writing music

I am looking for a program that will enable me to write music (basically) for my children who are learning: guitar, trumpet and violin.

Re: writing music

You need to search archives for educational music software then. The intermediate programs will allow composition. Personally, I think you should just try to write for your kids without any programs. It's more personal and direct that way. It also forces everyone to come to grips with [what is the essence of music composition?].
A program is just going to stand in the way.

p.s.- if your kids resent you nagging them to practice now, they will turn sour as lemons if you force them to learn your songs too!

Toddlers and babies are the most musical. They just make noise when they feel like it, how they feel like it at the time. If your kids are still young, don't let them forget or unlearn this. If a tot starts making tons of racket, then encourage it's development. Eventually it will pay off. Just be sure that it's their choice.

Before you read any of this, go to <A HREF="http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html">http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive.html</A> and browse their mac archives. It's not as cool as hitsquad, but if you have access to both, you are ZOD!Most of us dial-up modem people know that our modems seldomly ever work at their rated speeds. The bad news is that if you have a 56K modem, it probably seldomly gets any faster than 33K, and it might even be learning to go at 24K or 28K because some software is making it retarded! It probably hangs up alot, or freezes up you system, or won't go back to normal when you shut down. The good news, is that if you have a 14K, 28K, or 33K modem, it probably is actually a 56K modem in disguise. This is because dialup modems can't go any faster than 33K, NONE of them. It's illegal by federal law for electrical reasons. Actually the difference in "speeds" is actually just a difference in modem language and vocabulary. The better your modem's vocabulary, the faster it can get it's point accross. This means, that if you take the time to about modem codes and take notes on the important ones like "&D0" and "&B2" and "&K3" then you can get your modem working up to what it's capable of. Error correction and data compression are the main speed enhancers. Still, you can read the basic menus and never get past square one. I have found that most communications software packages DONT WORK. This goes for both mac and pc. If you want to learn how to get things to work, you have to get a second and third opinion. In my case, the best info I have found about setting up a modem comes from the documentation files in ZTerm. ZTerm is a very old terminal-emulation program from the days when there was NOT a wwweb. The program is freeware, and can still be used to log onto servers and even browse the web if your server lets you use lynx (a text-only web browser). Anyhow, the ZTerm files explain just enough about modems to help you figure out what the difference is between V.22, V.34, V.42bis, and MNP. It also starts to show how similar a modem is to a telegraph when you really think about it. If you have an old mac and the full version of HyperCard, you can download the Dartmouth XCMD's package from their info-mac archives and use the included SerialHandler XFCN (external function) to tweek your modem to be faster. HyperCard is a scripting language which is easier to learn than HTML, but much more powerful. It basically set the tone for the invention of the wwweb, but it never really took off, because the creators starting fighting over politics and ownership. They also weren't smart enough to add better sound and graphics to it when they first had the chance. To make matters worse, it started out as a free program without bugs, found on every mac, and graduated to become very buggy, crippleware that you have to pay for. Now HyperCard isn't found on hardly any macs, but is still a great tool if you know how to use it. Generic HyperCard can be used to make little musical sequences out of 8bit 22KHz Mac sounds and can probably do a bit better, now that people have made freeware accessories for it (XCMD's and XFCN's: command and functions). There are XCMD's out in freewareland that can do literally anything. HyperCard is like AppleScript, except it's older and has it's own paint program and HTML-page-like buttons and fields and cursors and icons. OK. So what's the big deal with that? Well, there are HyperCard scripts and XFCN's and XCMD's for MIDI, AIFFs, StuffIt!, sounds, pictures, and the like. Any version of HyperCard is capable of telling any other Mac program to open up. It's also kinda keen because you can write your own scripts to do funky things according to timing, mouse and keyboard input, questions, and mathematical computations. I sing the praises of HyperCard today, because I made a quick script to get my modem to run at 56K instead of 28K, and now I can download from this site, a bit faster. I know most of you couldn't care any less, but somebody out there may really need to know that this can be done someday. Lots of good software is golden but olden. I am currently working on a project to use HyperCard to notice when certain folders fill up with audio files so it can then convert them or archive them with other programs. HyperCard can call AppleScript, and AppleScript is on most new Macs, so HyperCard is back en-vogue again. HyperCard works on all systems from the MacSE thru PowerPC's and can deal with up to MacOS 8.1 Maybe it can do better than that. It will be interesting to see. You will be wanting to read this again when you have a MacOS X or higher system that can be UNIX automated but still have some funky old tools around. HyperCard is also of interest if you have a PC with Mac Emulation software on it. MacOS 7 is about the highest most emulators can deal with, and for 68K mac programs. This means that you can use DOS and other Windows scripting systems to automate your PC Windows work, and then automate the rest of the result on the inside of the Mac emulation environment. This would be useful for scripting the running of old mac programs on a PC. You could augment HyperCard within the emulator with XCMD's and XFCN's and get it to do file type conversion of sorts, or communicate to your serial/parallel ports. HyperCard is a lot easier than DOS, so you might like this post if you are really out here to learn how to be geeky and dangerous with oddity softgear.

