Can two computers speak MIDI through serial or USB?

Is there a way to make two computers speak MIDI to each other without a
proper MIDI interface (sound card for PC, external box for Mac, etc.)? I'm
thinking of a driver that'd use a regular serial or USB port to communicate
instead.

I'm trying to set up 15 pairs of computers to send MIDI commands to each
other, and I hope I don't need to buy additional hardware for all 30....

Thanks,
Nick

You ought to be able to use Midi-Ox [Midi-Yoke] software to handle the
routing to any midi device i/o in Windows. It used to be located at
http://www.channel1.com/users/jamieo , but nothing's there now. I don't
have a clue where it went.

It's a separate question of getting serial drivers to work. I'm sure
you can find some at the Roland site.

Are they part of a LAN network? There used to be a piece of software around
that let you send MIDI information over a network (never tried it though...)

XG Edit Real Time Effect Adjustment

Right, I've just finished my Uni degree so I can now forget about
studying and finally concentrate on making music. I've got:
- Sonar XL
- SW1000WG
- XGEdit (Obviously)
- Midi Yoke (Cos I'm using XP)
- Reason (Can't use it with Sonar 1 but just to mention in passing)

My question is this: In reason you can control any settings on any
synth in real time using the controller lanes on a track. Is it
possible to control all the settings of every voice of the SW1000XG
(I.e. the voices allocated to channels 1-16) in real time using Sonar
to control XG Edit?

I know this sounds like a stupid question and I have a strong belief
the question is yes since the SW1000XG is supposed to be very good and
XG Edit is supposed to be an absolute must for when you edit SW1000XG
banks.

So I suppose my question is how???????? Do I need to read up on
sysex? Or just Midi? Or just something else completely?

For example,
On channel 1: I have a synth part of which I want to change the
resonance and cutoff values during the first five bars of the song
while applying an auto-wah effect to it.
On Channel 2: I have say a string part which has a large hall reverb
on it and I want to increase the reverb value and change the large
hall to canyon. Again during the first 5 bars of the song.

How do I do this using Sonar? (Or how would I do it in general?)
Everything I have read on XGEdit says its incredibly simple to use but
I just can't work it out and I don't know what documentation I need to
read to learn about it. Is it Sonar Documentation? SW1000XG
Documentation? XG Edit Documentation? Midi/Sysex Documentation? What?
If anyone can shed any light on how I can use my equipment properly I
would be very, very grateful.

Cheers,

Chubby

You cannot control XGEdit, that is you cannot send data to it. You use
XGedit to setup your synth and insert the data into your song in the form
of sysex and controllers.

Its a must only if you use a sequencer that is not made specifically for
the XG format.

You need to read the documentation relevent to XGEdit. XGEdit like all XG
Editors like Wizzard, Gold and the XGWorks program work as an interface
between you and the intricacies of the XG format. To try and understand all
the parameters available for editing in the SW1000XG is a tad mindboggling.
So learn how XGedit works and how to use it by reading and experimentation.
Another spot for help is to join the SW1000XG mailing list at
http://www.sw1000xg.com

For this example you would need to setup the Auto Wah effect in XGedit,
this as an insertion effect.
The cutoff and resonance you would need to draw/input yourself using
Controllers 71&74 in Controller lanes.
The CH 2 stuff is more complex as you will be asking XGedit to do stuff it
is not specifically made to do. The start is easy ... You want to start off
the piece using the Large Hall reverb and increase the amount of reverb by
adjusting Controller 91. The change to Canyon is the (very small) problem.
This is easy to do as you only need to insert a sesyx string at the point
in the song where you want the reverb to change. However, XGEdit is used
primarily to setup the synth and not as a real time input device although
it can be done. The best program to allow the insertion of parameter
changes anywhere is XGWorks, (although it is no longer produced... Yamaha
have another sequencer in the offing it seems). I digress ... you will need
some knowledge of sysex for this unless you save .syx data from XGedit and
use that, inserted into your piece as the reverb change. Messy! The other
option is to use Studioware in Sonar. As a non Sonar user I can't talk
about this with any confidence at all.

The amount of editable parameters available on the SW1000XG is incredible.
To learn how to use it effectively takes time. You need to learn how to use
your software ... Sonar and XGedit ... and experiment like crazy. Join the

Think of XGEdit as a control device with physical knobs. It doesn't
have a way to respond to inputs (it just passes them through), but you
can use its "knobs" to control the synth. You can indeed control
everything on the SW1000XG (or other XG synths).

Reading the help files for the XG stuff is a big thing. Yamaha also
has some supporting docs on how to use the SW1000XG with various
sequencers. There are a lot of options for what you can do.

