, but the sibilance problem tends to get ghastly.
Especially if one stammers. :-)

How close...

How close are you to the mic when you sing? More to the point, what are you plugging the mic into?

Those MK-319's have had quite a good following, I doubt that the sibilance is all the fault of the mic.

Mic preamps and the like can make a big difference. Tell us a little more about your setup...

Regards

j_

of course not, but there is nothing quite like an oktava that esses like a hiveful of bees. I am willing to admit that my killer scandinavian sibilance is part to blame too.

at the moment I plug the mic to a clean midiman preamp, because all the lower-end tube devices attenuate the problem even further...

I sing very close because I need that intimate dry sound, backing off even, say, 5 inches produce quite a lot of natural reverb even in a dead acoustic environment. this is just why I need a good artificial de-esser. thus the question.

tried out mda, db audioware, plus a couple of other vst stuff. not good enough. I was thinking of Waves, but they do not sell it separately.

notator for Macintosh

Looking for a copy of Notator sequencer program for the mac platform. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you.

sound blaster live! crashes and burns mac g3

no website support links, for this product?
appears, 2nd or 3rd driver to load will crash hard disk
so only restarting w/os-cd, will open the desktop.
'extensions off' will also hang up, if hard disk is used.

Convert RAM to MIDI

Does anyone know how to convert a RAM file to a MIDI file OR know of a notation software package that will let you open a RAM file.

Re: Convert RAM to MIDI

Converting any fully-mixed track into MIDI is virtually impossible, since there
is no way to accurately separate each instrument, and then determine which note
or chord that instrument is playing. Only on tracks which consist of a single
instrument, and even then the best programs aren't 100% accurate. The only
way is to search the net for the song in MIDI format.

instant gratification

...

Where the gear is...

You are very wise to search for this. Yes. There are many standalone CD recorder decks. DENON, SONY, PHILIPS, HHB, FOSTEX, TEAC, MARANTZ, TECHNICS, PIONEER and TASCAM all sell them. Many other companies sell them.

Before you buy, go to a bookstore that sells lots of magazines and look for all of the magazines I mention at the bottom of this message. These magazines specialize in professional audio. Professional audio is what you are looking for, not computer music software.

Expect to pay around 200 to 800 U.S. dollars. Many such CD recorders can also be rented for about 15 to 60 U.S. dollars per 24-48 hours, weekends being the cheapest times.

The easiest one I have used was a TEAC CD recorder with a built in mixer and microphone inputs and digital inputs and outputs. It also had a digital volume controller which allowed fade ins and fade outs. Back in 1999 it was as cheap as 300 U.S. dollars. However, CD recorders aren't as cheap as they ought to be anymore, because most people are buying CD-R drives for their computers. Still, if you look hard enough, you should be able to get one new for about 250 U.S. dollars. Used, you could maybe get one for cheaper if you are lucky. Look on eBay for current international street prices.

Try Musician's Friend, Guitar Center, zZounds, American Musical Supply, Sweetwater, anybody who advertises in Mix Magazine, EQ Magazine, or Electronic Musician Magazine.

Dont worry. It will all work out. Have fun, Tia.

p.s.-any store that specializes in home audio
should be able to help you in person, but
you will be more prepared to deal with them
if you find catalogs and ads first so you
can learn what features are available for
whichever prices.

soundcard

I'm trying to record from a 4-track to my computer. I'm using Creative Soundblaster. When I change the recording device to my soundcard I get a message that says my device does not support this format. Can I change the format or do I need a different soundcard?

You need a better soundcard.

You need to remove your soundcard and uninstall all of it's drivers and delete all of it's remnants that it leaves behind.

After that, you can get an M-Audio Audiophile (24bit 96kHz MIDI-capable full-duplex soundcard) for about 180 dollars.

DONT BELIEVE WHAT THE FOOLS AT BEST BUY OR ANY COMPUTER STORE TELL YOU.