record to cd recording

Please tell me what program/hardware you used ,what you liked and/or did not like about the results you got, ease of use, speed or any other comments.

Thanks,

Re: record to cd recording *Lp-cassette-and more info

I use CDEX http://www.cdex.n3.net/ to move files from CD/wave to MP3. MP3 conversions, many programs accomplish that feat some better than others. I use “MP3Decode” http://www.etalonsoft.com/ to move files from Mp3 to wave. I use WhiteTiger Standard http://www.dgpdev.com/ to clean up wave recording I have made or captured. All these programs are free. You will discover by visiting the above sites they have upgraded versions with far more functions than the versions I use. However, these programs work for me, as I am a casual user of this technology.

Music, “for me of tin ear” was something I did not pay much attention to until informed about a program called Napster. I had not purchased a CD or a Cassette forever, until this program magically appeared in my computer. I used the radio in the car, a small portable radio in the office, and my alarm clock radio did double duty prior to discovery of Napster.

Using Napster, I discovered there was music I enjoyed, but the recording quality of most downloads was very poor, and lots of them were incomplete, or became incomplete when my connection was lost. In my office of a hundred many obscure singers, and groups were discussed. I made notes and searched for these singer, styles, and song names using Napster. Most of all I discovered styles I had never heard of, or dreamed there would be music recorded with so many diverse styles. Yes, I discovered music with Napster. I was very dissatisfied with the quality of music I downloaded, and became my music store best special order customer.

Then, Napster disappeared on-line. I tried several other services, but the magic was gone. I now find that my purchases have gone down, and others in the office have reduced their purchases. The other P2P services did not have the selection of music, or the software was full of spyware. I began to look at the shelf, of CD’s I had acquired, in a year and a half, and began to move them into my computer learning how to make decent recordings.

That is how I found and began to use these programs, along with the LP Recorder from CFB software I located from http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/win95/AUDIO_RECORDING/

Quality, and better Quality is a function of money spent to accomplish a task, remember I have a tin ear, but wanted better quality than the downloads available on line. To accomplish that task, I purchased many CDs and still scour the used music stores for CDs and LP adding to my collection of music. I spend the time, to rip or record at a quality that my billfold can afford. For the moment, I am happy with the sound quality I have achieved, but know that quality could improve if I acquired better equipment.

Here is a set of messages at PC magazine that discuss this in greater detail - including the quality of the sound card used for capturing.

