I have several beautiful home recordings on cassette tape that I would like to burn on a CD. What equipment and/or software (suitable for a novice)would I need to accomplish this? I would appreciate your help.

Nana,

I answered this same inquiry in the previous messages:

Sound Card

Hi everyone. I play guitar and I'm looking for a good sound card to record music on my pc. Does anyone have any recommendations? Also some software recommendations would be great too.
Thanks in advance.

Open ended question...

What type of music do you wish to record though?? Acoustic, Electronic...??

Sounds cards and Audio cards are different as the Soundcard will have audio inputs that are usually average to say the least, as well as synth sounds for games etc...

Audiocard are purely for the purpose of getting audio in and out of the computer and are almost always much better quality..

Check out offerings from M-Audio.. They can do little wrong with me..

SteveR

Re: Open ended question...

Eventually both... both more so along the lines of acoustic. I have a cheap integrated one already... I can use this for games. I'm looking I think more for an audio card. I will check out M-audio... thanks for the tip.

Will your Music software and computer make you a criminal?

If you enjoy making or listening to Music & Movies then you need to be concerned. Please get your neighbor and friend involved also. How and what you make (Digital Music Movies), distribute, and enjoy media are being discussed, in Washington DC.

Imagine a world where all digital media technology is either mandatory or forbidden -- Senator Fritz Hollings with the Music & Movie industry has introduced new legislation to kill more American consumer rights.

April 22, 2002, Senator Hollings introduced the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA.), This legislation would give "The Movie & Music industry the power to stall new digital media technologies and take away more consumer rights in America. His legislation will effect all Movie & Music devices and decide which innovative features are forbidden in America.

The Senate has called for comments on the future of digital media distribution, an issue that is entwined with technology mandates.

What YOU Can Do Now:
This is YOUR chance to voice your opposition to laws that make all digital media technology mandatory or forbidden.
 Fax a letter to the Senate. Senate staffers will ignore anything they believe to be a form letter.
The Senate Judiciary Committee's Chairman Patrick Leahy and Ranking Republican Member Orrin Hatch are accepting comments via fax at +1 202-224-9516
 For information on how to contact your legislators and other government officials, see EFF's "Contacting Congress and Other Policymakers" guide at:
http://www.eff.org/congress.html
 See related alert on House request for comments on digital music:

In late February, at a congressional hearing, Senator Fritz Hollings http://www.senate.gov/~hollings/ (D-S.C.) chastised technology companies for not coming up with solutions to curb digital piracy. He also said that he planned to draft a bill intended as a solution.

Now, Hollings has introduced anti-consumer legislation, the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA.) If you produce and distribute your own media, this concerns you. If you archive your purchased media, this concerns you. If you do not want your computer and components legislated then please get involved.

Here's something I wrote a while back...

The revolution will be digitized.

And watermarked, encrypted and only accessible to you via a biometric reader.

All revolutions will be branded and sanitized by our marketing team.

Have no fear, your revolution will be non-threatening and will come with a
warning sticker for your parents.

>From time to time the revolution will let us know how many times you have
experienced it. It is in both of our interests. We want to bring you
greater revolutions with surround sound, smellavision and 3-D animation.
You have no choice.

Do not distribute or duplicate the revolution without permission.

Do not alter the revolution without permission.

And no, you cannot back-up the revolution onto a portable device.

You can only experience the revolution the way we want you to.

Purchase the revolution on DVD if you want, but you can only experience it
in zones 1,2 and 4. It is our corporate policy. The rest will have to wait.

We ultimately own the revolution and will do what we want with it. You
cannot.

You can purchase the revolution online for only $19.95.

The revolution has never been so exciting. Buy now and pay later...

Re: Will your Music software and computer make you a criminal?

When the Digital Millennium Copyright Act went
through we were all told that this was to protect
innocent parties from being held responsible for
copyright violations (eg search engines linking
to violating content) and to enable copy
protection systems to protect copyright owners
like musicians.

It was only later that most people realized that
the effect of the law was to remove the previously
existing right to make personal copies of music,
because making a personal copy of a CD or song
file (that you legally own) with a copy protection
system constitutes circumventing a copy protection
mechanism and you can go to jail for that.

I strongly urge everyone to find out as much as
you can about new laws - we don't want to all be
caught out again like we were last time!

Jason.

Reasons to be cheerful, part 3...

The government sticking up for the mafia again.. Sheesh...

I don't believe there is much they can actually do. Look at the amount of people that 'haven't' listened to the music giants lawyers so far... Apparently, last year, the music industries accountants claimed a 10% loss of revenue... Diddums... The true figure was 5%... lier's through and through.. No surprised there then.