Subscribe to Electronic Musician.
Go to a book store that sells lots of magazines. Browse through Mix magazine for some ads for newer soundcards. You will learn from these ads what is really cutting edge or not.

bullshit 'logical' guy

: DONT BELIEVE WHAT logical guy TELL[S] YOU.

that is the biggest load of crap I have EVER seen LG.

Rick - the soundblaster is a semi-pro level card. Hundreads of thousands of musicians use it. It is full duplex regardless of what lg implies. i use it to make pro quality music. a more expensive card will give u better A/D converters but then it's no secret u get what u pay for.

u need to sort out your drivers. Re-install them + make sure your recording device is setup to use the soundcard properly. u should record in 16bit 44100Khz. btw unless your 4-trak plays back at EXACTLY the same speed each take u will get 'wow+ flutter' + so lose sync over the 4 takes making it a hopeless job.

Don't believe everything you read...

Be very careful who you trust.
One man's poison is another man's pleasure.

But there's an old saying...

"You can't polish a turd."

SoundBlaster cards are strictly CONSUMER, not semipro. ProTools Digi001 is semipro. The M-Audio Audiophile might be considered prosumer, given that 192kHz sound cards are out now. However, it's not so crystal clear, since Mark of the Unicorn (MOTU) and other such companies are making strictly professional cards and breakout boxes with tons of I/O--yet with lower sampling rates or bit resolutions.

It's a game of one-upmanship.

Don't be duped.

hyundai midi (.dat) player

Hyundai premiere 99 plays vcd with karaoke (midi).
Does anybody know if there is a software for my PC
so I can play my hyundai "midi" CD IN MY PC COMPUTER?

Re: hyundai midi (.dat) player

I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure that you can't do that on your PC very easily. You will need to keep scouring the internet. I suggest looking up info about DVD software since DVD players usually can do it all.

recorder/encoder freeware

does any one know of a free programme that you can record using the line in of your soundcard - direct to mp3, for an unlimited length? Musicmatch 6.1 free version could do it this, but has now been updated to 7.0 which cannot. (not the free version anyway). is there another one out there?

Re: recorder/encoder freeware

I'm not sure if there is a freeware download that can do this. With a bit of effort I'm sure you can find 6.1. Or you could look in the MP3 section of this site via the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/">front page</a>.

Micrologic 4.8.1: Lost metronome and note hangs

I recently upgraded Micrologic 4.1.2 to 4.8.1 (first had to upgrade to 4.5). The MIDI metronome no longer works (although the MIDI out message appears in transport window, it is not received by my keyboard). Also, the newer version has a much bigger problem with delays and hanging notes and dyssynchrony between tracks. Anyone else having similar problems? I'm using a Mac G4 running OS 9.2 with plenty of RAM.

Preferences

There is a good chance that it's worth trashing the preference file for the program. It might be called 'Logic Preferences'. I don't know if this will make the difference.

Also, let us know what midi interface you are using. Sometimes it's worth trashing OMS preferences and and sound preferences. NOTE though, this will reset all the settings you have made in those programs.

If you have a USB midi interface, it's worth trashing preferences and then reinstalling the software before rebooting Logic after the preference trashing session.

Check also in Logic to see if the metronome is set to an OMS (or required) channel and if so, which one.

Good Luck

Steve...R

Re: Preferences

Thank you for your suggestions. I am using a MIDIsport 1x1 interface. I trashed my Logic preferences and updated the driver for the MIDI interface. The problem continues. Rather than continue to fight it, I have switched to ProTools free and am experiencing no problems (other than learning a new program!). I emailed eMagic about my problems and never received a reply. I will probably switch to something other than Logic when I upgrade to a "real" sequencer.

Whats the simplest way to record from MD to mac.

I already have an MD player with the digital input for the computer. What is the best way to record from Mini Disc into my computer?

Re: Whats the simplest way to record from MD to mac.

Unless your MD player has a digital OUTPUT, then you can't transfer digitally into your computer. You will just have to record into your computer using the microphone or line input. You can do it in stereo if you get a stereo 1/8" plug to stereo 1/8" plug cord from a store such as Radio Shack. Just make sure that your MD player's volume isn't set too high. Usually 50% volume is about enough. If your MD player has a line output, use that instead of the headphones output.