Audiogalaxy problem for Windows XP

My audiogalaxy satellite doesn't run correctly under win xp...... only download one to one. I change satellite options to download 4 or 5 at same time but it doesn't really matter what I select..... only one to one... and it can be fast... but very very boring.... What can i do??
thx

Re: Audiogalaxy problem for Windows XP

Don't know if you have found a solution for this one already or not, but here it is: Audiogalaxy doesn't run correctly on Windows XP because of the automatic bandwidth limitation function. It doesn't allow Audiogalaxy to download stuff from the web and Audiogalaxy doesn't like that. The solution for this problem is simple: disable the bandwidth limitation thingie and it works fine. Tip: download a tool like XP Antispy and look for the bandwidth option. Can be downloaded for free from http://www.webtechgeek.com/Free-Windows-Utilities.htm#xpantispy.

REASON

Hey there! I have just installed a copy of Reason, which seems to be working fine, apart from the fact that I cant hear anything! All the channels are running, but as I said, I cant here anything. Is there some secret switch hidden deep within Reasons soul preventing me from hearing the fruits of my labour?

Re: REASON

my first guess would be to say that you just don't have the audio output running through your soundcard. check file, preferences, audio, and make sure it's set to your soundcard and not set on no sound.

Playing midi files to synth

I am interested only in playing back midi files to my synthesizer and altering only speed and choosing which clefs on piano. I don't have any need to record, rearrange, compose etc.

Any simple programs like this?

Bringing up playlist for karaoke cd's

I am looking for some software that will allow me to bring up and print the playlist from karaoke cd's. I am also looking for something that will allow me to set up a laptop to use sort of like a jukebox... where you pick the song, click the button and there it is. Can anyone help me?

Re: Bringing up playlist for karaoke cd's

You can use KJ Pro to generate your lists...

See here for a trial.... http://www.djpro.net/

There are many different kinds of SW that will allow you to do a playlist like a jukebox... a quick search of the net will yield many results :)

Help! I can't remember the name of a program!

Anyone out there know the name of a program used to create WAV files that had the following features:

-There were components such as sound effects and the like, and you put these components together like building a circut board. Every component was a icon. Put the icons on the workspace and connected them with lines. Then you hit the "Calculate" button and it made the sound and you could save it as a wav file. You built sounds this way with the various sound components.

What was the same of the program??? AHHH!! I need to know!

please, IF YOU KNOW, e-mail me at redcalx@hotmail.com

Thank you soooo much!

Re: Help! I can't remember the name of a program!

sounds to me like it's Tassman studio to me.

soundcards

What sort of sound card would I need to be able to input four or more audio signals simultaniously to a program which will handel them independently ?

Re: soundcards

: What sort of sound card would I need to be able to input four or more audio signals simultaniously to a program which will handel them independently ?

You could get two SBLive!s at about $80 each that is not so bad. They spec out pretty nice too at 0.05% harmonic distortion and about 90 dB signal to noise.

Will take a look.

Re: soundcards

Thanks Gecko. Will see what I can find.

Re: soundcards

There are a few.. If you are going PCI, the M-Audio Delta66 is a hard to beat card at the moment. It is an Audio card rather than a Sound card so it makes no sounds at all. It's purely a 24bit audio input device..

components for beginers

Hello everyone
I am a trained acoustic (classically trained) musician and would like to try my hand at some electronic composing and recording. Since I have never done anything along these lines before; Is there anyone who can advise me on what should be the basic setup and best programs needed to compose and create. I have an 800 mhz iMac w/ 1G of ram and am fluent in many acoustic instruments (keyboard, wind and string) but know very little about electronic instrumentation.
Sincerely,
benno f miller

Re: components for beginers

I would recommend getting a software studio like Propellerheads Reason. You'll get some synthesizers to make your own sounds, a sampler to arrange pieces, a mixer to edit the song, and effects as well... Basically everything I think you'd need to get started at a decent price without getting too confusing. You can also buy sound kits such as winds, strings, etc by propellerhead to build yourself a digital orchestra. It's difficult to make the switch into the digital music world, but once you do, it's amazing what you can make.