:: For example,
:: On channel 1: I have a synth part of which I want to change the
:: resonance and cutoff values during the first five bars of the song

Sonar and Cakewalk also have SW1000XG editing environments, so you
can play with mouse controls while recording these particular
elements.

There is also option B: realtime recording of sysex. You'll need to
enable recording of sysex in Sonar (it defaults to off), then as you
play your song, make the adjustments in XGEdit. For realtime
recording, you'll want to have it set to GM (controllers rather than
sysex where possible) mode, otherwise you end up with tons of sysex
messages recorded.

Note: only single value sysex changes can easily be put into a
playing track. More complex changes take time to execute, which
interrupts the sound :-( XGEdit's help file is pretty good for which
sorts work where, but you'll know it if you change some parameters and
get a drop-out in sound on the track.

If you can do it in between playing notes, that is easy. If you
have a bit of silence in your song, you can even do complete parameter
changes on every track during a song.

On other options: If you want to morph one effect into another, you
can just use two effects, if you don't need them for other things. An
insertion reverb plus the original main reverb, then adjust the levels
via controllers on both. That won't get the parameter-changing effect,
however.

Still, you can easily try out the sysex parameter-changing method in
XGEdit. Play your CH2 bit, adjust the XGEdit reverb parameters as it
plays. If you can hear it, you can record it (sysex recording on, of
course).

Re: XG Edit Real Time Effect Adjustment

Thanks for the help, both messages were really useful. So I guess I
need to learn about Midi and Sysex in general if I want to do some
interesting parameter adjustments mid song. Just to confirm some of
the absolute basics:

1) My (virtual) setup should be:

Midi Keyboard -> XGEdit -> Sonar -> Speakers

2) I then use XGEdit to select a voice and use it to alter the voice
to get a sound I'm happy with. Perhaps use it to record some
alterations I make in realtime if possible.

3) Use Sonar to control some XG features by drawing controller lanes
in a midi track (or also by adding sysex?).

4) Then practise like crazy till I understand what I'm doing.

Is the above correct?

The type of music I'm concentrating on is heavily synth based music
like Depeche Mode (or FisherSpooner) and so the sort of effects I'll
be trying to achieve are builds using filters. Am I best using plugin
effects in Sonar or should I concentrate on doing everything via
Midi/XG and my SW1000XG? It seems that I've bought this really good
soundcard but haven't even scratched the surface of its capabilities?

Cheers,

Chubby

: You can't directly apply software audio effects to the hardware
:synth. You can record the synth's tracks as audio, and then apply
:software effects after, and that works OK.

But, do not forget, that any XG effects and parameters (rever, chorus,EQ,
filters, inserts, returns, routes, etc.- both master&part, exclude
note-specific - like portamento) can be applied to Audio inputs (in
realtime, of course) and they often better than CakeWalk bundled FX

I'm stuck

I know this has been addressed in the past but I need some help.
I'm using Cubase, an audiophile 2496, 800mhz, and a DR-770
drummachine. I keep getting echo or latency of about 1.5 seconds
or something. Went into system and raising some values that were
supposed to give it more of a buffer but to no avail.
What settings do you guys use or do any of you use Cubase?
Thanks in advance,
Sebastian

Re: I'm stuck

See if the latency topic on my CubaseFAQ page helps.
Maybe you're not using the ASIO drivers for your Audiophile?
The only settings that will directly affect latency in Cubase's audio
system page are the ones behind ASIO Control Panel.

Re: I'm stuck

Your clue helped me out alot!
I had the monitor mixer selected in the control panel and not the wav out
1/2 and now
I have no latency or at least none that i can hear. Cubase says 25
milliseconds which I can handle.

Thanks again!

Introduced noise between Computer-based tracker and cd burner

i am on a mission to cut the noise from the recordings in my computer. I have noticed that when im playing a tune on modtracker, the quality is great, but once i convert to wav (1) and then burn to cd(2), the sound quality (sounds quite noisy, perhaps lesser stereo quality also) drops a lot when played on my dodgy cd walkman. Perhaps its partly the walkman's fault, but do you know if 1 & 2 cause a drop in quality. I guess its the good old fans fault once again. I think some people switch the fan off for up to 10 mins while recording / burning. How does the fan introduce noise during 1 & 2? It seems more logical that that noise would be picked up by the soundcard at any time and be present in equal quantites even when just playing from modtracker. Any ideas folks?

Machines are imperfect.

fan = external vibrations.
external vibrations = CD-R laser errors.

I read in a CD-R FAQ somewhere that it is
a fact of digital audio that CD-R discs are
always about 1-2 decibels quieter on playback than the
originals they copy. This is less of an issue for
commercially printed CD's (which aren't burnt).