One thing I have learnt over time. If a governmental figure tells you something, it's more than likely a lie. If a music industry figure tells you something, it is a lie..

Cynical? You betcha..

Re: Reasons to be cheerful, part 3...

Still, I would hate for this site to eventually become illegal.
It could happen if certain people get their way.
Worse yet, government-remote-controllable software could come around.
It would be like pay-per-view TV, but for software use.

Hi dbpms (enjoy your posts btw)

I'm curious as to why you think site could become
illegal - are you refering to downloading, discussions,
or something else, and what sort of laws are you
thinking of?

Cheers,
Jason.

Re: Will your Music software and computer make you a criminal?

For quite some time now, I've regarded the Internet and computers as having a massive potential for societal control and eroding privacy rights. This comes as no shock to me.

Start archiving your PC/Mac programs NOW!

This also shows why hackers and crackers and phreakers are always on your side.

Hackers don't create and use malicious computer viruses, corporations and governments do.

Re: Will your Music software and computer make you a criminal?

I totally agree with this noble person. This is very important. This bad lawmaking sets the tone for the establishment of locks on creative tools which WE can't open. It has been scientifically and politically proven that data cannot be digitally 100% copy protected, but that copy protection merely makes life more difficult and less diverse for innocent consumers. DVD copy protection took years to develop and only hours to hack.

This is part of a continual cycle. It has it's ups and downs, but it is only the hackers who participate in the cycle for everyone's sake. Corporations and governments get involved only so that they can invade your privacy and get your money. Media protection schemes don't prevent terrorism, either.

<IMG SRC="http://www.vfs.com/~fipa/banner.jpg">

If you want to retain the right to view and create digital art, then you need to oppose this legislation. Technology has made information more democratically available at the expense of capitalism. Allowing fascists to rule neither solves the copyright infringement isssues nor improves our involvement to digital arts and media. If fact, this legislation is just more censorship and fascism with a capitalist spin. They want to make money off our right to information.

If this doesn't make you angry, then you are a fool.

Re: Will your Music software and computer make you a criminal?

You need these for happy computing:

ability to create files of any type
ability to delete any and all files permanently
ability to rename or move any files
ability to control external device settings
ability to add or remove devices or components
ability to add or remove software or hardware
ability to study or improve software or hardware

Guess what? You can't do this in any current operating system without system utilities and a wee bit of cracking-related tools. I don't mean tools to hack into a site, but tool which let you do things that the operating system won't let you do.

Examples:

Hex Editor
Process Monitor/Interrupter
File Type Changer
Archive Viewer/Editor
Disk/File Compression
File Attribute Editor
Folder Attribute Editor
Hidden File Viewer
Privacy Tools
Encryption Tools
Memory Optimization Tools
System Optimization Tools
PRAM Editor/Zapper Tools

The best ways to find these tools online is
to search for system utilities and to browse
cracker and hacker sites.

While I do not advocate cracking audio programs, I do advocate knowing how or at least why it is done. Furthermore, these same tools make making music easier by giving you full control over your system.

Hackers and freelance programmers are also the ones who help develop systems which are more stable and fun to use.

Meanwhile, huge conglomerate corporations and telecommunications companies and governments just want to control you.

I do not hack, and I don't think that most people should. However, I think that those who DO hack, ultimately help all other computer users by pushing the envelope forward, as long as no one gets hurt... this is a generalization, but you would be wise to start studying these issues as the internet becomes increasingly more political and less free and creative.

Make music while you can. Someday music software may be called an illegal form of encryption or copyright hacking tools.

And last but not least, make your OWN music. Ripping off other artist's styles hurts us all, and makes your music suck harder.

Software

I have been trying to find something that would convert music to cords. This seems to be difficult. Is there any software out there that does this?
Thanks.

Re: Software

Nope. The analysis of music is extremely complicated, and even the most advanced software (I'm talking university research stuff) can only cope with relatively simple stuff, and even then they can only achieve 80% accuracy. If your brain can't do it, what hope has a PC got?

Re: convert .DAT file to MP3 format

When you downloaded the music it is likely that the download was not complete. For example, on KaZaA the download will appear as a DAT file until the download has been completed in full. The file begins as a DAT file as it contains functions that allows downloads to resume if a connection fails or anything else does wrong. When the download is complete the DAT file should convert to an MP3 file automatically. If this dont happen remove the P2P program you are using and reinstall. Good Luck. John.
