Editing Software

Does anyone know of a music editing software, where you can slice the layers of a song? Such as; take out the bass or vocals and leave the drums.

I NEED A PROGRAM TO ISOLATE SOUNDS

IS THERE A PROGRAM TO TAKE SONGS APART? LIKE SEPARATE THE VOCALS,BASS,DRUMS,ETC...SO THAT I CAN PUT THEM WHERE I WANT TO..SOMEONE TOLD ME ABOUT SOMETHING CALLED QBASIS BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO FIND THAT...

Re: I NEED A PROGRAM TO ISOLATE SOUNDS

If you have the individual channels or tracks
(bass, drums, guitar, etc..) then you can load
that up in a program like cubase and rearrange ALL
you want. But if what you have in a wave file
or mp3 or something of that sort, then it is
IMPOSSIBLE to do what you are asking, although
some programs claim to be able to seperate the vocals
which do a job far from accurate!

Hope that helps,
Hish

Conversion from pitch to cents

Does anyone know about a software capable
of turning notes in cents?
Thanks

Re: alittle question....

As long as you've got an official version and not a cracked one, the software author would probably be happy to help you out.

band-in-a-box

Hello. I'm looking for some information about this Band-in-a-box for Windows software. Is it really "necessary"? How can I get it the easiest way?
Thank you,
Tancredo

slowing tempo

Is there a shareware program for slowing the tempo
of an mp3 file

Re: slowing tempo

Time stretching is the facility you need. Whether you can find one that works without having to uncompress the Mp3 file would depend on the application. Audio editors have time stretching abilities although you didn't state your computer platform so it's too hard to guide you from here..

DJX BLUES

A friend of mine recently gave me his DJX keyboard. The only problem is he didn't have the manual. I have tried to download a copy of the manual, but was unable to. I even downloaded Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 and I still can't download it. IF SOMEONE COULD PERHAPS EMAIL ME A COPY OF THE DJX MANUAL I WOULD BE ETERNALLY GRATEFUL.

fruity loops event editor/filtering

Hi ppl hopefully u can help me here:
I got a wicked funky techno track in the making - only thing holding me back is that i can't get the effects working properly. I've drawn how i want the effect to change on the editor, but i can't hear it changing when i play the track in song mode - i just see the marker going over the 1st bar of the effects editor over and over. However the effects can be heard on the channel in pattern mode. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: fruity loops event editor/filtering

are u doing the automation as part of the 'main automation' feature? if so have you placed a square in the playlist to startup the main automation sequence?

Re: fruity loops event editor/filtering

That could be it, but how's that done? I'll give it a try now.
Cheerz.

Nero errors

I have been trying to burn a cd of mp3s and have been unsucessful. I always get one of these 2 error messages.
Power calibration error
or
Justlink Activated

If anyone could help I would be grateful.

Thanks

Dongle + Cubase VST 5.1 = trouble

Since I updated Cubase VST 5.0 --> 5.1 the dongle has been really weird. The computer crashes and information is lost, etc. Steinberg have tried to help me, but with no success. I really do need to use Cubase, but the dongle really set me up in trouble.

Does anyone have a tip? Please...

/fredrik

Is it really worth it ?

I really feel for you, my friend. When I had a PC, i discovered over time, with trial and error, that copyright protection schemes tend to cause a lot more trouble than they are worth. Usually data is saved in odd or dangerous ways in the PRAM (parameter RAM, reset by TechTool on Macs), or hidden on an lesser-known part of the hard drive. The hidden hard drive data is particularly dangerous, because it often involves basically LYING to you and the operating system about how much free space is left. Of course, the registry is also modified too, more than likely... and this rampant reliance on essentially a single uberfile for program settings is a nightmarish epidemic amongst PC programs.

Steinberg makes pretty good sounding software, but they aren't so bright about making it efficient. Consider Master Unit. Installing it adds some 100,000 registry entries or so... all for CD-ROM drive support. Given that the average computer only has one or two CD-ROM drives, this is totally redundant and destructive, this adding of dozens or hundreds of driver data to an already delicate and essential file.

If you take the time to really scour the internet for audio freeware, you'll discover that much of the best freeware does not use dongles, installers, VBRUN's, DLL's or registry entries. The best programs are self-contained and simple. Most Macintosh programs are self-contained, and similarly are a bit more stable when it comes programs spreading or NOT spreading their seeds all over your drive. For this reason, most professional recording studios rely upon Macs and NOT PC's to do audio. Furthermore, recording studios can't deal with losing hundreds of dollars of time over some stupid dongle or technical support's lack of knowledge. For that reason, most studios rely upon software from companies with extensively upper-class reputations. ProTools is made by DigiDesign which is a subsidiary of AVID. AVID, of course, is world-famous for their pioneering in video editing workstations. If you consider that Cubase is essentially a consumer tool and not a professional tool, you'll realize that you should probably give up your loyalty to Cubase.

I used to use Cubasis, and I had constant troubles with protected VST and DirectX plug-ins. The totally free ones worked okay, but the trial period ones would start to crash Cubasis. Other programs which used VST or DirectX plug-ins worked okay. AnalogBox and DDClip Pro worked just fine. I suggest that you keep using WaveLab but stop using Cubase. Maybe try Samplitude or DDClip or SoundSculptor or Tuareg or FruityLoops or MakingWaves or Deck III or something.

I find that it's good to always have a backup plan: Have at least 2 brands of each type of program: multitrack, editor, sequencer, CD-R, jukebox.