Most quantization error noise is due to computational
errors and rounding. Another issue of errors in numbers
are processor-dependent rounding errors. A few years ago
Intel released some processors that were proven to be
faulty for any higher-precision math calculations. Well,
audio rendering requires high-precision math calculations.
Any errors from the programmer or the program or the CPU
will be bad.

Another source of errors is if the CD-R uses a RAM buffer.
Some RAM buffering occurs in the computer, other RAM buffering
is in the CD-R drive itself. Well, RAM is just electricity,
so if there is any electrical intereference, then the RAM can
get corrupted a little without anybody ever knowing.

Last but not least, many MOD players add their own
special EQ or effects to the music. This means that
they enhance the audio in RAM before you hear it. A
possible solution to this would be to record the MOD
playback via analog inputs to your soundcard. You would
gain a little bit of analog noise, but perhaps you could
control it better, or even do some external processing
with a compressor or spatializer or something.

Re: Introduced noise between Computer-based tracker and cd burne

I don't think it's likely that's the problem. All PC's are designed with very stringent emission regulations, so unless you've some really cheap stuff in there, it's probably something else.

What settings are you using when you convert to WAV? Are you using 44kHz, 16-bit stereo? If you use lower settings, the quality will deteriorate.

Andy

Re: Introduced noise between Computer-based tracker and cd burne

Ive got a new eMachines PC 1GHz with Audigy soundcard. I am recording as you say 44kHz, 16-bit stereo. Do you think it would be worth trying another converter from .it to .wav since I am currently simply using the the 'Save as Wav' option in the File menu of Modtracker. Do you know of any such converter? Or perhaps trying to port the file to cubase (lite version which came with soundcard) and convert it there?

I second this one. Come on guys - get your act together. Many of us love this program and have not been able to better it. If you cannot offer adequate support and so on then, pass back to Australia to someone who can! It is so frustrating having to try and learn another program that is not user friendly or try to find the cash to purchase a much more expensive, more user friendly version. Please guys, get it together.

I third this. ENCORE is far superior to the other programs I have tried, SIBELIUS and FINALE. I trashed my old WIN 98 computer and purchased this Windows XP job. triton

how to play triton .sng files on the pc .what is the software to be used. where can i get it.

Vocals

I am trying to remove everything from a track except the vocals, I am using Sound forge and I go to Process -> Channel Converter and use the vocal cut.
All i get is choppy filtered sounding noises and the vocals aren't clear at all. Can someone help me out so I get clean vocals or direct me to a program.

Thanks!

Re: Vocals

There is nothing around that will do what you want. As you've already found out, some programs claim to be able to remove the music leaving the vocals or vice-versa, but all of them are pretty poor. Music is simplt too complex.

Tutorial: Cassette to MP3/WAV

A lot of people seem stumped when it comes to converting tape recordings to the MP3 format. 'What software should I use?' and 'how do I connect my cassette player to the PC?' are two of the most common questions we receive. <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/1316/">READ ON...</A>

ANY SOFTWARE? To CHOPPED UP MP3 SONGS ?

Is THere any software to chopped up songs and then loop
like producers such as ROCAFELLA KANYE WEST does on JAY-z BLUEPRINT ?

Re: ANY SOFTWARE? To CHOPPED UP MP3 SONGS ?

yes, Cooledit will do it, just open the mp3 in Cooledit, it automatically converts it to wav, then highlight sections you want to chop out and goto 'Save selection'. Then use a shareware sequencer like modtracker to loop etc.

cheers

Best Software to download to run on Windows XP

Please help. I have Panasonic CW-7585-B CD-RW drive. I currently run windows XP. What is the best software I can either download from this site or purchase from store to burn CD and work with Windows XP. Also is Nero5 burning Rom good??
Thank You for your help in advance.

Re: Best Software to download to run on Windows XP

Yes Nero is very good. The following run on XP:

BurnDrive, CDMASTER (good too), CD Recording Studio, X2CD Music Burner, BPS Audio CD Rip N' Burn, Audio2x CD Workshop. All on this site. You might have to check their individual hardware support lists to see if your Panasonic is compatible but if it is fairly common writer then you should have no probs.

Software for automatic Melody Creation ?

Hello Fellas,

I want to automate the process of creating melody
within a software (?), so that i can put in some
preset conditions or parameters and the software
will produce a new melody line within my presets
in a random fashion each time i hit the "Build Melody"
button.

Is anyone of the big names software like Logic Audio,
Cubase, Sonar, BIAB capable of doing this ?

Or maybe some other less known gem can accomplish such a task ?

Thanks in advance for any kind help!

Check out on this site:

Tangent, MGP Music Generator Program, Mostly Tonal or for MAC, Melody Pilot.

Linux for Serious Music Making? (long)

Hi,
I am usually quite happy with my machine running Win 98SE and music
software alright. However, recently my machine has started locking up more
and more often, a familiar situation to me. It seems the longer I use my
computer, the more software I install (games are especially bad), the more
it starts crashing and finally (maybe once or twice a year) I have to take
some backups, format and reinstall everything.