If you are lucky enough to have an MD player that has a real digital output, then check to see if it is optical or coaxial. Then check if your computer's digital input is optical or coaxial. What you are looking for is called a S/P-DIF connection (Sony/Philips Digital Interchange Format). Look in your MD player manual to learn about how it relates to your player. If your computer has a PCI soundcard, then you just might be in luck. Otherwise, you will need to just do it the simple way using NO digital connection, and just a regular audio connection such as what I mentioned before using the Radio Shack cable.

Actually, that is the easiest way. Either way, you will have to start and stop your recording software for each song. Each song should be saved as a separate file. If you don't have a recording program, you can use SoundHack, which is freeware that can be found online. You will also want to download SoundApp so you can convert file formats.

If you'd like to get an MD player/recorder that has both digital inputs and outputs, try looking on eBay or in pawn shops. Older minidisc recorder decks usually have optical outputs and inputs, but newer models usually only have an optical input. Sony makes some very good models, but the best ones are already rather old. Try contacting Musician's Friend also.

What digital input...?

Do you have an audio interface with an SP.DIF?

All you need is a program like Coaster (I think it's called that). Check the recording software section of this site. There are few options for OS9 and OSX.

can't delete file

After converting the bitrate from several MP3 files - I can't delete change or move the files. Says to make sure the file is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Re: can't delete file

If you are on a PC, you can use the following technique to deal with tricky files...

1) turn off the pc
2) turn on the pc to start in pure DOS mode
3) hold down the control key or whichever key
brings up a menu of startup options during
startup.
4) select DOS-only in text mode.
5) at the DOS prompt, type this:

ATTRIB C:\*.* -r -h -s -a /S

If you use other modifiable drives or partitions than C: , than repeat it for each one substituting D, or whatever for it's letter.

This is a harmless command, but it takes a long time because it acts on every file on your hard drive('s partition).

6) Wait until it is totally done.
7) Turn off the computer.
8) Turn on the computer.

-----------------------------

For a macintosh:

1) shutdown and restart your computer
2) hold down the shift, command, and option keys
at the same time as everything loads.
3) Note that your monitor should show that your
Extensions are not loaded. If not, wait until
it's done loading and shutdown and start over.
4) You should get a dialog box asking if you
want to rebuild the desktop. Be sure to allow
it, but it is safer if extensions are off.
(We held down shift key during startup)
5) Wait for it to complete. This can take a very
very long time, so expect it to take from 5
minutes to an hour, depending on how many
files are on your system.
6) Shutdown and restart your system.
7) If you still can't change your files, you need
to use a special Technical program to manually
set the attributes of your folders and files.
Call somebody who fixes computers for a living
and ask them which FREEWARE technical fix-it
program they reccommend. You might already
own one, but it could be damaged if it's on
your malfunctioning file system.
8) If you have ResEdit 2.1.3 or later, you can
use it to get file info on your troubled
files. This may or may not work, however.
9) Be sure that file sharing settings are set
correctly and that your own privileges are
set high enough.

Good luck...

p.s.-for an older 68k mac or system running system 7.x you could run Norton Utilities and DiskTop. DiskTop is nice because it's a small freeware program that allows you to sort, move,
delete, and edit attributes of files. It's a
desk accessory. It even works on systems thru 9.1.

Live - Vocal enhancing

Please Help.I,m looking for a software program for either Windows or Mac, to use in a live gig. This must have at least 3 part harmonizer as well have a (voice-manipulator) i.e. Gender control etc. Like a digitech voice enhancer unit for stage .Please email me if anyone knows of a product.

Digitech..

I do own something Digitech and it's noisy.

Thing is, I recently saw Brian Eno using a Digitech studio vocalist on stage and it basically does what you want.

I think they are quite cheap used too. Running software on computers in a live environment is often reliable but not as comforting as having the dedicated hardware version.. ;-)