Check out DaveCentral.com
Also see links on MacOrchard.com

You should seek the help of a local computer guru in person to fix up your system (defragment, kill viruses, fix disk errors, fix bad addresses, replace corrupted files).

If you have a mac, I can guarantee you that right now you have a corrupted preferences file. Technically, every time your computer crashes you need to run all of the fix-it programs after restarting.

Many times, you actually need an external hard drive or zip disk or CD-ROM to fix a bad system. This is because computers aren't very reliable at fixing themselves. Sooner or later they require outside assistance.

Burn as Mp3

I can´t find out which program I have to download to be able to burn my mp3´s on cd´s in mp3-format, as a backup...I hope someone can help me????

Re: Burn as Mp3

Go to the CD Burning section via the front page of this site. Nero is great but you'll find a heap of free programs to burn those MP3s.

Try CDEX - 130

This is a stable free program - for backups - of wave or Mp3 -

Tracks duplicating each other. W2K Cakewalk, SB.

I am running Win2000 using Cakewalk on a SoundBlaster Audigy Platinum sound card. After recording on one track, the next automatically picks up that track along with the new performance. Tried all input choices for the track. The Platinum is Full-Duplex so shouldn't have this problem... Please Help!!

Zero Latency USB Audio

Do any of you know of any zero latency USB mixers for PCs?

SP-DIF & AES/EBU & TDIF are for Audio, not USB.

They do not exist. USB was intended to be a connection standard for peripheral devices such as keyboards and mice and maybe printers and cheap webcams. It really wasn't designed for high-fidelity audio data transfering.

You maybe need a digital mixer and a digital input on your computer, or perhaps you just need a MIDI controller with faders, or a specialized control surface like the one on digidesign.com

Ok. If you go to digidesign you'll notice some USB stuff popping up for ProTools, but do not be decieved... this is a very new trick which hasn't been proven to be stable. Furthermore, digidesign is one of the best audio companies around. They know a lot more about audio data than any typical computer software company, so you can expect trouble when interfacing with a typical system not optimized for audio.

Help me rescue my music from a bad engineer!

I want to take back my studio work from a bad engineer. It was done on Mac using Pro tools. What PC based software should I use to mix it myself? I'm familiar with Cakewalk but have not touched it since '98. What format does it need to be saved in Pro tools to be used on my PC?

Re: Help me rescue my music from a bad engineer!

It's a shame it's not working out with your tech man. Well, these problems happen quite often. Don't feel bad.

However...

I suggest that you get your engineer to save your tracks onto an ADAT tape (or DA-88 tape) so that you can take them to any PROFESSIONAL recording studio in the world for mixing; you won't even need a computer.

If you really like to do things the hard way though, then do this...

Save data for each song in its own folder. Save each track of each song as a 96kHz 24bit WAVE file. Make sure the file names are as short and simple as possible, hopefully using only 8 letters each. For example:

LOVER_01.WAV, LOVER_02,WAV
or LOVER_L1.WAV, LOVER_R1.WAV.

Also, be sure to keep written notes about any special considerations. That way, if you make a mistake saving, you'll know what to consider by just looking at your written notes.

Probably the original mix was recorded in this format: 48kHz (sampling rate) 24 bits (amplitude resolution). If your engineer is as stupid as you think, it was recorded at 44.1kHz and 16bits. If so, you can go ahead and just save your individual tracks in either of those two formats, but not both. I suggested 96kHz 24bits above, because it is a better quality format which is becoming more and more standard in the better sound programs. Also, if you choose to do any equalisation, the 96/24 format is more precise.

Good luck. Be sure that your recorded tracks are saved onto a CD as a Mac-compatible CD-ROM data disk, NOT as an audio CD. If he doesn't know how to do it, then save your files onto Iomega Zip disks for your Zip drive.

If your engineer has adaptec Toast (also known as Easy CD Creator), then he can save your files onto a CD-ROM for you. Get some extra copies just in case, and don't let him do any more processing of the audio before he saves the tracks.

I sure hope it works out for you. You deserve the best.

mac protools to PC?

well you can run protools on PC now too so maybe try the straight swap first.

Transfer my music files to new computer

I have bought a new computer and have about 1000 MP3 files on my old one. What's the easiest way to transfer them? I have a CD burner on both computers.

Transfer files to new computer

Lap link is a produce with a cable one computer to another - fast and an old stable product saves lot of time. You might have other files you want to move also - graphics that might be time consuming.

burning cd by genre might be useful as backup for your music files also... compare cost - time - backup - to make an informed decision

Re: Transfer my music files to new computer

I'd say the obvious answer is right in front of you. If you know how to network both computers, it might be interesting to just copy from one machine to another. But I'd just burn to CD instead.

Nuendo Tutorials?

Does anyone know where i can find a tutorial for nuendo?

Logic Audio ticks and pops

I have been working as an assistant engineer on a couple of projects and they studio uses Logic Audio. Some of the tracks get a pop or click ever so often and I am having a difficult time narrowing down the root cause. Any advice and/or direction woulkd be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Logic Audio ticks and pops

ooo could be anything. does the sys have more than enough RAM? are audio buffers/latency set just a tad too low?

Re: Logic Audio ticks and pops

What Audio card?

Drivers for Audio cards can often be at fault. Also, check the levels of the recorded audio in Logics audio editor and see if the clicks are a result of overloading of the input signal.

Could be all sorts