Well, as I mentioned it is soon time to reinstall and first I considered
reinstalling Windows and just the music software I need, nothing more, to
gain extra stability. HOwever, it occoured to me that perhaps I could try
customized Linux for music making and some free music software instead. I
have a number of questions concerning LInux and music making among other
things. I hope here are some Linux-people able to answer at least some of
them.

Hardware

I have a number of hardware devices which a Linux system should be able to
support. Here are some of them, do you know if there are drivers for Linux
for these:
*USB MIDi Sport 4x4
*TerraTec EWS88 MT (ASIO or similar drivers and preferably some mixer
software)
*ultra ATA 133 MHz EIDE Hard Disc
*Parallel SmartMedia Reader / Writer
*GeForce 2 for graphics (I don't need any fancy 3D features)
*(possibly) an Iomega Zip drive and a network card for sharing an ADSL
connection)

Does Linux support ASIO? ARe there any other similar audio systems in Linux
if it doesn't?

Software

In a Linux system I would also need some music software, that's why I
considered LInux in the first place anyway, as a stabile OS for music
making. Here are what kind of software I'd like to install if it exists for
Linux (I hope it's free, too):

A MIDI Sequencer

This is the primary tool I work with so it should be a good one (something
similar to the MIDi functionality offered by Cakewalk). Are there many MIDI
sequencers for Linux? Are there any, er, good ones able to, for instance:
show RPNs and NRPNs directly, support some kind of instrument definitions
(Cakewalk compatible for instance) and do some advanced MIDI processing too
(something similar to interpolation and CAL scripts in Cakewalk)? Oh, and I
forgot one thing, the sequencer should have quantise and groove quantise
commands, as well. And I utterly forgot MIDI clock sync, that's one very
important feature.

A Multitrack Software

Another very important piece of software, are there any out for Linux? I
would need at least 8 stereo tracks and the ability to use some kind of
realtime effects (EQ, compressor, chorus, distortion, delay, these at
least). Does any audio software support VST compatible plug-ins? Howabout
directX plug-ins a Linux system certainly cannot have support for them, can
it?

A sound Edittor:

I am looking for something with realtime previews if possible and a nice
interrface, too. No special requirements in this department except to have
support for some kind of plug-ins.

A Sysex Dumper

Surely someone has written one for Linux, too. I don't need any extra
features, something as simple as Dumpster for Windows will do just fine.

A Batch Conversion Utility

Well, this is actually optional but would be nice to have one for Linux if
I decide to do all the music stuff in LInux. Something able to resample and
convert from one format to another at least. Normalization and other
processing would be nice, too.

A Software Synth

I don't really need a software synth as I have many hardware boxes but I
would like to try out those ported to Linux. Is CSound ported to Linux? And
I have heard there's a Juno emulation for Linux, has anyone tried that out?
Is it any good?

Networking Software

I thought that maybe I should connect my machine to be a part of a peer to
peer LAn for sharing an ADSL connection. If I do it, I would also need a
web browser and an e-mail program / news reader.

Accessibility Software

Well there's some other software I need in order to be able to use the GUI
and other software, as I am visually impaird. In Windows I use the
Microsoft Magnifier to navigate the UI and programs, so my question is, Has
someone written a simple magnification Window similar to Microsoft
Magnifier for a graphical Linux UI? A simple magnifier would be the
absolute minimum for using any Linux software at all. In addition, it would
be nice to have a software speech synth, a screen reader or a program that
can read text from the clipboard or from a txt file.

Additional Questions

I am new to Linux, although I know Windows well (except networking) and Dos
too (except memory management, I have never fully understood it, but i
guess not manyone has). I would really like to have a graphical
user-interface as music software tends to be graphical. What graphical
shell should I choose and what Linux distribution should I install?
Probably two questions hard to answer briefly. Ideally, I would like to
have something similar to Windows, BeOS or MacOS (I have used Macs and BeOS
a bit). THe more it resembles Windows the better, as it's easier to learn.

In addition, I would like to know if there are LInux guides on the web. A
guide for Linux musicians would be ideal but something telling me about the
GUI in comparison to that of Windows and something teaching how to use the
console view if you know Dos would be very valuable.

How difficult is it to customize and tweak a Linux system without prior
knowledge of the OS? And do I really gain any benefits to a Windows system,
will the Linux counterpart be faster and more reliable? And what if I can't
find a MIDI sequencer I like and the audio card won't work, then I would
have to install Windows anyway. And It will certainly take a lot of time
to get things working in Linux. So should I stick to the OS and software I
know rather than exploring something completely new in hope of good free
software and extra stability?
