1. Where do I find the Windows XP drivers for my Piano Disccovery and Cubasis A/V software.
2.Which budget software weould you recommend for
a)learning the piano
b)running a home studio set up

Mike Rosen

Re: Piano Discovery

Mike,

Do you have any ideas that would help us in installation of our Piano Discovery program? When we install it, everything works fine except that the music notes are black rectangles. It seems like a font problem, but we don't know what to do. Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Has anyone figured this out? I can get the progam to work , but I do not get sound from the keyboard. I am hooking a Roland electronic piano to a laptop running XP. I hooked up a USB to midi cord , but I do not obtain the sounds of the notes. I do get the sound from the voices in the program- Any Ideas?

HI,
I SAW YOUR QUESTION ABOUT JUMP PIANO ON THE WEB --DID YOU EVER GET INFORMATION ON IT--MINE WORKS BUT I CAN'T GET ANY SOUND OUT OF THE KEYBOARD--I THINK THAT IT NEED A DRIVER TO WORK---KNOW WHERE I MIGHT GET ONE?

Re: Piano Discovery

I have the same problem. Any ideas?

$ 1500 = minimal home studio that can compete with pro market.

I am a bit unconventional, but I learned from some very professional people. And I read a bit. Still, my answers could be totally unappealing.

The nice thing about an actual piano, is that they are rather cheap when bought used. A used piano can run from about 50 dollars to 600 dollars. Many sell for about 250 dollars used, in a functional condition. This is much cheaper than buying a used synthesizer. It doesn't cost that much to hire a piano tuner, either. If you are lucky, you might even run across ads for pianos which are free if you agree to move it.

As far as home studios go, be prepared to start spending upwards from about 1500 dollars for anything that features the current high standards for audio. This is generally true regardless of the type of home studio setup. You can beat around the bush at about 600 dollars, but once you start expanding into pro features, you'll quickly end up at about 1500 dollars. This is true even if you buy separate pieces at a time or just buy one dedicated integrated system. This trend has not changed over the last 10 years, because the pro audio standards keep changing.

If you want to be running a pro setup, you'll need to consider these esoteric things:

* Power line conditioner (at best, reduces noise 16 dB) = very important for true 24bit recording or better)
* 32 bit recording and playback. = reduced digital processing waveform errors (quantization). Especially important for digital equalisation and effects clarity.
* 96kHz or higher sampling rate. 192kHz is the highest current sampling rate for DTS DVD's. This is also the sampling rate used to produce many HDCD's (before downsampling). Considering how quickly 24/96k has become standard, I would brace for 192k/32bits right away. Higher sampling rates are also needed for artifact-free digital EQ. Akai just released some 96kHz samplers this year.
* Studio monitors (flat, matched pair). Speakers that don't muck up the actual sound.
Technically you could do without these and rely upon standard consumer speakers, but this makes EQ a bit more tricky and less reliable.
* Outboard compression and impedance matching devices. If you can enhance or preserve an audio signal before it gets converted to digital, you will have less trouble getting good sound. Dynamics compression is a big aspect of this. Noise affects dynamics as well, even if the noise is inaudible. This is an area where Neve consoles and Focusrite (Neve) products tend to excell. Another reputable manufacturer is DBX.
many folks talk about multiband compression like it's chocolate candy, but many Neve consoles have had built-in parametric EQ/multi-channel (multiband) compression for years. Since these consoles are already created for extremely low noise and extremely high sampling rates, these consoles always win first choice in the long haul. Since none of us mere humans can afford these, we must rely upon similar technologies in other forms, or just by the channel units.

* Analog Parametric EQ. As stated above. Settle for digital Parametric EQ if you must, but be warned that it is a relatively new thing that varies from implementation to implementation.

* XLR inputs. These simple inputs are expensive, but inherently reduce noise and are the signature of professional equipment. XLR inputs are always a good sign on recording gear. A device that has only XLR inputs and/or outputs is probably a more trustworthy device.

I have done the math bearing these things in mind and accommodating possible strategic sacrifices. I can assure you that the magic number hovers around 1500 dollars. This hasn't changed since the Ensoniq ASR-10 Sampling Workstation was released years ago. That was the dawning of the current age of hard disk recorders and samplers. It's also the rough price of the MPC-2000. Nowadays you could get something like that used for about 600 dollars, but then again you are back to 44.1kHz at 16bits.

Even if you go the computer route, it will still cost you about 1500 for all the software and soundcard and cables and hardware devices. If you want to record more than 2 tracks at a time, you'll already need a 400 dollar soundcard. If you need a good soundcard, you're up higher.

Even if you get a Roland/Boss/Marshall (same company) hard disk recording studio, it will cost you upwards from 600 dollars still in the 44.1k quality range.

Personally, I suggest doing strategic research upon what you would most like to be doing and how you need to do it at minimum. People like you and me can't exactly afford to be buying whole studios. Then again, maybe YOU can!

Good luck, my friend.

Napster is pretty much KAPUT these days. I haven't used Napigator for ages. But ARRRR those were the days, matey. Try <a href="http://www.mp3machine.com/software/Napimx/">Napimx 2.10</a> - Adds servers from Napigator to Winmx. There are also a load of MP3 finding programs <a href="http://www.mp3machine.com/win/SEARCHING/">over here</a>.

Looking for Karaoke Midi player

Hi, I want to host karaokes using MIDI song files. I want a software package that projects the words on a TV screen like CD-G karaoke song files. What software program or hardware will do that?

Re: Looking for Karaoke Midi player

: Lawrence, We recomend

http://gasman.future.easyspace.com/

good player/ editor and over 500 songs downloaded as one superfile, you can also use mp3s, but you will have to sync the lyrics yourself. You will have to pay about £19 to register your copy to use beyond the 10 trial times.
Many Happy Hours of singing.......

Re: Looking for Karaoke Midi player

You could use VanBasco's Karaoke Player, just double click on the Karaoke window and you get full screen lyrics, doing so again returns to normal, I think it should help,

: Hello,

Unfortunately it can't be done legally and no-one
can help you do it. This is one of the effects of
the Digital Millennium Copyright Act - no one may
circumvent, or help someone else to circumvent, a

just can't seem to download properly

Each time I click to Download something, my pc brings up these messages saying it could not find the relevant files etc., and then proceeds to open up a blank excel workbook,
Please could somebody shed some light on this for me and let me know how to go about downloading some music software successfully. Cheers Mark.

Re: just can't seem to download properly

: Each time I click to Download it downloads straight away and doesn't ask to "save the file" or "open the the file" to a folder... can some-body please tell me how i can fix it

Have you tried a right click, "save as"

Mark, it appears you have your file associations all mixed up - is this your only file association that is wrong - with your operating system?

I am assuming you have run, scan disk with fix files box checked, and defraged to see if this in not just a windows temporary memory glitch...

This is a Music forum, this type of technical question would be better served on a technical fourm rather than a music site.

With that reminder try these two links and one more – which may help

Link one: http://twcny.rr.com/technofile/texts/bit121398.html
Link two: http://twcny.rr.com/technofile/texts/bit122098.html

Link #3: http://twcny.rr.com/technofile/texts/giz111401.html

If the three links above do not help then I would suggest sending Dr. Gizmo an e-mail. be certain you provide him a description step by step of what happens, maybe even provide him with a screen capture – if he needs a more complete explanation.

The name of the group is the "Alkaholiks" & the rapper's name is "J-Ro". It's from their debut album which I think is called "The Liks"

good luck
